The Vitamin D Council newsletter summarises three Swedish papers it says support a vitamin D theory of autism, among them a Karolinska study in which the 10 adult psychiatric outpatients with autism had the lowest 25(OH)D levels of any group, averaging about 12 ng/ml.

Vitamin D Council needs your help (PR)
The Vitamin D Council asks readers to have blood drawn twice on the same day, sending one 25-hydroxy-vitamin D sample to Quest and one to LabCorp so the Council can compare the two labs. It will reimburse up to $100 on receipt of both results.

Vitamin D deficiency may lead to MRSA infection
Analyzing NHANES data from 2001 to 2004, Medical University of South Carolina researchers found 1.2 percent of the population carried MRSA and 28.3 percent were vitamin D deficient. People with serum vitamin D below 20 ng/mL faced a significantly higher risk of MRSA carriage.

The Vitamin D Newsletter: Vitamin d and heart disease
The Vitamin D Council newsletter summarizes two Annals of Internal Medicine reviews. Pittas and colleagues pooled 32 studies and concluded that lower vitamin D status seems to carry higher risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, while supplements' effect on outcomes is unknown.
Vitamins
Vitamin D Deficiency is Why You Get Flu!
A study in Nature Immunology describes how T cells need vitamin D to activate: on meeting an invader the T cell signals the vitamin D receptor gene, whose protein binds vitamin D and then produces PLC-gamma1, letting the cell start fighting the infection.

Vitamin D Nutritional Policy in Europe (Press Release)
The Standing Committee of European Doctors, the Vitamin D Workshop and the PA International Foundation convened doctors, MEPs and patient representatives at the European Parliament on 23 March 2010 to press for action on vitamin D deficiency, which speakers said affects at least half the population.

Vitamin D as effective as vaccine in preventing flu
In a randomized Japanese trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 10.8 percent of schoolchildren taking 1,200 IU of vitamin D3 daily tested positive for influenza A against 18.6 percent on placebo — 42 percent lower. The effect was largest in children not already taking vitamin D.

The Vitamin D Newsletter: More vitamin D studies
A Vitamin D Council newsletter argues the American press is ignoring recent vitamin D research, then reviews new studies, including University of Toronto work suggesting that common variants in the vitamin D binding protein help explain why blood levels respond differently to supplements.

Vitamin D and Calcium Interplay Explored
An ARS-supported study of about 10,000 US adults aged 20 and over underscores vitamin D's role in helping the body use calcium, which may help explain why raising calcium intake alone does not always cut fractures. Many younger and older adults fell below desirable serum levels.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency is why you get flu and other infections
A University of Copenhagen study in Nature Immunology reports that T cells need vitamin D to activate against bacteria and viruses. Carsten Geisler's team traces the signalling chain from the T cell receptor through the vitamin D receptor gene to PLC-gamma1.

The Vitamin D Newsletter: Shattered Family
A Vitamin D Council newsletter reprints a mother's letter to Dr. Cannell describing how her newborn son was found to have a fractured femur and further fractures, how the parents were accused of Shaken Baby Syndrome, and asking whether her own vitamin D deficiency could explain it.

Low vitamin D linked to muscle fat (PR)
A Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism study found 59 percent of subjects carried too little vitamin D and nearly a quarter were seriously deficient, below 20 ng/ml. Investigators say it is the first work to link vitamin D levels to fat accumulating in muscle tissue.

Vitamin D helps Gaucher disease patients
The FDA approved velaglucerase alfa (VPRIV) for Gaucher disease, and a separate study of 60 patients aged 17 to 85 found vitamin D insufficiency common among them, leading researchers to recommend supplementation to protect bone health in type 1 Gaucher disease.
Cancer
The Vitamin D Newsletter: Vitamin D fights cancer
The Vitamin D Council newsletter highlights a BMJ study of more than 500,000 people confirming that low vitamin D levels precede colorectal cancer in a dose-response pattern, and argues its authors underplayed their own finding that vitamin A appears to blunt that protection.

Vitamin D may help pre-diabetes
A review of studies published between 1969 and 2009 in Endocrine Practice found most cross-sectional and prospective work showed an inverse link between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, HbA1c and pre-diabetes, and a few trials found supplements improved insulin measures.
Vitamins
Swine flu, vaccine and vitamins
A Harvard School of Public Health poll found 44 percent of American adults believe the 2009 swine flu pandemic is over, and 40 percent of parents have had their children vaccinated. CDC reported flat activity and nine more child deaths that week.

Vitamin D newsletter: More letters on vitamin D and autism
A Vitamin D Council newsletter reprinting three reader letters sent in response to an earlier issue on autism, among them an aunt's account of her nephew's speech and mood improving after she gave him 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day.

The Vitamin D newsletter: Another autism case report
The Vitamin D Council gives an entire newsletter to one mother's unedited case report of her son's autism, which began around age 2.5 with sleeplessness, anxiety, obsessive repetitive questions, sensory aversions, toe-walking and self-stimulating behaviors.
