PCRM says it sued the FDA for failing to act on its petition asking the agency to point diabetes patients toward dietary alternatives on Avandia's label. The group cites a 2006 NIH-funded study that found a low-fat plant-based diet matched oral drugs at lowering blood sugar and cholesterol.

Honey Works Better than Drugs for Herpes!
Sixteen adults with recurrent oral and genital herpes treated one outbreak with honey and another with acyclovir cream. Healing ran 43 percent faster on the lips and 59 percent faster for genital sores with honey, and nobody reported side effects from it. Neither treatment cures herpes.

The Vitamin D Newsletter: Gary Null and Vitamin D Toxicity
The Vitamin D Council newsletter recounts Gary Null falling ill after a batch of his own supplement apparently held 2,000,000 IU of vitamin D3 per serving instead of 2,000 IU, and revisits 1930s reports of massive doses. The author warns readers not to try such doses.

Ancient Food Ingredients: What's Old is New
Mercola welcomes growing consumer interest in traditional ingredients such as Russian kefir, Japanese adzuki beans and European black currant, and argues that returning to whole foods can start reversing the damage done by years of processed eating.

Fructose promotes growth of pancreatic cancer
UCLA researchers compared how pancreatic cancer cells in Petri dishes use glucose and fructose, and found the cells route fructose through the non-oxidative pentose phosphate pathway to build nucleic acids for division. Lead author Anthony Heaney calls refined sugar a hidden danger.

Healthy Recipes: Whole-Wheat Pasta with Fennel, Peas and Arugula
Dana Jacobi's recipe for the American Institute for Cancer Research tops whole-wheat or farro spaghetti with sauteed fennel, baby peas and arugula brightened with lemon, finished with shaved pecorino and basil. She says it works hot or lukewarm.

Are Prescription Drugs Behind Troop Suicides?
Rosenberg notes the Army's suicide prevention report weighs the economy, repeated deployments and Army culture but barely examines the antidepressants, antipsychotics and antiseizure drugs whose use has risen in step with troop suicides since 2005.

Calcium supplements versus myocardial infarction: What you need to know
University of Auckland researchers pooled more than a dozen trials and epidemiological studies covering 11,921 participants followed about four years, and found people taking calcium supplements were 30 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack. None of them took vitamin D alongside the calcium.

Simple Strategies for Stopping Hot Flashes Naturally…
Researchers re-analyzed data on about 150 overweight and obese menopausal women and found those in an intensive weight-loss program were more than twice as likely as controls to report improved hot flashes. Only weight loss itself, not exercise or calorie cutting, tracked with the benefit.

Black tea helps fight diabetes mellitus
Iranian researchers gave 23 people with type 2 diabetes rising daily doses of black tea extract over four weeks. Antioxidant capacity rose in both the study and control groups, and those taking four cups' worth a day saw C-reactive protein fall and glutathione rise.

Calcium supplements boost myocardial infarction risk
A BMJ meta-analysis of 11 trials and five observational studies found osteoporosis patients taking calcium supplements without vitamin D were 30% more likely to have a heart attack. The link appeared in those whose dietary calcium already averaged above 805 mg a day.

Dementia patients can use high doses of vitamin E safely
Baylor researchers followed 849 Alzheimer's patients told to take 1,000 IU of vitamin E twice a day between 1990 and 2004. Those using vitamin E, with or without a cholinesterase inhibitor, were 23 percent less likely to die; those on the inhibitor alone faced 20 percent higher risk.

Boost Immunity With Food and Sun
ARS physiologist Charles Stephensen is measuring how much vitamin D people need for health, including immune function. Season, latitude, time outdoors, skin pigmentation and clothing all shape how much the body makes; salmon, fortified milk, cereals and supplements supply the rest.

Researchers Study Benefits of White Button Mushrooms
USDA-funded scientists at Tufts ran animal and cell-culture tests showing white button mushrooms boosted the maturity of dendritic cells from bone marrow and raised production of antiviral and other tissue-protecting proteins.

Vitamin D Helps Prevent Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission
A Journal of Infectious Diseases study of 884 HIV-infected women in Tanzania found those with low vitamin D were 50 percent more likely to pass HIV to their infants by six weeks. Maternal vitamin D status was not linked to low birth weight or preterm birth.

Gene Therapy Could be The Cure for HIV/AIDS
At the 18th International AIDS Conference in Vienna, researchers said antiretrovirals suppress active replication but cannot eradicate HIV. A Berlin patient given a bone marrow transplant from a donor lacking the CCR5 receptor has been off drugs for two years, pointing toward gene therapy.

Drinking Pu-erh Tea helps fight obesity
Chinese researchers fed rats a high-fat diet with pu-erh tea extract at 0.5 to 4 grams per kg and found lower body and fat-pad weight plus reduced cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL. They attribute it to raised activity of lipoprotein, hepatic and hormone-sensitive lipases.

Children with celiac disease should take vitamins
University of Alberta researchers studied 43 children and teens with celiac disease and found low bone density, insufficient vitamin D and under half the recommended vitamin K intake. Diana Mager recommends both vitamins plus daily outdoor activity to protect their bones.
