Researchers treated human lymphocytes with hydrogen peroxide plus antioxidants and found dietary flavonoids such as luteolin, myricetin and quercetin protected against DNA damage more effectively than vitamin C, dose-dependently, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Supplements
Caffeine boosts exercise performance by enhancing fat metabolism
Nine competitive cyclists rode an average of 90 minutes after drinking coffee with 330 mg of caffeine, against 76 minutes after decaffeinated coffee. Fat oxidation rose to 1.31 grams per minute from 0.75, while carbohydrate metabolism was similar in the small trial.
Supplements
Selaginella tamariscina extract may help prevent lung cancer from spreading ***
Taiwanese researchers report that Selaginella tamariscina extract cut the invasion and motility of lung cancer cells in the lab and curbed tumor growth and spread in mice, lowering matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9. They call it a candidate antimetastatic agent against lung cancer.
Supplements
Antioxidants N-acetylcysteine, procysteine prevent alcohol-induced ciliary dysfunction
Mice drinking 20% alcohol for six weeks lost ciliary function, but those also fed N-acetylcysteine or procysteine kept it, a study in Alcohol reports. Neither supplement restored nitric oxide levels in lavage fluid. The authors say the results support testing antioxidants in heavy drinkers.
Supplements
Creatine supplementation helps knee osteoarthritis
In a small randomized, double-blind trial, postmenopausal women with knee osteoarthritis doing resistance training who took creatine improved in physical function, stiffness, lower-limb lean mass and quality of life, while the placebo group showed no significant change.
Supplements
Creatine supplements help patients fibromyalgia
In a 16-week randomized, double-blind trial reported in Arthritis Care and Research, fibromyalgia patients who took creatine gained muscle phosphorylcreatine and strength in the leg and chest press. Creatine did not change pain, sleep, cognition or quality of life.

Here is why cholesterol linked to breast cancer and maybe other cancers too*****
A Cell Reports study found the cholesterol metabolite 27-hydroxycholesterol promotes ER-positive breast tumor growth in mice. Patients' tumors carried higher 27-HC and less of the enzyme that clears it, and lower enzyme levels tracked with poorer survival.
Supplements
Vitamin E, vitamin C help traumatic brain injury
Rats given 45 or 60 mg/kg of ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol or both for two weeks before and after brain injury showed restored vitamin and superoxide dismutase levels and less malondialdehyde. The authors report the treatment cut oxidative stress and mortality in rats.
Herbs
Ayurvedic herbal supplements help erectile dysfunction, reproductive function
Four Ayurvedic herb extracts, including Asparagus racemosus and Chlorophytum borivilianum, raised sperm count, seminal fructose and penile erection index in male rats dosed at 100 mg per kg. The authors tie the erectile effect to nitric oxide release.
Supplements
Guarana helps fatigue in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy
In a trial reported in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, breast cancer patients taking 50 mg of guarana twice daily after their first chemotherapy cycle improved on several fatigue measures at days 21 and 49, without added toxicity, anxiety or sleep problems.
Supplements
Melatonin helps prevent and treat breast cancer
A review in Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs suggests melatonin could reduce the oxidative stress of chemotherapy and radiotherapy for breast cancer and might serve as an adjuvant in prevention, citing its estrogen receptor and enzyme modulating properties.
Food
Early nutrition affects leukemia risk
A Cancer Causes & Control study of 139 Greek children with leukemia found higher intake of added lipids linked to greater risk, while milk and dairy products and high protein intake were linked to lower risk. The authors suggest early-life diet may matter for prevention.
Food
It's saturated fat from meat, not obesity that boosts breast cancer risk
In a Breast Cancer Research study, mice exposed to a carcinogen during puberty and fed a 60% fat, mostly lard diet developed mammary tumors earlier than those on a low-fat diet, and a later low-fat diet did not undo the effect. Risk did not track weight gain.
Herbs
Drinking tea lowers stroke risk
Analysing data from earlier studies, researchers tied high tea consumption to 21% lower risk of suffering or dying from a stroke, with three or more cups a day showing a similar reduction. The highest flavonoid intakes corresponded to a 20% reduction.
Nutrition
Type 2 diabetes mellitus linked to liver cancer
In the Singapore Chinese Health Study, people with type 2 diabetes were more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with liver cancer over 14 years. 499 of 63,257 participants developed the cancer, and the link fell mainly among those never infected with hepatitis B or C.
Vitamins
Here is why vitamin C protects against influenza virus infection
Researchers report that vitamin C-insufficient Gulo(-/-) mice died within a week of intranasal influenza H3N2 inoculation, with higher lung viral titers and less interferon-alpha/beta but more inflammatory cells and TNF-alpha, suggesting vitamin C aids early antiviral responses.
Nutrition
Insulin use tied to high risk of bladder cancer mortality in type 2 diabetes patients
Following 86,939 Taiwanese patients with type 2 diabetes from 1995 through 2006, a Clinical Genitourinary Cancer study found insulin users nearly twice as likely to die of bladder cancer, and those who used insulin and smoked three times as likely as those who did neither.

NBC Says It's Useless, But It May Slash Your Risk of 16 Different Cancers
Dr. Mercola disputes NBC's report that vitamin supplements do not prevent heart disease or cancer, citing Andrew Saul's rebuttal that the Kaiser Permanente analysis rested on 24 preselected studies, and Saul's list of 19 studies pointing the other way.
