Korean mistletoe extract helps type 1 diabetes mellitus
Korean mistletoe extract raised insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells without toxicity and lowered blood glucose in chemically induced diabetic mice. The researchers suggest it could serve as a source for developing type 1 diabetes treatments.

Novel weight loss treatment tested
In obese rats, capsaicin-chitosan microspheres controlled body weight, body fat and serum lipids better than chitosan, capsaicin or Orlistat alone, researchers report in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. They call the combination a possible weight-loss substance.
Supplements
Plant phospholipid/lipid conjugate may prevent lung cancer
In a Carcinogenesis study, National Cancer Institute researchers gave a plant phospholipid/lipid conjugate to mice carrying an aggressive Lewis lung cancer model and saw growth fall 30 percent, with less angiogenesis and more apoptosis. They propose it as a possible chemopreventive supplement.

Low adiponectin means high breast cancer risk
A meta-analysis of 15 observational studies covering 4,249 breast cancer cases found women with the highest circulating adiponectin were 34% less likely to be diagnosed, with each 3 microgram/ml increase linked to a 5% lower risk. Low adiponectin often accompanies high body fat.
Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acids prevent arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women
In rats whose ovaries had been removed, omega-3 supplementation at 0.8 g/kg a day prevented the rises in arterial stiffness, blood pressure, body weight and aortic thickness seen after surgery. The Italian-led study appeared in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
Supplements
Curcumin may ease "side effects" of high fat diet
In LDL receptor-deficient mice, curcumin at 500 to 1,500 mg per kg of diet cut uptake of oxidized LDL, slowed weight and body fat gain and, at the high dose, suppressed steatohepatosis and reduced fibrotic liver tissue, Tufts researchers report in Atherosclerosis.
Supplements
Something about Garcinia Cambogia – weight loss supplement
A rundown of garcinia cambogia's search popularity and safety. A 2012 review in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine suggested 2,800 mg a day should be safe, and the writer urges caution with high hydroxycitric acid products.
Supplements
L-Arginine reduces central obesity
Twenty obese women aged 18 to 40 took 3 grams of L-arginine three times a day for 12 weeks alongside lifestyle counselling. Waist circumference fell from 115.6 cm to 109.2 cm and weight from 98.6 kg to 95.7 kg.
Supplements
Omge-3 fatty acids plus alpha lipoic acid slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease
A 12-month trial split 39 people with Alzheimer's into placebo, omega-3, and omega-3 plus alpha-lipoic acid groups. The authors report some evidence the combination slowed progression, though the oxidative stress marker F2-isoprostane, ADAS-cog and ADL showed no significant differences.
Supplements
Saffron helps many medical conditions
A review in Drug Research collects trials of saffron against depression, Alzheimer's, itching, weight gain and premenstrual symptoms. Eight trials found saffron extract beat placebo for depression and worked about as well as some antidepressant drugs.

Vitamin D plus calcium supplement prevents hip fracture - review
A Cochrane review of 53 trials with nearly 100,000 participants found vitamin D taken with calcium cut hip fracture risk about 16 percent in older adults, while vitamin D alone, in the formats and doses tested, appeared ineffective against hip or any new fracture.
Supplements
Maca root extract helps erectile dysfunction
In a 12-week trial, 50 men with mild erectile dysfunction took 2,400 mg of Maca dry extract or placebo. Both groups improved on the IIEF-5 score, but the Maca group improved significantly more and was alone in gaining on physical and social performance measures.
Supplements
Eicosapentaenoic acid may prevent prostate cancer
Among 48 men with untreated low-risk prostate cancer, higher levels of the omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid measured in prostate tissue were associated with lower risk of progression, which occurred in 29 percent of the men at repeat biopsy. The authors call this an interim analysis.
Supplements
Phentermine plus fenfluramine offer better weight loss effect
In a 24-week double-blind trial of 81 obese people, those taking phentermine with fenfluramine lost 8.4 kg, against 4.4 kg on placebo, 7.5 kg on fenfluramine alone and 10 kg on phentermine alone. The combination group reported fewer adverse effects than those on a single drug.
Supplements
Goji berry or wolfberry helps fight influenza
In aged mice, adding 5 percent goji berry to the diet alongside flu vaccination produced higher influenza antibody titers and less post-infection weight loss than vaccine alone. The Journal of Nutrition authors suggest wolfberry may improve vaccine efficacy in older people.
