A New England Journal of Medicine study of 12,513 Italians in the Risk and Prevention Study found that after five years, omega-3 supplements did not lower death or hospitalization from heart disease compared with placebo, consistent with two 2012 reviews.

Breast Cancer News: Quercetin may help treat breast cancer effectively
Researchers tested nine phytochemicals for binding to NF-kappaB precursor protein p105, which is over-expressed in breast cancer, and found quercetin and 1-caffeoylquinic acid bound most strongly, followed by guggulsterone. The work measured binding affinity, not treatment in patients.
Supplements
Grape seed extract fights obesity
Mice on a high-fat diet given grape seed extract gained less weight and carried less epididymal and back fat than mice on the same diet without it, and had lower blood lipids and higher HDL cholesterol. The authors attribute the effect to altered lipid metabolism.
Supplements
Myo-Inositol helps prevent gestational diabetes mellitus
Among 220 pregnant women with a parent who had type 2 diabetes, 6% of those taking myo-inositol with folic acid developed gestational diabetes versus 15.3% on folic acid alone, a 65% reduction, with less fetal macrosomia, a Diabetes Care trial found.
Supplements
Red grape seed extract lowers cholesterol
In a crossover trial, 52 people with mild hyperlipidemia took 200 mg of red grape seed extract daily for eight weeks. Total cholesterol, LDL, oxidized LDL, triglycerides and VLDL fell while HDL rose, suggesting a possible reduction in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk.
Supplements
MSM helps osteoarthritis - new study confirms
MSM supplementation for 13 weeks reduced knee cartilage degeneration in adult mice with osteoarthritis, but the highest dose left young rats with smaller bodies, livers and spleens, leading the Japanese authors to caution against use by children and adolescents.
Supplements
Dietary fiber cuts stroke risk
A meta-analysis of eight cohort studies, published in Stroke, found total dietary fiber intake inversely associated with first stroke: seven grams a day was linked to 7 percent lower risk. Soluble fiber showed no significant link, and the cohort design cannot establish cause.
Supplements
Curcumin prevents skin cancer
Mice given curcumin by mouth or on the skin for 14 days developed fewer skin tumors, and developed them later, than untreated mice after 24 weeks of UVB exposure. The study used 22 mice, and the authors say more research is needed to confirm any effect in people.
Supplements
Melatonin may help type 2 diabetes
A JAMA case-control study of 370 women with type 2 diabetes and 370 controls in the Nurses' Health Study found lower melatonin secretion independently associated with higher diabetes risk; women with the lowest ratios were 117 percent more likely to be diagnosed than those with the highest.

Watermelon supplement improves arterial stiffness in obese postmenopausal women
Twelve obese postmenopausal women took a watermelon-derived L-citrulline and L-arginine supplement or a placebo for six weeks in a crossover trial. The supplement lowered brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, a measure of arterial stiffness, by 1.2 m/s and aortic systolic pressure by 10 mm Hg.
Supplements
Curcumin prevents obesity, diabetes and fatty liver
In rats fed a high-fat diet, curcumin at 100 and 400 mg/kg a day lowered liver triglycerides and serum fetuin-A, a protein tied to visceral obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and fatty liver. An earlier Indian study gave 6 grams a day to people with pre-diabetes.
Supplements
MSM supplement helps knee osteoarthritis
In a 12-week randomized trial of 50 adults with knee osteoarthritis, 3 grams of MSM twice a day reduced WOMAC pain and physical function impairment and improved daily living scores, though stiffness and total symptom scores did not change.
Supplements
Dietary fiber helps prevent breast cancer
Drawing on EPIC data covering about 220,000 women and 11,576 invasive breast cancers, researchers found those eating the most total fiber were 5% less likely to be diagnosed, and 10% less for vegetable fiber. Fruit, cereal and legume fiber showed no association.
Supplements
Spirulina helps type 2 diabetes mellitus -updated
Twenty-five people with type 2 diabetes took 2 grams of spirulina or a placebo daily for two months. Those on spirulina had lower fasting and post-meal glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, and higher HDL, a Journal of Medicinal Food study reports.
Supplements
Taurine supplements may cut coronary heart disease risk
Among 223 coronary heart disease cases and 223 matched controls from the NYU Women's Health Study, serum taurine showed no significant link to risk overall. After adjustment, women in the highest tertile were 34 percent less likely to develop the disease.
Supplements
Choline, betaine reduce lung cancer risk in smokers
A case-control study of 2,821 lung cancer cases and 2,923 controls in PLOS ONE tied the highest betaine intake to 30 percent lower risk among former smokers and 49 percent lower among current smokers. No such link appeared in never-smokers, and choline showed a weaker effect.
Supplements
The Most Powerful Nutrient Ever Discovered for Eye Health
Mercola profiles astaxanthin, a carotenoid made by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, citing claims that it scavenges free radicals 65 times more effectively than vitamin C and quenches singlet oxygen 550 times more effectively than vitamin E.
Supplements
Dietary supplement lowers bad cholesterol
In a 16-week trial, 39 people with moderate hypercholesterolemia took either a placebo or a supplement combining red yeast rice, sugar cane policosanols and artichoke leaf extract. The supplement group cut LDL cholesterol 21.4 percent and total cholesterol 14.1 percent from baseline.
