American ginseng is safe to use to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a 12-week double-blind trial of 74 people with well-controlled type 2 diabetes, 500 mg of American ginseng per meal left kidney, liver and hemostatic function unchanged from baseline, with no difference in the number or severity of adverse events versus placebo.

L-arginine supplements help type 2 diabetes mellitus
In diabetic rats, L-arginine supplementation preserved nitric oxide production, raised glomerular blood flow and filtration rate, and improved glucose tolerance. The authors say it may delay the onset of insulin resistance and renal dysfunction under hyperglycemic stress.

Supplements
Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may help prevent diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Comparing 51 patients with both type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease against three other groups, researchers found that group had the worst insulin resistance, liver enzyme and lipid levels, and the lowest serum omega-3 levels. Omega-3 levels tracked inversely with insulin resistance.

Pigmented rice bran, plant sterols lower cholesterol
Twenty-four overweight adults on a 25 percent calorie-reduced diet lost about 4.7 kg over eight weeks whether they took pigmented rice bran alone or with plant sterols. The combination cut cholesterol far more, 36 versus 7 g/dL, and LDL by 22.3 versus 4.4 g/dL.
