A Fluoride Action Network newsletter reports that commissioners in Hernando County, Florida rejected fluoridation and that New South Wales legislators killed a bill forcing communities to fluoridate, plus pending votes in Owen Sound, Ontario and Hartford, Vermont.

Organic Consumers Association Newsletter: Wat the FDA hid from you
The Organic Consumers Association argues the FDA has long known routine antibiotic use in livestock harms human health and calls its December 2013 plan voluntary and loophole-ridden. It cites CDC figures of two million resistant infections and 23,000 deaths a year.

Do you know which foods are genetically engineered?
The Center for Food Safety describes its free True Food Shoppers Guide, first published in October 2000, which helps shoppers spot and avoid genetically engineered foods while US labeling remains absent, unlike in most of the country's major trading partners.

Fluoride Newly Identified as Dangerous to Brains
The Fluoride Action Network points to a March 2014 Lancet Neurology paper by Grandjean and Landrigan classing fluoride as a developmental neurotoxin. They cite a meta-analysis of 27 studies suggesting an average seven-point IQ decrement in children exposed to raised fluoride.

Toxin in seafood causes kidney damage in mice at levels considered safe for consumption (PR)
Mice given domoic acid, the shellfish toxin known for causing brain damage, showed kidney damage at concentrations 100 times lower than those producing neurological effects. The authors say officials may need to revisit safe limits for the toxin in seafood.

Smithsonian reports GMO soybean pollen threatens Mexican honey sales (PR)
Smithsonian researcher David Roubik and colleagues found GMO soybean pollen in six honey samples from nine hives in Campeche, the kind of contamination that leads European buyers to cut prices or reject Mexican honey. Scientific Reports published the work.

Liver tumors found in mice exposed to BPA (PR)
University of Michigan researchers found 27 percent of mice exposed to BPA through their mothers' diet during gestation and nursing developed liver tumours or precancerous lesions, with risk rising by dose. They say more research is needed on what this means for humans.

House Passes Farm Bill -- Vote Coming in Senate
The Fluoride Action Network reports that conference negotiators added language reversing EPA's proposed phase-out of sulfuryl fluoride by excluding non-pesticidal fluoride sources from exposure assessments. The House passed the 1,000-page bill 251-166, sending it to the Senate.

Exposure to pesticides results in smaller worker bees (PR)
Bumblebee colonies exposed to a pyrethroid pesticide produced smaller workers, Royal Holloway researchers report in the Journal of Applied Ecology. They tracked colony growth over four months and say smaller bees are likely less efficient at collecting nectar and pollen.

Fluoridation: Dirty Politics in New Zealand
A Fluoride Action Network fundraising bulletin, reporting $92,878 raised from 503 donors toward a $120,000 goal and introducing Mary Byrne's annual account of the fluoridation fight in New Zealand.

Cinnamon you use may contain toxic chemical coumarin
Cassia cinnamon, widely sold in the US simply as cinnamon, contains coumarin, a chemical known to damage the liver. True Ceylon cinnamon contains little of it.

Will Antibiotics Soon Be Gone From Meat? Dream On
Farm Sanctuary's Bruce Friedrich calls the FDA's livestock antibiotic guidance “a garden hose on a forest fire”: drug makers are asked to voluntarily drop growth-promotion wording from labels, while the same antibiotics stay legal for treating illness bred by crowded conditions.

Breast cancer news: Antibiotics may boost breast cancer risk
A case-control study in JAMA found women who used antibiotics for more than 1,000 days had roughly double the breast cancer risk of never-users, with risk climbing alongside cumulative days of use. The authors say more research is needed to show whether the link is causal or chance.

Politics vs Science: Keeping the journal Fluoride out of PubMed
A Fluoride Action Network fundraising bulletin arguing that PubMed's refusal to index the journal Fluoride, published since 1968, is political. It quotes a Fluoride editorial blaming the U.S. health department's endorsement of water fluoridation as completely safe.

FAN's Translation Project
The Fluoride Action Network describes its translation work: 48 foreign-language studies on fluoride toxicity translated between 2007 and 2012, and 19 more since October, covering musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, nervous system and male reproductive effects.

Aspartame controversy: Aspartame linked to antioxidant imbalance, mild vascular congestion
Rats given 1,000 mg/kg of aspartame daily for 180 days had lower reduced glutathione and glutathione reductase activity in the brain, plus mild vascular congestion. The article notes a 75-kg adult would have to drink 417 cans of diet soda a day to reach that dose.

USDA’s Salmonella Action Plan Misses the Mark (PR)
Wenonah Hauter of Food & Water Watch calls USDA's new Salmonella Action Plan repackaged deregulation: it would pull most FSIS inspectors off poultry lines, hand the work to company employees and allow 175 birds a minute. A GAO report found methodological flaws in the underlying pilot.

Zinc oxide causes damage to the heart, lipoic acid, vitamin E help reduce the toxicity
Rats given high doses of zinc oxide nanoparticles for five days showed heart damage and raised inflammatory markers including TNF-alpha, IL-6 and CRP. Alpha-lipoic acid or vitamin E significantly reduced the toxicity, and the authors say early treatment with either may offer protection.
