A Journal of Oleo Science study found oral doses of 600 or 1,000 mg/kg of titanium dioxide nanoparticles for five days raised kidney-function and inflammatory markers and lowered glutathione, with worse effects at the higher dose. Quercetin or idebenone significantly reduced the harm.

Gluten Disorders linked to GMOs-New Report
The Institute for Responsible Technology released a report proposing a link between genetically modified foods and gluten-related disorders, drawing on USDA data, EPA records, medical journal reviews and international research. It notes gluten-free eaters often shift to corn, 88 percent of it GM.

Acrylamide may cause some breast cancers
Among 62,573 Dutch women followed for 13 years, never-smokers with the highest acrylamide intake were 31 to 47 percent more likely to develop hormone receptor-positive breast cancer than those with the lowest. No link appeared for overall or receptor-negative breast cancer.

Lycopene lowers toxicity of fluoride
Twenty-four rats were split into four groups for five weeks. Sodium fluoride raised oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in red blood cells, heart and brain tissue and lowered glutathione and antioxidant capacity; rats given lycopene an hour beforehand had those changes normalized.

Dietary cholesterol increases serum cholesterol
In an early study, 75 men and 18 women ate a fat-free diet for eight days, then the same diet with cholesterol added in butter oil. Serum cholesterol rose with intake, by 25.3 mg per 100 ml at the lowest level and 71.7 mg per 100 ml among those consuming 2,494 mg a day.

Trans Fat: Taking the Next Important Step
FDA's Michael Taylor writes that trans fat raises LDL cholesterol and heart disease risk, that U.S. intake fell from 4.6 grams a day in 2003 to about 1 gram in 2012, and that eliminating industrially produced trans fat could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths a year.

Again trans fat linked to higher all-cause death risk
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition followed 18,513 REGARDS participants for seven years. After adjustment, those eating the most trans fat faced a 24% higher risk of death from any cause than those eating the least; researchers tied 7% of population deaths to trans fat.

Cracking Nut-Allergy Mechanisms
Agricultural Research Service chemists in New Orleans are studying how nut allergens interact with the immune system, including peptide differences between raw and cooked peanuts that may drive reactions. The piece notes food allergy rose 18% between 1997 and 2007.

The GMO Mini-Summit is off to an amazing start!
A newsletter recapping day one of an online GMO mini-summit: Vandana Shiva on the gene pool, Andrew Kimbrell on herbicide-resistant superweeds and crops pending approval for 2,4-D, and Robyn O'Brien on food allergy rates rising alongside GE crops.

Salmonella Poisoning: What you need to know
A question-and-answer piece on salmonellosis: symptoms appear within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food and last four to seven days, the CDC counts roughly 42,000 reported US cases and 400 deaths a year, and most people recover without treatment or antibiotics.
GMO
GE foods
An Environmental Working Group pledge drive for Washington state's I-522 ballot initiative requiring labels on genetically engineered ingredients, which food and chemical companies are spending millions to defeat.

Contaminants in US Meat
A rundown of what US meat carries. FSIS finds antibiotic residues above legal limits every week, including drugs whose labels warn against human use, and bacteria persist anyway: nearly half of supermarket beef, chicken, pork and turkey samples held staph, some of it MRSA.

Fluoride may be your next contraceptive?
NIH researchers compared silicofluorides with sodium fluoride in the test organism C. elegans and found all the fluoride chemicals in current use similarly toxic to growth, feeding and reproduction. The piece notes earlier work tying sodium fluoride to impaired sperm chemotaxis.

Announcing... The GMO Mini Summit!
The Institute for Responsible Technology, John and Ocean Robbins and the Food Revolution Network announce a free three-day online GMO Mini-Summit for October 25 to 27, 2013, with speakers on studies of GMOs and Roundup, GMO labeling efforts and avoiding GMOs at home.

Can Adding Fluoride to Milk Help Improve Children’s Dental Health?
Blackpool Council's health board has proposed adding fluoride to primary school milk; 43 percent of the town's 12-year-olds have at least one unhealthy tooth against 33.4 percent nationally. Ten other UK areas already do it, and a councilor says school dental programs should expand too.

Exclusive: Has GMO Alfalfa Already Contaminated Non-Alfalfa Fields?
Washington State officials confirmed GMO contamination after a farmer's hay was rejected for export, the Baltimore Sun reported on September 11. Mercola notes critics warned before the 2011 approval of Roundup-resistant alfalfa that cross-pollination could not be contained.

New Zealand's Fluoridation Status Hangs in the Balance
Fluoride Action Network New Zealand asks readers to help fund a TV Ondemand advertisement and billboards ahead of three fluoridation referenda held alongside local body elections. Hamilton's council voted to stop fluoridation, then agreed to put it to a referendum.

Attacks on Health Reporters and Their Readers Are Escalating
Mercola says a UNICEF report tracking pro-vaccine-safety voices in Central and Eastern Europe named him alongside sites such as GreenMedInfo and NaturalNews, and he reads the listing, and industry criticism of his Roundup and GMO reporting, as an attempt to discredit health writers.
