Syed Meeran's team found green tea polyphenols and sulforaphane inhibit DNA methyltransferases and histone deacetylases in ER-alpha-negative breast cancer cells, with 20 ug/mL and 5 uM optimal for reactivating ER-alpha. The work used cell cultures only.

St. John’s wort helps migraine headaches in patients receiving sodium valproate
In a trial of 100 patients aged 15 to 45 published in the Journal of Medicinal Plants Research, those given St. John's wort alongside sodium valproate saw migraine attacks drop further in intensity and frequency than those on sodium valproate alone.
Supplements
Taurine supplements may help diabetes mellitus
Rats with chronic diabetes fed a 2 percent taurine diet for 12 weeks had lower plasma glucose, better insulin sensitivity and lower triglycerides and cholesterol, but no gain in beta-cell function or islet mass. The researchers say human studies are still needed.
Supplements
Calcium supplements don't cause kidney stone in osteoporosis patients
A review of eight randomized trials and two cohort studies covering about 8,000 patients found no evidence that calcium supplements taken for osteoporosis significantly raise the risk of kidney stones or renal colic. Urinary sediment changes appeared but were judged not clinically relevant.
Supplements
Shilajit prevents Alzheimer's disease
A review in Archives of Medical Research by Carrasco-Gallardo and colleagues found lab work and one clinical trial suggesting the supplement shilajit, alone or with B-complex vitamins, improved mild Alzheimer's disease. The authors offer it as prevention, not a cure.
Supplements
Red yeast rice lowers cholesterol, prevents heart disease as effectively as statins
A review in Complementary Therapies in Medicine found red yeast rice lowered LDL and total cholesterol effectively. The product contains monacolin K, the same compound as the statin lovastatin. Trials have also tested it against heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, fatty liver and memory loss.

Lycopene Linked to Reduced Stroke Risk
Mercola reports on an analysis that followed more than 1,000 men for over 12 years and found those with the highest blood lycopene were 55% less likely to have a stroke. Alpha and beta carotene, vitamin E and retinol showed no such benefit.
Supplements
Supplement Recommendations on a Budget
Mercola argues supplements only add to a good diet, and names the few he thinks most people need on a tight budget: vitamin D, probiotics or fermented vegetables with vitamin K2, omega-3, ubiquinol and astaxanthin. He cites a figure of 69 percent of US adults taking supplements.
Supplements
Omega 3 supplements improve the n-6/3 fatty acid profile in children with ADHD
In 75 children and adolescents with ADHD randomly assigned an omega-3/6 supplement or placebo for three months, the supplement shifted blood fatty acid levels. Those whose symptoms fell more than 25 percent showed the largest rise in omega-3 and drop in the n-6/n-3 ratio.
Supplements
Astaxanthin Found to Improve Cognitive Function in Healthy, Aged Individuals
Dr. Mercola reports that an astaxanthin-rich Haematococcus pluvialis extract improved cognitive function in older people troubled by age-related forgetfulness. The pigment crosses the blood-brain barrier and cuts compounds that accumulate in the red blood cells of dementia patients.
Supplements
Mexican traditional medicine lowers bad cholesterol, dissolve gallstones
Female mice fed a gallstone-inducing diet and then given black radish juice for six days cleared cholesterol gallstones and saw cholesterol and triglycerides fall and HDL rise, Mexican researchers report. The radish is a traditional remedy for gallstones in Mexico.

Omega 3 fat reduces fatigue in breast cancer survivors
Among 633 breast cancer survivors, those with high C-reactive protein were 1.8 times as likely to report fatigue, and a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid intake went with more inflammation and fatigue. The authors call for trials of supplementation.
Supplements
L-arginine dietary supplement prevents obesity-related diseases
Rats fed a high-sugar, high-fat diet developed metabolic syndrome signs including obesity and high blood pressure, and oral L-arginine over the last eight weeks eased or normalized damage to heart, liver and pancreas by cutting inflammation and oxidative stress.
Supplements
Protamine, chitooligosaccharide reduce cholesterol levels
Rats fed protamine, chitooligosaccharide or both had lower triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, higher HDL and less fat accumulating in the liver. The Molecular Medicine Reports authors suggest the two compounds may serve as a dietary therapy against cardiovascular risk.
Supplements
Allium sivasicum extract inhibits breast cancer growth - study
A Molecular Biology Reports study from Cumhuriyet University found Allium sivasicum extracts were toxic to breast cancer cells and left tumors in treated rats 62 percent smaller, with higher caspase-7 and lower Ki-67 expression. The authors say the plant shows antitumoral potential.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids cut stroke risk
Susanna Larsson and Karolinska colleagues followed 34,670 Swedish women for a mean 10.4 years and counted 1,680 strokes. Those eating the most long-chain omega-3 fats were 16 percent less likely to have a stroke; those eating the most dietary cholesterol were 20 percent more likely.
Supplements
High leucine diet helps myocardial infarction patients
In mice given experimental heart attacks, a 28-day diet with 5 percent leucine improved cardiac structure, function and survival compared with a 1.5 percent leucine diet, and within 3.5 days had raised hypertrophic signaling and reduced inflammation.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids prevent breast cancer
Mice bred to make omega-3 fatty acids and prone to aggressive mammary tumors had 30 percent smaller tumor volume and 33 percent lower multiplicity than mice that could not; similar reductions appeared in mice fed an n-3 supplemented diet. Both groups still developed cancer.
