Mercola welcomes Portland's vote against fluoridating its Bull Run water supply, says he helped fund the campaign and was attacked in the media for selling a fluoride-free toothpaste, and repeats his view that fluoride accumulates in tissues and should never be swallowed deliberately.

Oops! Fluoride damages men's fertility - study
Rats exposed to fluoride in drinking water from before conception through puberty showed oxidative stress, testicular inflammation and increased germ cell death, researchers at Tongji Medical College report. The work examined molecular mechanisms behind fluoride's reproductive toxicity.

Trans fat kills - new study
Among 18,513 participants in the REGARDS study followed for seven years, those in the highest quintile of trans fat intake were 25 percent more likely to die of any cause than those in the lowest. The authors put the population attributable risk at 7 percent.
GMO
GE Food & Your Health
The FDA requires neither labeling nor pre-market safety testing of genetically engineered foods, and in a 1998 lawsuit conceded it had made “no dispositive scientific findings” about their safety. The piece argues gene cassettes new to the human diet warrant extensive testing.

GM wheat found in an Oregon field
USDA says unapproved Roundup Ready wheat turned up in an Oregon field, and Japan, South Korea, the EU and China have raised concerns or curbed U.S. wheat imports. The Center for Food Safety wants a moratorium on open-air field trials of engineered crops.

Keep GE Salmon Off Our Tables
Center for Food Safety, Friends of the Earth and thirty other groups are asking grocers, seafood companies and restaurants to pledge not to sell genetically engineered salmon. Target, Giant Eagle, Meijer and H-E-B join more than 55 retailers who committed earlier.

Sugar linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver
Reviewing the evidence in Pediatric Obesity, G.A. Bray and B.M. Popkin tie sugar-sweetened drinks to obesity, metabolic syndrome and fatty liver, and report that cutting intake reduces weight gain in adults and children. Two such drinks daily for six months produced those symptoms.
Chemical
Silica nanoparticles may cause cardiovascular disease
A Biomaterials study found silica nanoparticles, common in processed foods and supplements, caused pericardial toxicity and slowed the heart rate in zebra fish, and inhibited angiogenesis and heart development. The authors call the exposure a possible cardiovascular risk factor.
Chemical
Silicon dioxide causes fragmentation of DNA in all tissues of fish
R. Ramesh's team exposed zebra fish to 2.5 and 5 mg per liter of silicon dioxide nanoparticles for seven days. DNA from control tissues stayed intact while treated liver, muscle and gill tissue came back fragmented, with antioxidant enzymes altered.

Fluoride can cause infertility, anemia - breaking news
Chinese researchers report in Food and Chemical Toxicology that female rats given sodium fluoride in drinking water for six months had lower pregnancy rates, lower reproductive hormone levels, damaged endometrium and fewer ovarian follicles. The work was done in rats, not people.

Major victory in Portland Oregon - Residents say no to fluoridation
Portland voters rejected adding fluoridation chemicals to the city's water 61% to 39%. Clean Water Portland, formed in 2012, gathered more than 40,000 signatures in under 30 days to force the referendum after the City Council mandated fluoridation with little public input.
Chemical
Nitroso compounds linked to gastric cancer and esophageal cancer
Analyzing the Netherlands Cohort Study, researchers found each 0.1 ug/day of N-nitrosodimethylamine was linked to 15% higher risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and 6% higher risk of gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma. They saw no clear association among women.

Getting to the Root of How GMO Plants Harm Food Production and Your Health
Mercola interviews soil scientist Elaine Ingham, who says she was forced to resign from Oregon State after her research on genetically modified organisms threatened the university's biotech funding, and who now helps farmers assess the organisms their soil and plants depend on.

Industrial-grade Fluoridation Chemicals Cost Society $Billions in Arsenic-induced Cancers
Research in Environmental Science & Policy by former EPA scientists estimates that switching from industrial-grade hydrofluosilicic acid, which contains arsenic, to low-arsenic pharmaceutical-grade fluoride would save $1 billion to $14 billion a year in arsenic-induced cancers.

Pledge to Support States Against Monsanto’s Lawsuits to Stop GMO Labeling
An appeal for pledges toward a $1 million legal defense fund for states that pass GMO labeling laws, after Vermont's House voted 107-37 for labeling and Monsanto openly threatened to sue states that follow.
Chemical
Nanoparticles used in foods/dietary supplements found highly toxic
In tests on three bacteria, aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles proved far more toxic than their micro-scaled counterparts; titanium dioxide was the exception. Zinc oxide solutions killed all three species. These particles are used in foods, supplements and sunscreens.

Happy Belated Mother’s Day!
A newsletter message from the Institute for Responsible Technology thanking subscribers for Mother's Day and asking them to promote Moms Across America, a July 4th parade campaign for GMO labeling.

Oregon: Protect the NO GMO Vote!
An action alert asks Oregonians to urge their representatives to vote against SB 633, which would move control of local seed from communities to the state and block countywide GMO bans. It recounts Syngenta's admitted breach of the USDA's four-mile buffer for GE sugar beets.
