A meta-analysis of 21 prospective studies covering 76,220 people and 4,996 diabetes cases found those with the lowest vitamin D levels had a 38% higher risk of type 2 diabetes than those with the highest, with each 10 nmol/L rise in 25(OH)D tied to 4% lower risk.

Body fortress names IFBB PRO and active duty U.S. Marine XAVISUS GAYDEN to athlete roster
Body Fortress signed IFBB Pro Xavisus Gayden, the first active-duty U.S. Marine to earn an IFBB Pro card, to its athlete roster. He will appear in brand advertising, write fitness articles for its newsletter and make event appearances; he is based at Camp Pendleton in California.

Vitamin D helps long-term memory in multiple sclerosis
In a small trial of 35 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, higher serum vitamin D tracked with better immediate and delayed recall on the Rey Complex Figure Test, even after adjusting for intelligence and disease duration. Mood and verbal memory showed no link.
Minerals
Dementia news: Magnesium supplementation treats dementia
Two Turkish researchers writing in Medical Hypotheses propose that magnesium, used alongside drugs such as memantine, could be useful in treating dementia, citing studies showing magnesium acts on many biochemical pathways and can facilitate learning.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids improve conditions induced by vitamin B12 deficiency/supplementation
In rats, a vitamin B12-deficient or B12-supplemented diet during pregnancy and lactation reduced litter size and offspring body weight, while adding long-chain omega-3 fatty acids eased the effect. The researchers link the two nutrients through the one-carbon cycle.
Supplements
Cystine based antioxidant prevents aging-related loss of muscle mass
Seventeen-month-old mice fed a cystine-based supplement of L-cystine, glycine, selenomethionine and glutamine for six months lost significantly less muscle mass, and showed fewer of the oxidative stress, inflammation and muscle cell death markers that rose with age.

Vitamin D during pregnancy may cut risk of childhood cancers
Rather than testing supplements, researchers estimated pregnant women's solar UV exposure and found the most exposed had 11%, 31% and 29% lower risk of a child diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia, hepatoblastoma or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma between ages 0 and 5.
Herbs
Dietary supplement Adhatoda, benefits, uses, indications, dosages, side effects, and cautions
A monograph on the Ayurvedic herb adhatoda: its alkaloids vasicine and vasicinone, reported cough-suppressing, anti-obstruction and anti-inflammatory effects, animal data on liver protection, uses from asthma to jaundice, and doses of 1-3 ml of liquid or 0.5-1.5 g of dried herb daily.
Supplements
Resveratrol prevents HFCS-induced vascular insulin resistance
Rats fed 20% of calories as high fructose corn syrup for 12 weeks developed raised triglycerides, VLDL cholesterol, glucose and insulin and impaired insulin-mediated relaxation. Adding resveratrol at 28-30 mg/kg restored many of those changes, possibly via eNOS and iNOS.

Vitamin D predicts risk of death patients suffering acute ischemic stroke
Among 231 Chinese patients treated for acute ischemic stroke, those with low serum vitamin D were 30% more likely to die within 90 days and 21% more likely to have a poorer short-term outcome. Stroke patients averaged 14.2 ng/mL against 17.9 in controls.
Vitamins
Cooking and vitamin D retention
Danish researchers found eggs and margarine baked 40 minutes in an oven retained only 39 to 45 percent of their vitamin D, while pan-frying retained 82 to 84 percent and boiled eggs 86 to 88 percent. Baked rye bread kept 69 percent and wheat bread 85 percent.
Vitamins
Vitamin D prevents a variety of diseases
Pawel Pludowski and colleagues reviewed observational studies and randomized trials and concluded that adequate vitamin D status appears protective against musculoskeletal disorders, infections, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, several cancers and mental illness.
Vitamins
Vitamin E, vitamin C, niacin prevent dementia, boost cognitive function
Among 3,385 Japanese-American men aged 71 to 93 in the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, those taking both vitamin E and C supplements were 82 percent less likely to be diagnosed with vascular dementia and scored better on cognitive tests. Neither vitamin was linked to Alzheimer's risk.
Vitamins
Alzheimer's disease may benefit from Coenzyme Q10 supplementation
Older mice fed 2.81 mg per gram of coenzyme Q10 for 15 weeks did better in the Morris water maze and showed less protein oxidative damage than mice on a control diet, a study in the journal Age reports, suggesting CoQ10 may counter age-related decline in spatial learning.
Herbs
Chinese herbal medicine may help type 2 diabetes mellitus
In rats made diabetic with a high-fat diet and streptozotocin, four weeks of ethanol or water extracts of Cyclocarya paliurus leaves improved glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity and HDL while lowering cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and free fatty acids.
Food
Many Ways Meat Causes Colon Cancer
A review in Nutrition Research lists wide-ranging reasons meat products may raise colorectal cancer risk, from naturally occurring components such as heme iron and protein to generated ones such as N-nitroso compounds and heterocyclic amines.
Supplements
Dietary supplements fight hepatitis C virus *****
A study in Antioxidants tested 45 milk thistle products and found silymarin content varied widely, from more than 75 percent active ingredient down to almost none, and that content tracked with how strongly a supplement acted against hepatitis C virus.
Supplements
Curcumin reduces fatty liver risk in those eating a high fat diet
Curcumin treatment lowered liver triglycerides and serum fetuin-A in rats eating a high-fat diet. Fetuin-A tracks with visceral obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and fatty liver, and the authors suggest its reduction may account for part of curcumin's benefit against obesity.
