Pomegranate the most potent supplemental antioxidant?
Researchers compared pomegranate, milk thistle, green tea, grape seed, goji and acai supplements and ranked pomegranate the most potent antioxidant before digestion. Simulated digestion raised activity for pomegranate, milk thistle, goji and acai, and lowered it for green tea and grape seed.

Selenium supplements prevent and treat PTSD
A study of patients at risk of post-traumatic stress disorder found selenium supplementation cut symptom severity by 5.85 percent and prevalence by 46.03 percent from baseline. The researchers tie PTSD to oxidative stress, which selenium may reduce.
Supplements
Betaine helps weight loss, sports performance
A review in Amino Acids reports betaine at 500 to 9,000 mg a day has been tied to fat loss and lean mass gains, possibly by promoting lipolysis and boosting growth hormone and creatine synthesis, though results across studies were not consistent.
Supplements
Dietary supplements psoriasis patients often use
A Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology report says psoriasis patients often take vitamin D, vitamin B12, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. The authors call the evidence for fish oil strong, but say other alternative remedies need more research.

Calcium supplements don't raise cardiovascular risk - new study
Among 74,245 women followed 24 years in the Nurses' Health Study, those taking more than 1,000 mg of supplemental calcium a day were 18 percent less likely to develop cardiovascular disease and 26 percent less likely to develop coronary heart disease, with no apparent change in stroke risk.
Supplements
Tryptophan rich protein hydrolysate may help depression
In a trial of 60 healthy women aged 45 to 65, 2 grams a day of a tryptophan-rich egg white hydrolysate prevented the drop in wellbeing and rise in fatigue seen in the control group and reduced negative bias. It showed no effect on cognition and no adverse effects.
Diet
Diet important for multiple sclerosis
A literature review reports people with multiple sclerosis ate more animal products, whole milk and sweets and less fish, produce and cereal than healthy people, and that patients who closely followed the low-saturated-fat Swank diet were three times less likely to die of the disease.
Vitamins
Folate, vitamin B12 linked to prostate cancer
A review in Advances in Clinical Chemistry reports meta-analyses tying high circulating vitamin B12 and folate to 10% and 18% higher prostate cancer risk. The author says the B12 link could be reverse causality, and urges caution over mandatory folate fortification given how common the disease is.
Supplements
Marine supplements prevent obesity, diabetes mellitus
A review lists marine-derived compounds studied for preventing or treating obesity and diabetes, among them fucoxanthin from brown seaweed, astaxanthin from marine algae, marine collagen peptides, dieckol, krill oil and fucoidan.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplements lower death risk from diseases
A BMJ review of 73 cohort studies and 22 trials found people with the lowest circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D were 35 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease and 35 percent more likely to die of any cause. Vitamin D3 supplements cut all-cause mortality by 11 percent.

Synthetic folate boosts breast cancer risk - study
European American women with the highest intake of synthetic folate were 53% more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those with the lowest, an International Journal of Cancer study found, while folate from natural foods was tied to lower risk in Black women.
Food
Study explains why green tea could prevent pancreatic cancer
Researchers report that EGCG, green tea's major catechin, cut lactate production, anaerobic glycolysis, glucose consumption and glycolytic rate in MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cells, matching what oxamate achieves by inhibiting the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase A.

Lack libido? Try choline supplements!
A case report in Archives of Sexual Behavior describes a 79-year-old man taking choline for memory loss who developed strong hypersexuality after six weeks; it disappeared within five days of stopping. The authors suggest cholinergic supplements be considered in such cases.
Vitamins
Vitamin supplements prevent hearing loss in older people
Data on 1,910 Korean adults aged 50 to 80 showed supplement users hearing better at all frequencies, with vitamin C intake tied to better mid-frequency hearing. Retinol, riboflavin and niacin intake also correlated with better hearing; higher serum vitamin D correlated with worse.

Eating prunes can help weight loss
In a 12-week University of Liverpool study, 100 overweight low-fibre eaters either ate prunes daily or received healthy-snack advice. The prune group lost 2kg and 2.5cm from the waist against 1.5kg and 1.7cm, reported more fullness after week eight and tolerated the doses well.
Herbs
Curry leaf may protect against breast cancer
Malaysian curry leaf extracts from Kelantan carried the highest phenolic, flavonoid and antioxidant levels of three locations sampled, and preliminary screening showed extracts from all three inhibited growth of the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line, Kelantan most strongly.
Supplements
Fat Modifying Supplemental Weight Loss Products
A review of randomized placebo-controlled trials of fat-modifying weight loss supplements found CLA, chitosan, pyruvate and Irvingia gabonensis appeared effective, but on limited data. The authors say little clinical evidence supports these products and urge providers to weigh risks and benefits.
