Mice given Lactobacillus plantarum CCFM8610 before or after a dose of cadmium chloride absorbed less cadmium, stored less in tissue and showed less kidney and liver oxidative stress than mice given cadmium alone. Live probiotics given after exposure protected most, the researchers report.

Supplements
Actinidia polygama extract prevents obesity
Mice on a high-fat diet supplemented with Actinidia polygama (silver vine) extract had lower body weight, fat mass, serum triglycerides and leptin, and smaller fat cells, than mice on the high-fat diet alone, though both groups ate similar amounts.
Supplements
Whey Protein Supplementation Linked to Acne among Bodybuilders
T. Simonart reported in Dermatology five cases of healthy men who developed acne after taking whey protein, noting that milk and dairy products enhance insulin/IGF-1 signaling and aggravate acne. Bodybuilders with acne may want to cut their daily whey intake.
Supplements
Fish oil prevents sudden cardiac death, mercury cuts the benefit
Among 1,857 Finnish men followed for about 20 years, the highest serum omega-3 levels came with 46% lower risk of sudden cardiac death, but the benefit appeared only in men with low hair mercury. Where mercury was high, omega-3 levels no longer helped.
Supplements
Weekly prenatal iron supplements good for non-anemic women with iron deficiency
Both weekly and daily iron-folate supplements prevented anemia in 100 non-anemic Mexican pregnant women, but daily dosing raised oxidative stress and serum iron, leading the Reproductive Toxicology authors to conclude weekly supplementation appears safer.
Supplements
Men on high fat diet should use selenium supplements
In male mice, a high-fat diet for 75 days worsened lipid profiles, lowered testosterone, reduced semen quality and damaged seminiferous tubules. Adding inorganic selenium, selenium-enriched probiotics or ordinary probiotics reduced those effects.
Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acid EPA may help fight pancreatic cancer
EPA and DHA triggered reactive oxygen species build-up and caspase-8-dependent death in human pancreatic cancer cells, and mice fed a 5 percent fish oil diet showed strongly suppressed tumor growth. EPA also induced autophagy, which may blunt its ability to kill the cells.
Supplements
Vitamin C, E reduce DNA damage induced by breast cancer chemotherapy
In a five-month randomized study, stage II breast cancer patients took 5,000 mg of vitamin C and 400 mg of vitamin E alongside chemotherapy. The researchers report that the vitamins reduced treatment-induced DNA damage and restored normal antioxidant status.
Supplements
Antioxidant nutraceuticals help fight rheumatoid arthritis
A Toxicology and Industrial Health review reports that foods with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components, among them fish oil, primrose oil, black cumin, fenugreek and green tea, affected inflammatory biomarkers and oxidative stress, and may complement rheumatoid arthritis treatment.
Supplements
Green tea compound may reverse Alzheimer's disease?
Rats given a streptozotocin-induced dementia resembling Alzheimer's received green tea EGCG for four weeks in a Behavioral Brain Research study. The treatment reversed their cognitive deficit and several oxidative markers, though whether it helps humans is not established.
Supplements
Methionine, glucosamine fight adjuvant arthritis
In rats with induced adjuvant arthritis, methionine and glucosamine given together for 21 days suppressed paw swelling, synovial hyperplasia and cartilage destruction and lowered nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2. Either compound alone produced only moderate suppression.
Supplements
Lutein may help prevent hepatocellular carcinoma
In rats given the carcinogen N-nitrosodiethylamine, lutein reduced liver damage markers and tissue changes, raised glutathione and lowered gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase activity. The researchers credit its antioxidant action plus effects on cytochrome P450 and detoxifying enzymes.
Supplements
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids better cognitive performance
Forty healthy adults aged 51 to 72 took 3 grams of fish oil daily for five weeks and did better on a working memory test than on placebo, with lower plasma triacylglycerides and systolic blood pressure, a Nutrition Journal trial reports.
Supplements
The Latest Weapon in the War on Cancer: Honey Bees
University of Chicago researchers found CAPE, a component of bee propolis, slowed prostate cancer cell growth in the lab, and low oral doses cut tumour growth in mice by half. Tumours resumed growing once CAPE was withdrawn, pointing to an effect on growth signalling.
Supplements
Urtica dioica, lipoic acid possible therapeutics for diabetes mellitus?
Iranian researchers gave a stinging nettle leaf extract to male rats made insulin-resistant on a high-fructose diet and found it significantly lowered serum glucose, insulin, LDL, leptin and the fasting insulin resistance index. The work is an animal study.
Supplements
Whey protein hydrolysate helps replenish muscle glycogen after exercise
Mice fed whey protein hydrolysate for five weeks had more muscle glycogen, 4.35 mg/g, than mice fed whey amino acids at 3.15 or casein at 2.51, along with higher total glycogen synthase. The researchers say the hydrolysate may raise glycogen by increasing that enzyme's activity.
Supplements
Dietary fiber linked to low prostate cancer risk
In the North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project, men in the two higher tertiles of total fiber intake were 30% and 39% less likely to have aggressive prostate cancer than the lowest, with reductions of 56% among European Americans and 43% among African Americans.
Supplements
Whey protein concentrate good for muscle in older adults
Mobility-limited adults aged 70 to 85 who took 40 g of whey protein concentrate daily gained more lean mass, muscle area and strength than controls, though the researchers concluded the supplement added no benefit beyond resistance training itself.
