Mexican herbal supplement helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
A study in BioMed Research International found that aqueous extract of Annona macroprophyllata, used in Mexico for type 2 diabetes, inhibits alpha-glucosidase, the intestinal enzyme that frees glucose from starch. Existing drugs hitting that target often cause bloating, flatulence and diarrhea.

Indole-3-carbinol helps prevent cervical cancer
In transgenic mice prone to cervical cancer under chronic estrogen exposure, 19 of 25 on a control diet developed cervical-vaginal cancer versus 2 of 24 fed a diet with 0.2% indole-3-carbinol, a compound in cruciferous vegetables, according to a study in Cancer Research.

Lipoic acid helps cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease
In a trial of 126 Alzheimer's patients reported in the Journal of Neurodegenerative Diseases, 600 mg of lipoic acid a day improved MMSE scores in 43 percent of those taking it against 23 percent of controls, with better scores on other measures as well.

In rats with diabetes, Panax ginseng extract restored impaired vasorelaxation and lowered triglycerides but not cholesterol, Hong Kong researchers report. The extract also suppressed atherosclerosis-related genes and changed the expression of genes involved in lipids.
Supplements

Ik-Hyun Cho's review in Journal of Ginseng Research gathers evidence that Panax ginseng and its ginsenosides may help prevent and treat neurodegenerative disease, with the strongest case made for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

A review in the Journal of Biomedical Research lists more than a dozen dietary supplements the Korean Food and Drug Administration has approved for type 2 diabetes, among them banaba extract, pinitol, guava extract, nopal extract and yam extract, with a daily dose for each.
Supplements
Curcumin, L-arginine and Vitamin E help diabetic foot ulcers
A review in SkinMed found animal-study evidence that curcumin, L-arginine and vitamin E supplements can aid wound healing in people with type 2 diabetes. The review puts foot ulcers, caused by impaired nerve sensation, at about 30 percent of people with diabetes over 40.

Calcium supplements pose no cardiovascular risk
A study in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research followed 1,103 older women and found three years of calcium supplements at 1.2 grams a day made no difference to carotid artery wall thickness or carotid atherosclerosis, countering claims that supplemental calcium harms the heart.

Chitosan benefits: It helps weight loss
Two feeding experiments in pigs found 1,200 ppm chitosan the most effective dose: it cut crude fat digestibility, lowered feed intake and weight gain from day 35 to 57, raised serum leptin and lowered C-reactive protein. The trials were run in pigs, not in people.
Supplements
Tryptophan, serotonin help anorexia nervosa, anxiety, depression
French researchers compared 42 patients with anorexia nervosa to 42 people without it and found serotonin markers significantly lower in the patients. A rise in the tryptophan ratio tracked with less severe depressive symptoms, suggesting supplementation may help.

Tryptophan dosage: How much L-Tryptophan can you take?
In a randomized, double-blind crossover trial of 17 healthy Japanese women, doses up to 5 g a day of L-tryptophan for 21 days produced no adverse effects on food intake, body weight, or blood and urine biomarkers, the Journal of Nutrition reports.

Korean red ginseng extract protects against radiation induced damage
Chang's team tested Korean red ginseng extract in human HaCaT keratinocytes and a zebrafish model and found it protected against a range of radiation-induced damage. The piece cautions that such antioxidants may also blunt radiotherapy, so patients should consult their oncologists.
Supplements
Collagen hydrolysate good for skin health
In a 12-week trial of 32 volunteers, 3 grams of collagen hydrolysate daily improved skin elasticity and transepidermal water loss, while 500 mg of vitamin C alone did not and adding it gave no extra benefit. The authors say collagen peptides may improve skin hydration and elasticity.
