Drawing on the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, researchers report in the International Journal of Cancer that taking glucosamine or chondroitin was associated with about 23% lower colorectal cancer risk. How they might help is unclear.

Essiac tea may help treat prostate cancer
A case report in the Canadian Journal of Urology describes a 64-year-old man whose hormone-refractory prostate cancer responded well to Essiac tea. Research on the herbal tea is mixed, with some studies finding no anticancer effect.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids fight breast cancer
In a 1993 study, mice carrying human breast cancer cells ate diets with rising proportions of menhaden fish oil in place of corn oil. Tumors grew fastest and spread to the lungs most on the highest corn oil diet, suggesting omega-3s may suppress growth and spread while omega-6s promote it.

Bromelain and N-acetylcysteine help gastric cancer?
A bare citation to a 2014 Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research paper by Amini, Masoumi-Moghaddam and colleagues on bromelain and N-acetylcysteine inhibiting gastrointestinal cancer cell proliferation and survival in vitro.

Could aged black garlic extract prevent colon cancer?
A citation for a 2014 Biomedical Reports paper reporting that aged black garlic extract inhibited the growth of HT29 colon cancer cells through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.
Supplements
Aged garlic extract helps colds and flu
In a randomized trial of 120 adults, 2.56 grams a day of aged garlic extract through the cold and flu season did not reduce how often people got sick, but those who did had less severe symptoms. Two types of immune cells also proliferated more readily by day 45.
Supplements
Hops may help prevent breast cancer
In lab tests, an enriched hops extract and its compound 6-prenylnaringenin pushed estrogen metabolism in breast cells toward a detoxification pathway tied to lower cancer risk. The authors caution that a related hops compound, 8-prenylnaringenin, acts as a strong estrogen on breast cancer cells.
Supplements
DHA, EPA protect against NAFLD
Mice on an atherogenic high-fat diet developed less severe fatty liver disease when fed EPA or DHA. EPA cut liver triacylglycerol more effectively, while DHA better prevented inflammation and oxidative stress. The authors conclude both could treat NAFLD and NASH.
Supplements
Free radical scavengers reduce radiation-induced DNA damage
Ionizing radiation generates reactive oxygen species that damage DNA. A 2001 study found scavengers such as DMSO, glycerol or cysteamine present during exposure helped protect DNA and improve cell survival. The article's extension to antioxidant supplements is theoretical.
Supplements
Trehalose good for artery function
In a University of Colorado Boulder trial, adults aged 50 to 77 who ate 100 grams of trehalose a day for 12 weeks improved resistance artery endothelial function by about 30 percent, but only among participants whose weight changed by no more than five pounds.

Red yeast rice supplement acts like statins
In a 12-week double-blind trial in India of 191 untreated patients newly diagnosed with hyperlipidemia, a supplement combining red yeast rice, grape seed, niacinamide and folic acid cut LDL cholesterol by 29.4%, against 3.5% on placebo.
Supplements
L-carnitine, L-arginine and niacin help erectile dysfunction
In a 2012 trial of a supplement combining propionyl-L-carnitine, L-arginine and niacin, men with erectile dysfunction saw a small but significant improvement after three months. Up to 40% had better erections and 77% partially responded, the authors report.
Supplements
Testosterone supplements help erectile dysfunction
A meta-analysis of 41 of 1,702 reports found testosterone supplementation improved erectile function and other aspects of sexual response in hypogonadal men, and may add to PDE5 inhibitors. The authors caution that only industry-sponsored trials still showed effects after weighing bias.

Nutrition supplement lowers death risk in hospitalized patients
In an Abbott-supported trial of 652 malnourished patients aged 65 and older hospitalized with heart or lung disease, those given a high-protein supplement with HMB and vitamin D were 50 percent less likely to die within 90 days of discharge. Readmission rates did not differ.
Supplements
Red grape seed extract helps hyperlipidemia
In a trial of 70 patients with mild to moderate hyperlipidemia, eight weeks of red grape seed extract at 200 mg a day lowered triglycerides, LDL and total cholesterol while raising HDL, apolipoprotein AI and paraoxonase activity.

Many natural weight loss pills are adulterated with drugs
Researchers testing 160 “100% natural” weight loss supplements bought online found 56% contained at least one of six prescription drug ingredients, most often sibutramine and phenolphthalein. Some drugs detected were withdrawn years ago because of toxicity.
