Early menarche linked to gestational diabetes mellitus
Among 27,000 women in the Nurses' Health Study II, those whose first period came at 11 or younger were 34 percent more likely to develop gestational diabetes than those starting at 14 or older. The extra risk was largely mediated by pre-pregnancy body fat.
Drug
Estrogen plus progestin hormone therapy raise lung cancer risk
After 14 years of Women's Health Initiative follow-up, women given estrogen plus progestin were 9% more likely to die of lung cancer than those on placebo, a difference the researchers called not statistically significant. The earlier eight-year figure had been 71%.

The Science Behind a Happy and Healthy Heart
Benita Lee of LabDoor lists five ways to look after your heart, beginning with diet and exercise. She cites a study of over 12,000 people in which the heaviest processed-food eaters were 37% more likely to become depressed, and the AHA's 150-minutes-a-week guideline.

Radiation therapy for prostate cancer can cause rectal cancer
A study compared irradiated and non-irradiated sites and found directly irradiated rectal tissue in prostate cancer patients who had radiation was almost twice as likely to develop rectal cancer as untreated sites in patients who had surgery.
Disease
Diabetes mellius linked to dementia
The Rotterdam Study, published in Neurology, found diabetes almost doubled the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with patients on insulin 330% more likely to develop dementia. The author notes this could reflect either the severity of the disease or the insulin treatment itself.
Drug
What type, dose of aspirin best for cardiovascular disease prevention?
A review of aspirin data from 11 randomized trials covering 104,101 subjects indicates a daily dose near 100 mg most likely lowers death, cancer and cancer death, while higher doses work better against cardiovascular events. Coated and controlled-release forms differed.
Drug
Statins may cut pancreatic cancer risk in diabetes mellitus patients
Drawing on Taiwan's National Health Insurance data from 1997-2010, researchers found pancreatic cancer in 0.14 percent of diabetes patients taking higher annual statin doses, against 0.25 percent among those taking little or none. Risk fell as the annual dose rose.
Drug
Breast cancer treatment ups death risk from cardiovascular disease
A study of 1,413 women with breast cancer and 1,411 matched controls found survivors nearly twice as likely to die over 14 years of follow-up, with the raised cardiovascular death risk showing up seven years after diagnosis. Chemotherapy was linked to that risk.

Zika virus: What you need to know? - updated
A Q&A describes Zika as spread by daytime Aedes mosquitoes, usually causing a mild week-long illness but posing danger in pregnancy. A February 2016 update adds that no evidence yet confirms the virus causes microcephaly, and that sexual transmission has been reported.

Harms from breast cancer screening - new review
A review in Annals of Internal Medicine finds false positives common, with some studies putting rates at 61% for annual screening versus 42% for biennial, and estimates that 2 to 10 of every 100,000 women screened by digital mammography die of radiation-induced cancer.
Drug
Bisphosphonates help some breast cancer patients
A Lancet meta-analysis of 18,766 women with early breast cancer found that among postmenopausal patients, bisphosphonate treatment cut recurrence 14%, bone recurrence 28% and breast cancer mortality 18%. No benefit appeared in premenopausal patients, and deaths from other causes were unchanged.

Electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi routers affect liver enzymes
A rat study released in November 2015 reported that exposure to 2.45 GHz Wi-Fi router radiation altered liver enzyme activity and shifted blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and HDL. Vitamin C at 250 mg per kg a day appeared to reduce the harm.
Disease
Type 2 diabetes mellitus linked to kidney stones
A study in Advanced Biomedical Research found kidney stones at least 30 percent more common in people with type 2 diabetes, with uric acid stones making up 36 percent of their stones against 11 percent in non-diabetics. Their urine was more acidic, pH 5.61 against 6.87.

Mobile phone use increases brain cancer glioma risk
A pooled case-control analysis by Lennart Hardell and Michael Carlberg found mobile phone use over a latency of more than 25 years associated with a 200% higher glioma risk, a weaker association for cordless phones, and greater risk among users who started before age 20.
Disease
Antibiotics boost diabetes mellitus risk
