Mice given maltodextrin plus L-proline and DL-alanine before running held higher blood sugar late in exercise and lasted longer before exhaustion than mice given maltodextrin alone. The authors conclude the combination helps endurance performance in mice.

Supplements
Saffron supplements prevent exercise induced soreness or pain
In a trial of 39 inactive male college students, 300 mg of dried saffron daily for 10 days lowered plasma creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase and prevented exercise-induced pain. Saffron takers also avoided the drop in isometric and isotonic force seen in controls.
Supplements
Ginkgo biloba helps diabetes mellitus type 2
In obese rats fed a high-fat diet, Ginkgo biloba extract at 500 mg/kg reduced food intake and body fat, prevented high blood sugar and dyslipidemia, and improved insulin sensitivity by acting on the insulin signaling cascade. The study was done in rats, not people.
Supplements
Otostegia persica good for hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol
Iranian scientists reviewing studies published between 2003 and 2013 report that Otostegia persica, a plant of southern Iran, is reputed to treat diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and shows antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
Supplements
Whey protein helps skeletal muscle satellite cells
In a study of 24 healthy young adults who performed 150 maximal eccentric contractions, those given hydrolyzed whey protein with carbohydrate had more type II fiber-associated satellite cells at 48 hours and faster regeneration than carbohydrate-only controls.
Supplements
Antioxidants prevent acute heart attack
A case-control study of 760 heart attack patients and 682 controls in Italy reports that dietary non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity was inversely associated with acute myocardial infarction. The authors say the results support eating more fruit and vegetables.
Supplements
Soy protein isolates versus whey protein isolates, which is better?
Rats fed whey protein for more than 12 weeks excreted more calcium and had more acidic urine than rats fed soy protein, though the groups showed no difference in kidney structure or plasma markers. The researchers suggest soy protein leaves a more alkaline plasma and urinary profile.
Supplements
Sexual enhancement ingredients may induce hallucination
A review reports that sexual enhancement ingredients sold online, including yohimbine, maca, horny goat weed and ginkgo biloba, may bring mood changes, anxiety, hallucinations and addictive behavior. The authors warn this could be especially risky for users who also have psychiatric disorders.
Supplements
Melatonin reduces oxidative stress in traumatic brain
In rats with traumatic brain injury, cerebral cortex levels of beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione fell, and melatonin treatment raised them again. The Neural Regeneration Research authors conclude melatonin appears to protect by inhibiting free radical formation.
Supplements
Ginkgo biloba boosts neurogenesis, helps recovery following a stroke in mice
University of Toledo researchers report that mice given Ginkgo biloba four hours after an induced stroke, then daily for a week, recovered better and had less brain damage than controls, along with more neurogenesis linked to raised hemeoxygenase 1 expression.
Supplements
Fish oil reduces cognitive decline, brain atrophy
A retrospective cohort study of Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative participants links fish oil supplement use to better cognitive test scores and less atrophy in one or more brain regions. The apparent benefits appeared only in those negative for APOE ε4.
Supplements
MS patients may need vitamin supplements
A survey found 77 percent of people with multiple sclerosis had used complementary or alternative medicine in the past year, most often vitamins and minerals. Paleo dieters fell short on vitamins D and E, and Swank dieters on vitamins A, C, E and folate.
Supplements
How does L-carnitine maintain the normal structure of sciatic nerve in crush injury?
After researchers crushed rat sciatic nerves, 30 days of L-carnitine at 50 or 100 mg/kg left axon and myelin measurements close to normal and improved nerve function, a team writing in Neural Regeneration Research reports.
Supplements
Better weight loss diet supplemented with caffeine
Overweight and obese women who added caffeine at 5 mg per kilogram of body weight to a calorie-shifting diet lost 7.6 kg against 5.7 kg for the diet alone over four weeks, and the gap widened after a month of maintenance eating.
Supplements
Fish oil reduces risk of dementia
In cultures of adult rat brain cells exposed to alcohol at four times the legal driving limit, adding the fish oil compound DHA cut neuroinflammation and cell death by up to 90 percent, Loyola researchers report in PLOS ONE.
Supplements
Probiotics may help fight fatty liver
University of Granada researchers gave obese rats three probiotic strains for thirty days and saw less fat build up in the liver, the first stage of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The work, published in PLOS ONE, was done in rats.
Supplements
n-3 PUFAs prevent endometrial cancer
In preclinical models, the omega-3 fatty acid DHA curbed endometrial cancer cell proliferation, colony formation and migration in a dose- and time-dependent way, and promoted apoptosis. The researchers point to suppression of mTORC1 and mTORC2 signaling as the likely mechanism.
Supplements
Fish oil supplements improve memory function
Rhode Island Hospital researchers found that older adults in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative who used fish oil supplements showed significantly slower cognitive decline and less brain atrophy. The retrospective study covered 819 participants.
