In UCSF research on childhood-onset multiple sclerosis, each 10 ng/mL rise in blood vitamin D corresponded to a 34 percent lower rate of later relapses. Lead author Ellen Mowry calls it the first look at vitamin D and disease course, and says it justifies a trial of supplementation.

Consumers over age 50 should consider steps to cut copper and iron intake (PR)
A report in Chemical Research in Toxicology argues copper and iron build-up may contribute to Alzheimer's and other age-related disease after 50, and lists steps: skip supplements containing them, eat less meat, avoid water from copper pipes, donate blood and take zinc.

First evidence that blueberry juice improves memory in older adults (PR)
Volunteers in their 70s with early memory decline who drank the equivalent of about 2.5 cups of blueberry juice daily for two months improved on learning and memory tests against a control group. The researchers call the findings preliminary.

FDA: Be aware of fake Alli
The FDA warned that counterfeit Alli 60 mg refill kits contain sibutramine, an appetite suppressant, rather than the fat-blocker orlistat. Sibutramine carries cardiovascular and other side effects. GlaxoSmithKline began receiving reports of the fakes, sold online, in early December 2009.

Gaines Adams dies with enlarged heart: What You Need to Know
Chicago Bears defensive lineman Gaines Adams, 26, died an hour after suffering cardiac arrest at his family's home in South Carolina, and an autopsy found an enlarged heart. Cardiomegaly is a sign of another condition rather than a disease in itself.

CDC Releases Swine Flu Vaccine Statistics
As of January 2, about 61 million Americans, a fifth of the population, had received the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, the CDC reported, including 29.4 percent of children aged 6 months to 18 years. All key flu indicators declined during the first week of January.

20% Americans got swine flu vaccine - CDC
CDC surveys estimate that by January 2, 2010 about 20.3% of the U.S. population, or 61 million people, had received the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, including 27.9% of the initial target groups and 29.4% of children aged 6 months to 18 years.

Omega 6 Fat Raises Prostate Cancer Risk; Omega-3 Fats Cut It
A Nigerian study in Ethnicity & Disease found men in the third quartile of total omega-6 fatty acids had 133 percent higher prostate cancer risk than those in the lowest, while men with EPA and DPA in the second quartile were 61 and 21 percent less likely to have the cancer.
Diet
Mediterranean Diet Prevents Stomach Cancer
In the EPIC study of 485,044 Europeans, those adhering most closely to the Mediterranean diet had a 33% lower risk of stomach cancer, with each one-point rise on an 18-point adherence scale linked to a 5% reduction.
Vitamins
Calcium, Vitamin D used Together Cut Fracture Risk
A Copenhagen meta-analysis of seven trials covering 68,517 people averaging age 70 found vitamin D alone did not change fracture risk, while vitamin D with calcium cut overall fractures 8% and hip fractures 16%. The authors disclosed fees from major drug makers.
Diet
Diet Affects Breast Cancer Risk
Mexican researchers reviewed 27 studies from Latin America and the Caribbean, linking fruit, vegetables, fish, fiber and folate to lower breast cancer risk and calories, red and processed meat, dairy, saturated fat and sucrose to higher risk. They call the food-specific evidence inconclusive.

Vitamin C Protects Against Hypertension-Induced DNA Damage
In 32 male Wistar rats with surgically induced renovascular hypertension, seven days of vitamin C at 150 mg/kg protected blood, brain, liver and heart cells against hypertension-induced DNA damage and eased the hypertension itself, a Human & Experimental Toxicology study found.

Why You Don't Want to Rely on Fortified Foods
Milk and other fortified foods often carry synthetic vitamin D2, which the piece says is less potent, shorter-lived and toxic at lower levels, with studies tying it to blood vessel irritation. Boston University testing found 8 of 10 milk samples missed their labeled vitamin D by 20 percent or more.

Culprit Compounds That Block Beans' Healthful Iron Probed
ARS physiologist Raymond Glahn and Cornell colleagues are tracing the compounds that block iron absorption from beans, following cell-culture work that flagged the polyphenol kaempferol as a likely culprit in red and pinto beans. Poultry trials now follow up that finding.

Mango effective in preventing, stopping certain colon, breast cancer cells (PR)
Texas AgriLife Research food scientists tested the five mango varieties most common in the U.S. and found they prevented or stopped growth in certain breast and colon cancer cell lines. Dr. Susanne Talcott notes mango's antioxidant capacity is far below blueberry, acai or pomegranate.

Gluten-free vegan diet helps rheumatoid arthritis
A one-year study of 66 rheumatoid arthritis patients in Arthritis Research & Therapy found a gluten-free vegan diet lowered body mass index and LDL cholesterol and raised anti-PC IgM compared with a well-balanced non-vegan diet.

Alzheimer’s news: Cocktail of nutrients helps Alzheimer's patients
MIT's Richard Wurtman and colleagues gave 225 Alzheimer's patients a 12-week drink of choline, uridine, DHA, B vitamins and antioxidants or a placebo. Verbal memory improved in 40 percent on the drink against 24 percent on placebo, with the mildest cases benefiting most. Danone funded the trial.

Nutrient mix shows promise in improving memory (PR)
In a trial of 225 Alzheimer's patients, a cocktail of uridine, choline and omega-3 fatty acids plus B vitamins, phospholipids and antioxidants improved verbal memory in those with mild disease. Richard Wurtman designed it to target synapse loss, which he believes is the root cause.
