Novel antioxidant makes old arteries seem young again, CU-Boulder study finds
University of Colorado Boulder researchers gave old mice water containing the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant MitoQ for four weeks and found their arteries worked like those of much younger mice, with endothelial function restored. The study appears in the Journal of Physiology.

Dietary Supplement Instaflex helps joint pain
In a trial of 100 adults aged 50 to 75 with chronic joint pain, those taking the supplement Instaflex for eight weeks reported a 37 percent drop in pain severity against 16 percent on placebo. Function scores fell 39 percent versus 14 percent, the FASEB Journal report says.

Dietary supplement EDiSON helps erectile dysfunction
Two small trials tested EDiSON, a blend including Panax ginseng, maca, Mucuna pruriens, L-arginine and CoQ10. No adverse events appeared in 15 healthy men, and among 14 men with mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction, IIEF-5 scores improved significantly from baseline at four and eight weeks.
Supplements
Selenium, vitamin E supplements and prostate cancer risk
In a study of 1,739 prostate cancer cases and 3,117 controls, selenium supplements raised the risk of high-grade prostate cancer by 91 percent among men who already had high selenium status. Vitamin E alone raised total risk 63 percent in men with low selenium status.

Dietary fiber lowers death risk in myocardial infarction survivors
A Circulation study drawing on the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study links higher fiber intake after a heart attack to 25% lower all-cause mortality, with cereal fiber tied to 27% lower risk and survivors who increased intake 31% less likely to die.
Supplements
Spirulina helps prevent breast cancer
Among rats exposed to the carcinogen DMBA, 13% fed a Spirulina-supplemented diet developed mammary tumors against 87% of the others. Spirulina lowered Ki-67 and estrogen-alpha expression, curbed cell proliferation and induced apoptosis within 48 hours.
Supplements
L-arginine helps weight loss
In a pilot study of 20 nondiabetic obese women who took three grams of L-arginine three times a day for 12 weeks alongside lifestyle counseling, waist circumference fell from 116 to 109 cm and participants lost an average of 6.5 pounds. No side effects were observed.
Supplements
L-Arginine helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
In diabetic rats, L-arginine supplementation preserved kidney function and improved insulin sensitivity, apparently by raising nitric oxide production, widening renal microvessels and increasing glomerular blood flow and filtration rate.
Supplements
Glucosamine helps logevity
A study in Nature Communications found glucosamine extended lifespan by 10 percent in aging mice and 5 percent in roundworms, apparently by mimicking a low-carb diet and speeding the breakdown of fatty acids and amino acids. Whether it does anything for humans remains unknown.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids prevent liver disease
A PLOS One animal study reports DHA protected against fatty liver, inflammation and fibrosis, and affected vitamin, carbohydrate, protein and amino acid metabolism as well as lipids. The dose used was equivalent to 2 to 4 grams of omega-3 a day for a person.
Supplements
Melatonin may lower prostate cancer risk
Harvard's Sarah Markt told an AACR prostate cancer conference that men with higher melatonin levels had a 75 percent lower risk of developing advanced prostate cancer than men with lower levels. She says the results need replication but support keeping a steady sleep-wake cycle.

Can fish oil help preserve brain cells? (PR)
Among 1,111 older women, those with higher red blood cell omega-3 levels had larger brain volumes eight years later; women with twice the level had 0.7 percent more total brain volume and 2.7 percent more in the hippocampus, the Neurology study reports.
Supplements
Inosine helps raise urate in Parkinson disease
A phase 2 trial in JAMA Neurology found inosine supplementation safe, tolerable and effective at raising serum urate in 75 people with early Parkinson disease. The trial did not track disease progression, though earlier work suggested higher urate may slow disability.
Supplements
Raspberry ketone based supplement helps weight loss
Of 45 obese adults who completed a diet-and-exercise trial, those also taking METABO - a supplement combining raspberry ketone, caffeine, capsaicin, garlic, ginger and Citrus aurantium - lost more fat mass and waist girth and reported more energy. No adverse events were observed.
