A 2016 review in Sexual Medicine Reviews reports that testosterone therapy eased hypogonadism symptoms and improved quality of life in men treated for non-high-risk prostate cancer, with studies finding no increase in recurrence. Evidence for high-risk disease is less clear.

Chaga mushroom extract suppresses Lewis lung cancer
In mouse models of Lewis lung carcinoma, Chaga mushroom extract given at 6 mg/kg/day for three weeks cut tumor size by 50 percent and metastatic nodules by 25 percent compared with controls, suggesting a possible role in treating lung cancer and limiting spread.
Supplements
Ascorbic acid, lysine, proline and green tea extract helps ovarian cancer
In a mouse study, all 12 animals on a normal diet developed ovarian cancer, while five of six fed a mix of ascorbic acid, lysine, proline and green tea extract did not. In vitro, 250 ug/ml of the mix fully blocked MMP-9 expression and inhibited invasion in A-2780 cells.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids help major depression
A 2016 trial of 122 patients with major depression found that high baseline red blood cell levels of EPA and DHA predicted better outcomes in patients receiving omega-3 supplements. The trial did not set out to determine the optimal dose or duration.
Supplements
Folate supplements cause gestational diabetes mellitus
In a cohort study of 3,474 pregnant women in Anhui, China, those who took folic acid daily in the first trimester were 120 percent more likely to develop gestational diabetes than non-users; women who were also overweight or obese beforehand were 463 percent more likely.
Supplements
Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements prevent colorectal cancer
A Harvard study drawing on the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study found taking glucosamine with chondroitin was linked to about 23% lower colorectal cancer risk, while glucosamine alone was not. How the supplements might protect is unknown.
Supplements
Oleanolic Acid Can be Another Cancer Treatment
A study in Cell Biochemistry and Biophysics reports that high salt-induced osmotic stress boosted cancer cell growth and aerobic glycolysis, and that oleanolic acid, found in olive oil and garlic, offset the rise in glycolytic enzymes and cut cell proliferation.
Supplements
Ketone supplements help fight cancer
Researchers fed healthy rats ketone supplements for one to four months and saw blood ketones reach therapeutic levels, glucose drop 20%, carnosine rise fourfold and several inflammatory markers fall. The authors say the short-term changes suggest protection against cancer.

Research Shows GanedenBC30 Probiotics Improve Digestion of Plant Proteins
Ganeden reports that research by Koen Venema at Maastricht University found its GanedenBC30 probiotic strain increased digestibility of pea, rice and soy protein, following an earlier study on animal-based protein. The company ties the findings to demand for vegan and sports nutrition products.
Supplements
DHA prevents liver cancer
A 2015 Advances in Nutrition paper reports that in mice prone to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis on a Western diet, the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA altered liver metabolism and reversed diet-induced oxidative stress and fibrosis, which the authors say may lower liver cancer risk.
Supplements
Chenpi extract prevents diabetes mellitus, obesity
Rutgers researchers fed obesity-prone mice a high-fat diet with 0.25% or 0.5% chenpi extract for 15 weeks; those mice escaped the obesity, fatty liver and diabetic symptoms seen on the diet alone. The effect tracked with AMPK activation in fat tissue.
Supplements
Potassium/magnesium citrate prevents kidney stones
A Journal of Urology trial gave 20 subjects potassium-magnesium citrate or placebo through five weeks of strict bed rest, a known stone risk. The treated group showed lower calcium oxalate saturation and less undissociated uric acid; the report gives no stone counts for either group.
Supplements
CoQ10 may help cognitive decline in postmenopausal women
Female mice showed marked cognitive decline four weeks after their ovaries were removed, along with weakened mitochondrial enzyme activity and higher oxidative stress. Oral CoQ10 at 10 mg per kg for four weeks reversed those deficits in this surgically induced model of menopause.
Supplements
L-arginine may help breast cancer
A BMC Cancer study found that L-arginine supplementation slowed tumor growth, prolonged survival and cut myeloid-derived suppressor cells in mice with mammary tumors, which the authors attribute to stronger innate and adaptive immune responses. The work was done in rodents, not people.
Supplements
Mistletoe extracts may be used to treat various cancers
A case report in the Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases describes a 78-year-old man whose inoperable high-grade dysplasia colon adenoma disappeared eight months after two injections of Viscum album (European mistletoe) extract into the tumor.
Supplements
Curcumin may fight ovarian cancer
A Cancer Letters study by South Korean researchers reports that curcumin raised cytosolic calcium by inhibiting SERCA activity, triggering apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells but not normal cells, with the effect depending on dose and time.
Supplements
CoQ10 may fight high blood pressure
A Florida State University review of three trials found CoQ10 at 100 to 120 mg a day lowered systolic blood pressure by about 10 mmHg and diastolic by 6.6 mmHg versus placebo. The authors still decline to recommend it as an antihypertensive, citing possible bias in those studies.

Food News: Ganeden Earns Non-GMO Project Verification on Probiotic Ingredient
Ganeden's probiotic ingredient BC30 earned Non-GMO Project Verification after third-party evaluation. The company says the strain is also certified kosher, halal, gluten free and allergen free, and was the first spore-forming probiotic to receive GRAS status from FDA.
