The FDA says OxyElite Pro, sold for weight loss and muscle growth, was recalled after being linked to acute liver failure and hepatitis, including one death and several liver transplants. It also tells people to stop using VERSA-1 from the same manufacturer.

Supplements
Spirulina supplements lower cholesterol, lead to weight loss
In a small Indian trial, 30 overweight patients with high cholesterol took 2 or 4 grams of spirulina daily or a placebo for three months. Those on spirulina lowered total, LDL and VLDL cholesterol and blood fat, raised HDL and lost weight, the researchers report.
Supplements
Spirulina supplements improve anemia, immune dysfunction in senior citizens
In a small 12-week trial of 40 people aged 50 and older, spirulina raised mean corpuscular hemoglobin and markers of immune function, with women more responsive. The authors say it may ameliorate anemia and immunosenescence and call for large randomized trials.
Supplements
Antioxidants alpha-tocopherol, vitamin C, ginkgo biloba help Alzheimer's disease
A survey of the evidence that high intakes of vitamin E as alpha-tocopherol and vitamin C may help prevent Alzheimer's disease, and that Ginkgo biloba may improve cognition in moderate cases, alongside the oxidative stress hypothesis that antioxidant therapy rests on.
Supplements
Amino acid supplement cuts muscle loss in knee replacements (PR)
In a University of Oregon study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, 16 knee-replacement patients averaging age 69 took 20 grams of essential amino acids twice daily for a week before and two weeks after surgery, and lost far less quadriceps muscle than 12 placebo controls.
Supplements
MSG neurotoxicity can be reduced by PQQ
A study in Genetics and Molecular Research found that co-treatment with the coenzyme PQQ protected rat cortical neurons from glutamate-induced apoptosis, supporting its antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. The piece also notes earlier work on vitamin C and MSG liver injury.
Supplements
Prenatal myo-inositol supplements may cut gestational diabetes mellitus risk
In a randomized trial, 110 pregnant women with a family history of type 2 diabetes took myo-inositol with folic acid from the end of the first trimester; 6% developed gestational diabetes versus 15.3% of controls. Fetal macrosomia also fell.
Supplements
Chlorella helps Alzheimer's disease
In senior Japanese subjects, one to two months of 8 grams of chlorella daily raised blood and red-cell lutein and lowered phospholipid hydroperoxide. The researchers say the reductions "might contribute" to normal erythrocyte function and to preventing senile dementia.
Supplements
L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 reduce toxicity of statins
In muscle tissue, a low dose of simvastatin inhibited mitochondrial respiration, doubled hydrogen peroxide production and cut coenzyme Q10 by 44 percent; adding L-carnitine, mevalonate or CoQ10 abolished those effects, Brazilian researchers report in Frontiers in Physiology.
Supplements
Dietary supplement reduces cardiovascular damage induced by type 2 diabetes mellitus
In rats with induced cardiovascular damage, 200 mg/kg of the supplement Kalpaamruthaa daily for four weeks improved insulin resistance, lowered elevated lipids and raised antioxidant activity. The authors tie the effect to reduced oxidative stress and PKC-beta/Akt signaling.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids help children with ADHD
A Journal of Attention Disorders study reports that omega-3 supplements containing DHA and EPA were associated with better spelling and attention and less oppositional behavior, hyperactivity and inattention in children with ADHD.
Supplements
Selenium reduces cancer risk, mortality in skin cancer patients
In a trial of 1,312 patients with a history of skin cancer, 200 mcg of selenium daily cut all-cause mortality 17%, total cancer deaths 50% and total cancer incidence 37%. It did not reduce new basal or squamous cell carcinomas.
Supplements
Mental health news: Omega 3 fat, alpha lipoic acid help Alzheimer's disease
A 12-month pilot trial randomized 39 Alzheimer's patients to placebo, omega-3 fatty acids, or omega-3 plus alpha lipoic acid; 87 percent finished. Levels of the oxidative stress marker F2-isoprostane were similar across groups. The researchers report both supplement arms helped in some respects.
Supplements
L-Arginine improves glucose tolerance in diabetes mellitus
Oral L-arginine raised plasma GLP-1 and insulin and sharply improved glucose clearance in lean and obese mice, with no effect in mice lacking the GLP-1 receptor. The authors call it an intriguing possibility that L-arginine might aid glucose tolerance in obese people.
Supplements
Lutein supplements extend your lifespan
Chinese researchers report in Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics that fruit flies fed 0.1 mg of lutein per millilitre lived a mean 54.6 days instead of 49.0, with less malonyldialdehyde and more antioxidant enzyme activity. The effect has not been confirmed in humans.
Supplements
Alginate your next weight loss dietary supplement
A Food Chemistry study from Newcastle University found alginate, derived from seaweed, inhibited pancreatic lipase by up to 72 percent with a synthetic substrate and 58 percent with a natural one. High-G alginate was the stronger inhibitor, pointing to less dietary fat being absorbed.
Supplements
Curcumin prevents fatty liver
In a laboratory study, curcumin suppressed oleic acid-induced fat accumulation in liver cells and lowered triglycerides and total cholesterol. The researchers say it cut hepatic lipogenesis, which they read as a possible route to preventing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Supplements
Cysteine, glycine supplementation corrects glutathione deficiency
In a Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism study, eight older HIV-infected men with glutathione deficiency took the precursors cysteine and glycine by mouth for 14 days and had their glutathione levels restored or improved.
