Labdoor tested 36 best-selling magnesium supplements and found only about half within 5% of their label claims, with measured content ranging from 38.1 mg to 691.2 mg per serving. More than half exceeded the 350 mg upper intake limit, and two in three were projected to exceed an arsenic limit.

Omega 3 fatty acids EPA, DHA help depression
In a secondary analysis of a placebo-controlled trial, depressed patients who remitted after EPA and DHA supplementation carried higher red blood cell levels of both fatty acids than those who did not. Everyone took sertraline; only the treatment group received 930 mg EPA and 750 mg DHA daily.
Supplements
Fish oil helps nonsmall cell lung cancer
In a study in Cancer, advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients who took 2.5 g of EPA plus DHA daily alongside chemotherapy had a 60% response rate against 26% for controls, and 60% one-year survival against 39%. The supplements appeared safe.

GABA fights fluoride induced hypothyroidism
Male mice given subacute sodium fluoride injections showed lower T4, T3 and thyroid hormone-binding globulin plus abnormal thyroid follicles. Mice also treated with GABA showed less metabolic toxicity and largely normalized thyroid structure, in what the authors call a first.
Supplements
Vitamin C helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a randomized controlled study, people with type 2 diabetes who took 0.5 g of vitamin C twice daily for four months improved skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity and oxidative stress measures, leading the authors to call it a possible inexpensive adjunct for insulin resistance.
Supplements
Pyridoxamine neutralizes the neurotoxicity of fructose
University of Turin researchers fed mice a 60% fructose diet for 12 weeks and saw the glycation product CML build up in the hippocampus alongside oxidative stress and early signs of neurodegeneration. The supplement pyridoxamine prevented those changes in the animals.
Supplements
Tocotrienols prevent Alzheimer's disease
A Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry report says high intake and high serum levels of tocotrienols, but not ordinary tocopherols, have been consistently linked to lower Alzheimer's incidence, and points to their clearance of FPP and GGPP and their anti-inflammatory activity.

Calcium cuts death risk from cardiovascular disease in women
Among 132,823 adults followed 17 years in the Cancer Prevention Study II cohort, women taking supplemental calcium had 7 to 16 percent lower all-cause mortality, while men taking over 1,000 mg a day had higher death risk. The authors note the study is observational, not a trial.
Supplements
Green tea, green tea extract prevent fructose induced renal damage
Rats drinking 10 percent fructose water for eight weeks developed mild proteinuria and renal cortex fibrosis, but rats whose diet also supplied 20 mg/kg of epicatechin daily escaped or reduced that damage, implying green tea extract may blunt fructose-driven kidney injury.
Supplements
Fish oil cuts risk of death from cardiovascular disease
A review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found fish, fish oil and marine omega-3s tied to lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality across most trials and cohorts, while plant-derived alpha-linolenic acid was not. The benefit was absent in defibrillator patients.
Supplements
Hesperidin plus calcium supplement prevents bone loss in postmenopausal women
In a small trial of 12 healthy postmenopausal women, a supplement combining calcium and hesperidin improved bone calcium retention by 5.5%, Purdue's Connie Weaver and colleagues report in JCEM. Hesperidin alone did not prevent bone loss in the subjects.
Supplements
B vitamins plus omega-3 fatty acids effective against cognitive decline
In a two-year trial of 266 people aged 70 and older with mild cognitive impairment, B vitamins improved global cognition, dementia rating and verbal recall only among those with high blood omega-3 levels. DHA drove the effect; omega-3s alone did not help.
Supplements
Vitamin C helps diabetes mellitus type 2
Pooling five randomized trials, a review found vitamin C supplements lowered fasting blood sugar by an average of 21 mg/dL in people with diabetes mellitus, but had no effect on glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c).
Supplements
Magnesium supplements help diabetes mellitus patients
In a 120-patient trial, fasting blood sugar among type 2 diabetes patients taking oral magnesium fell from an average 144 to 129 mg/dL over 16 weeks, compared with 145 to 134 mg/dL in the placebo group.

Media Hype and Deceptive Garcinia Cambogia Products
Chemical testing found that most top-rated garcinia cambogia products barely contain the supplement itself. The piece traces the flood of scam products to Dr. Oz promoting the fruit as a "revolutionary fat buster," which drove a million searches a month in late 2014.

The Benefits of Prenatal Vitamins for Mom and Baby
A LabDoor item promoting an infographic on prenatal vitamins, noting that one in nine U.S. babies is born pre-term and that the Public Health Service recommends 400 micrograms of folic acid daily for women capable of becoming pregnant, plus adequate iron and calcium.

DHA helps sickle cell disease
Mice with sickle cell disease fed a diet with 3 percent DHA for eight weeks had less stiff, more deformable red blood cells and 40 percent fewer irreversibly sickled cells. The authors suggest DHA may have potential as a treatment for people with the disease.
