Two studies by University of Michigan epidemiologist Eduardo Villamor suggest vitamin A and beta-carotene supplements raise HIV levels in breast milk, possibly by increasing subclinical mastitis. He says the supplements do not look like a safe intervention for HIV-positive women.

Phytochemicals
More antioxidants found in black rice than blueberries
A study presented at an American Chemical Society meeting found a spoonful of black rice bran holds more anthocyanin antioxidants than a spoonful of blueberries, plus more fibre and vitamin E and less sugar. Anthocyanins have been linked to lower heart disease and cancer risk.

CDC lowers estimate of annual flu deaths
CDC now puts seasonal influenza-associated deaths at about two-thirds of the roughly 33,000 a year it long cited when promoting flu vaccine. The editor notes the estimate lumps pneumonia and influenza causes together, and that critics put the influenza-only toll near 300.
Vitamins
This Could Be Even BIGGER than the Vitamin D Discovery…
Researcher Cees Vermeer argues most people get enough vitamin K to clot blood but not enough for its other benefits, and that blood tests mainly reflect yesterday's diet. K1, from green vegetables, supports clotting and helps keep blood vessels from calcifying.

Avoiding This "Forbidden Food" Could Make You Moody
Dr. Mercola defends unrefined natural salt as essential to blood plasma, nutrient transport, blood pressure regulation and nerve signalling, while agreeing processed foods carry far too much sodium. He notes salts differ widely by origin and processing.

The Foods You Shouldn't Touch With a Ten Foot Pole
Mercola discusses a study comparing children in a rural African village with children in Italy: the African children carried less obesity-linked bacteria and more anti-inflammatory fatty acids. The researchers suggest Western diets may reduce microbial richness.

Vitamin D May Protect Against Certain Cancers
An Oxford-led study in Genome Research found vitamin D receptor binding sites clustered near genes tied to multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, colorectal cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and traced direct interaction in 200 genes.

Weight loss is easy! Just drink 2 cups of water before meals
Overweight and obese adults aged 55 to 75 who drank two cups of water before each meal lost 15.5 pounds over 12 weeks on a low-calorie diet, against 11 pounds for those who did not, Virginia Tech researchers told an American Chemical Society meeting.

Bottled tea may contain no antioxidants
Wellgen chemist Shiming Li told an American Chemical Society meeting that six brands of bottled tea held 81, 43, 40, 13, 4 and 3 milligrams of polyphenols per 16-ounce bottle, against 50 to 150 milligrams in a cup of home-brewed tea. He says many also carry high amounts of sugar.

Binge drinking lethal for men with hypertension
Following 6,100 Korean residents aged 55 and older for nearly 21 years, researchers found men with Grade 3 hypertension who also binge drank were 12 times as likely to die of heart attack or stroke as non-drinkers with normal blood pressure.
Vitamins
Ketamine fights depression, so does vitamin D
Yale researchers mapped ketamine's action in the rat prefrontal cortex and found it works through a pathway requiring mTOR that quickly forms new synaptic connections, which may explain why it lifts depression within hours. The drug must still be given intravenously and can cause psychotic symptoms.

Important Vitamin Deficiency Linked to Arterial Stiffness
In a trial of 44 black teenagers, 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day reduced central arterial stiffness and on average brought participants to sufficiency, while the 400 IU dose recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics did not.

B Vitamins and the Aging Brain Examined
In the Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging, which enrolled nearly 1,800 Hispanic seniors, blood analysis tied lower folate to dementia symptoms and cognitive decline even though under 1 percent were deficient. Among women only, the lowest third for folate had twice the depression symptoms.

What causes psoriasis? Beer or vitamin D deficiency?
Women in the Nurses' Health Study II who drank five or more non-light beers a week were 2.3 times as likely to have confirmed psoriasis as non-drinkers, a survey of 82,860 women found. Light beer, wine and liqueurs showed no such link.

If You Want to Age Gracefully - Don't Eat This
Mercola relays U.S. News tips for slowing aging: limit free radical sources such as cigarettes, trans fats and charred meat; fight inflammation with a Mediterranean-style diet, turmeric and exercise; cook at lower heat to limit glycation end products; and manage stress and sleep.

Additional Opportunities to Prevent Neural Tube Defects with Folic Acid Fortification
A CDC Grand Rounds report notes U.S. pregnancies affected by neural tube defects fell from about 4,000 in 1995-96 to 3,000 in 1999-2000 after folic acid fortification was mandated, and that adequate periconceptional folic acid can prevent 50 to 70 percent of cases.

Adequate Zinc Eases Pneumonia in Elderly
In an analysis of nursing facility residents, those with normal blood zinc levels were about 50 percent less likely to develop pneumonia than residents with low levels, and they also had fewer antibiotic prescriptions, shorter pneumonia and lower mortality.

Studies explain why girls enter puberty as young as age 7
Analyzing 1,238 girls aged 6 to 8 in three US cities, researchers found 15% of Latina, 10% of white and 25% of black girls entering puberty at age 7, with higher shares by age 8. Diet and environmental pollutants, including phthalates, are among the suspected causes.
