Taiwanese researchers report that Selaginella tamariscina extract cut the invasion and motility of lung cancer cells in the lab and curbed tumor growth and spread in mice, lowering matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9. They call it a candidate antimetastatic agent against lung cancer.

Antioxidants N-acetylcysteine, procysteine prevent alcohol-induced ciliary dysfunction
Mice drinking 20% alcohol for six weeks lost ciliary function, but those also fed N-acetylcysteine or procysteine kept it, a study in Alcohol reports. Neither supplement restored nitric oxide levels in lavage fluid. The authors say the results support testing antioxidants in heavy drinkers.
Supplements
Creatine supplementation helps knee osteoarthritis
In a small randomized, double-blind trial, postmenopausal women with knee osteoarthritis doing resistance training who took creatine improved in physical function, stiffness, lower-limb lean mass and quality of life, while the placebo group showed no significant change.
Supplements
Creatine supplements help patients fibromyalgia
In a 16-week randomized, double-blind trial reported in Arthritis Care and Research, fibromyalgia patients who took creatine gained muscle phosphorylcreatine and strength in the leg and chest press. Creatine did not change pain, sleep, cognition or quality of life.
Supplements
Vitamin E, vitamin C help traumatic brain injury
Rats given 45 or 60 mg/kg of ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol or both for two weeks before and after brain injury showed restored vitamin and superoxide dismutase levels and less malondialdehyde. The authors report the treatment cut oxidative stress and mortality in rats.
Supplements
Guarana helps fatigue in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy
In a trial reported in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, breast cancer patients taking 50 mg of guarana twice daily after their first chemotherapy cycle improved on several fatigue measures at days 21 and 49, without added toxicity, anxiety or sleep problems.
Supplements
Melatonin helps prevent and treat breast cancer
A review in Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs suggests melatonin could reduce the oxidative stress of chemotherapy and radiotherapy for breast cancer and might serve as an adjuvant in prevention, citing its estrogen receptor and enzyme modulating properties.
Supplements
Taurine, L-arginine help diabetes and high blood pressure
Rats made insulin-resistant and hypertensive by a high-fructose diet had normal blood pressure, glucose and insulin after four weeks on taurine and L-arginine, researchers report. A mix of 1.5 percent of each in drinking water worked best, and vessel thickening reversed.
Supplements
Diabetic retinopathy benefits from dietary supplements
In streptozotocin-diabetic rats, ten days of a fortified extract of red berries, Ginkgo biloba and white willow bark containing carnosine and alpha-lipoic acid lowered retinal TNF and VEGF and curbed plasma lipid peroxidation, the authors report.
Supplements
Gallic acid may protect you in a nuclear war or nuclear accident
Rodents given 100 mg of gallic acid per kilogram of body weight an hour before gamma-radiation showed less DNA damage, more DNA repair and better survival, the researchers report. At high doses, 20% of supplemented animals survived while unsupplemented irradiated animals died.
Supplements
Panax notoginseng may alleviate angina pectoris
A review of 17 randomized trials covering 1,747 participants found oral Panax notoginseng preparations did not prevent cardiovascular events, but may ease angina pectoris, improve electrocardiogram readings and reduce angina recurrence, duration and nitroglycerin dosage.
Supplements
Artichoke leaf extract lowers cholesterol
A Cochrane Library review by Barbara Wider of the University of Exeter Medical School and colleagues reports some evidence that artichoke leaf extract can lower cholesterol by up to 18 percent after weeks of supplementation. Other supplements named include red yeast rice, spirulina and green tea.
Supplements
Creatine helps improve muscle function, bone health
A roundup of creatine research: 16 non-elite swimmers taking creatine held their speed better and saw smaller heart rate rises across repeated 50-meter sprints, and an Endocrine meta-analysis found creatine plus resistance training improved muscle and bone mass and strength.
Supplements
Oleanolic acid, ursolic acid suppress hepatitis C virus replication
Oleanolic acid and ursolic acid, isolated from the Chinese herb Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, suppressed hepatitis C virus replication in laboratory tests and inhibited the viral NS5B polymerase. The researchers propose them as candidates for clinical trials.
Supplements
Whey protein isolate may help prevent obesity in children
Male mice fed a high-fat diet with whey protein instead of casein gained weight more slowly over the first four weeks and ended up 15% lighter, with lower fasting insulin and cholesterol and better glucose clearance, a PLoS One study found. Gut flora differed by diet fat level, not protein type.
Supplements
Acai berry extract may prevent Alzheimer's disease?
Acai berry extract protected rat PC12 cells from beta-amyloid and helped them keep normal shape, which researchers say suggests the extract may guard against the amyloid damage that marks Alzheimer's disease. The work was done in cultured cells, not in people.
Supplements
The Hormone Men Shouldn't Take, Even Though It's Become Quite Common
Dr. Mercola warns against synthetic testosterone replacement for the decline that begins around age 30, citing research that tied testosterone use to a 29 percent higher risk of an adverse event regardless of coronary heart disease, and favors diet and exercise changes instead.
Supplements
Whey protein isolate helps psoriasis
Six psoriasis patients took 20 grams a day of nondenatured whey protein isolate for three months, and their psoriasis area and severity improved. The researchers link the effect to earlier work showing whey raises circulating glutathione.
