Kevin Fiscella's team analysed 15,000 U.S. adults and found the most severe vitamin D deficiency came with a 40% higher risk of cardiac death, with risk falling as vitamin D levels rose. Black participants were 38% more likely to die than whites.

Pomegranate compounds may prevent hormone-dependent breast cancer
City of Hope researchers screened 10 ellagitannin-derived compounds from pomegranates and found they inhibit aromatase, the enzyme converting androgen to estrogen; the metabolite urolithin B notably slowed cell growth. Outside experts caution that ellagitannins absorb poorly from the diet.

Depression News: Sleep, vitamin D help depression
A small trial in Applied Nursing Research gave vitamin D3 to nine women with serum levels below 40 ng/mL. The six who finished raised their levels by an average 27 ng/mL and dropped their Beck Depression Inventory-II scores by about 10 points, which the authors call suggestive.

Vitamin D deficiency linked to high risk of dementia
A Neurology study of 340 people aged 65 to 99 found those with insufficient vitamin D were twice as likely to have dementia, Alzheimer's or stroke. After adjustment, insufficiency was tied to 130 percent higher all-cause dementia risk and 100 percent higher stroke risk.
Supplements
Ginkgo biloba helps people with dementia
A six-year trial of 3,069 adults aged 72 to 96 found 120 mg of ginkgo biloba extract twice daily did nothing for global cognition, memory, language, attention or executive function. Whether the dose was optimal, or the findings apply to other ages, remains unknown.
Supplements
Nzu, Traditional Remedy for Morning Sickness
Texas health officials and the FDA warned pregnant and breastfeeding women to avoid Nzu, a clay remedy for morning sickness sold at African specialty stores, after lab analysis found high levels of lead and arsenic. The piece also lists ginger, vitamin B6 and small frequent meals.

232 Toxic Chemicals found in 10 Babies
Tests commissioned by the Environmental Working Group found BPA in nine of 10 cord blood samples from American newborns, and as many as 232 chemicals across the 10 babies, all of minority descent. A separate report found pregnancy complications lowest in women with the highest vitamin D levels.

Ginkgo Biloba Extract Effective in Treating Dementia
An Austrian review of 10 randomized, double-blind trials concluded Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 treats dementia at least as well as commonly prescribed drugs. Three of four large trials beat placebo; the one inconclusive trial used unusually strict patient selection.

Putting Limits on Vitamin E (PR)
A Tel Aviv University team pooled the clinical data on vitamin E and heart disease and warns that indiscriminate high-dose supplementation does more harm than good. The researchers say some people may be harmed and others may benefit, and are working out who gains.
Supplements
Ginkgo biloba doesn't help cognitive decline
In a trial of 3,069 adults aged 72 to 96 who took 120 mg of ginkgo extract twice daily for about six years, researchers found no effect on cognitive decline. The piece notes the result may not apply to younger people and that the dose may not have been optimal.

Avoid These 7 Foods and You're Off To A Healthier New Year
Mercola's experts name foods to drop: canned tomatoes, whose acidity leaches BPA from can linings; corn-fed beef, lower in omega-3s and CLA than grass-fed; microwave popcorn, whose bag chemicals vaporize into the food; and non-organic potatoes, treated repeatedly with fungicides and herbicides.

Vitamin C enhances production of adult stem cells
Chinese researchers report in Cell Stem Cell that vitamin C improves the reprogramming of mouse and human adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells. Other antioxidants did not do the same, so the team suspects the effect is not simply antioxidant activity.

Citrus surprise: Vitamin C boosts the reprogramming of adult cells into stem cells (PR)
Researchers led by Duanqing Pei report that vitamin C improves the very low efficiency of reprogramming adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells, after they linked high reactive oxygen species to poor reprogramming. Cell Stem Cell published the work.

Vic Chesnutt dies after several days in a coma
Singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt died at 45 in Athens, Georgia, in a coma brought on by a muscle relaxer overdose. Whether it was intentional is unknown. The piece lists serious side effects of muscle relaxers, including breathing difficulty and chest tightness.

Your 7-Minute Guide to Natural Menopause Survival
Mercola describes menopause as the natural end of childbearing years, usually near 50, and notes that removing the ovaries or uterus skips the gradual taper, so hot flashes, dryness, mood swings and weight gain often intensify. He favors diet and exercise first.

Prevail Against Pests without Pesticides...
Mercola warns that household pesticides drift far beyond where they are sprayed, settling on surfaces, people, pets and plants indoors and out. He cites a reported 40 percent rise in annual US pesticide use since 1993 and more than 4.5 billion pounds now applied each year.

Could This New American Obsession Stop Flu in its Tracks?
Hand sanitizer sales rose from $69 million to $118 million during the H1N1 scare. Mercola grants that germs do not become resistant to alcohol, but warns that washing too often strips protective skin oils, and cracked skin gives pathogens a way in.
