The Vitamin D Council answers Johns Hopkins researchers who reported that levels above 20 ng/ml raise the inflammation marker CRP. It notes their adjusted figures show CRP near 1.7 at 20 ng/ml versus 1.9 at 50, while their raw data show vitamin D reducing CRP in the lower ranges.

Low prenatal vitamin D linked to high risk for type 1 diabetes in children
Norwegian researchers compared 109 women whose children developed type 1 diabetes before age 15 with 219 control mothers, and found those in the lowest quartile of serum vitamin D more than twice as likely to have an affected child. They call for a randomized trial.

Could vitamin D boost your testosterone?
A Clinical Endocrinology study found men in the highest quintile of blood vitamin D had 8 percent higher total testosterone than those in the lowest, with the association flattening above roughly 75 to 85 nmol/L. The authors say the causality and direction remain unresolved.

Vitamin D3 Protects Against Eye Aging
Researchers at University College London treated aging mice with vitamin D3 for six weeks and reported reduced retinal inflammation and amyloid levels, which they suggest may bear on age-related macular degeneration. The work was done in mice.

Too much of vitamin D may harm the heart
In more than 15,000 people, Johns Hopkins researchers found vitamin D lowered c-reactive protein only up to normal blood levels; above that, CRP rose. Lead author Muhammad Amer says the vitamin helps the heart at low levels but at some point can be too much of a good thing.

Why this Vitamin is Better than ANY Vaccine and Improves Your Immune System by 3-5 Times (Opinion)
Dr. Joe Prendergast tells Mercola that German researchers found vitamin D raises immune function three- to fivefold, and argues it does more for immunity than any vaccine. The post calls vitamin D a steroid hormone that influences nearly 3,000 genes.

The Dr. Oz Show: Information I Couldn't Share
Ahead of his third Dr. Oz appearance, Mercola says the show's roughly 20-second answers left no room for detail and expands on the five topics covered: vitamin D, CoQ10 and ubiquinol, hypertension, statins and antidepressants.

Low vitamin D linked to prehypertension - Study
Among 9,215 NHANES III participants free of hypertension, those in the lowest quartile of serum vitamin D were 48 percent more likely to have prehypertension than those in the highest, independent of BMI, cholesterol, C-reactive protein and kidney filtration rate.

Vitamin D may help children with asthma
Among 86 children studied in London, those with therapy-resistant asthma averaged 28 nmol/L of vitamin D, against 42.5 in children with moderate asthma and 56.5 in those without asthma. Higher levels tracked with better lung function and fewer exacerbations.
GMO
Could 93% of These Beans be Cancer-Causing?
Mercola lists foods he says are best avoided, among them genetically engineered crops, canned acidic foods, corn-fed beef and microwave popcorn, and argues that glyphosate in Roundup Ready crops locks up nutrients, cannot be washed off, and is suspected of causing genetic damage.

Want to live a few more years? Take vitamin D supplements!
Pooling 14 prospective studies of 62,548 people, researchers found those with the lowest vitamin D had a 29 percent higher death risk than those with the highest. Risk fell as 25(OH)D rose toward about 75-87.5 nmol/L, with no further reduction above that.

Dodgy Doctors Say: This Health Video Should be Banned
Mercola reports that the American Academy of Pediatrics, which takes money from vaccine makers, asked Delta Air Lines to pull an in-flight flu-prevention video made by the National Vaccine Information Center because it covered handwashing, sleep and diet rather than focusing on vaccination.

The difference between a prophet and a madman - vitamin d newsletter
John Cannell reprints his British Journal of Nutrition article on Edgar Hope-Simpson, the self-taught epidemiologist who worked out the cause of shingles and spent his last two decades arguing that an unknown “seasonal stimulus” averse to sunlight governs influenza.

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to High Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Among 411 obese children and 87 normal-weight ones, those with lower vitamin D levels showed greater insulin resistance, University of Texas researchers report. Lead author Micah Olson says the study could not prove a link between low vitamin D and type 2 diabetes.

Vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women boosts risk of type 1 diabetes in children
Comparing 109 Norwegian women whose children developed type 1 diabetes with 219 whose children did not, researchers found children of mothers with the lowest serum vitamin D in pregnancy were more than twice as likely to develop the disease.

Vitamin D may delay progression of clinical diabetes
John Cannell points to a Tufts double-blind randomized trial in which 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day had a major effect on insulin resistance. Its authors said vitamin D may have a role in delaying progression to clinical diabetes in adults at high risk of type 2.

This Vitamin D Supplement Mistake Raises Your Death Rate by 2% -- Are You at Risk? (comment)
Mercola cites a Cochrane meta-analysis of 50 randomized trials covering 94,000 participants that showed a 6 percent relative mortality reduction with vitamin D3 and a 2 percent increase with D2. He urges readers using oral supplements to take D3 and aim for a serum level of 50-70 ng/ml.

How to Get Your Vitamin D Within to Healthy Ranges
Mercola argues sun exposure is the best route to adequate vitamin D, with a safe tanning bed next and oral D3 a last resort, citing GrassrootsHealth data that the average adult needs 8,000 IU a day to clear 40 ng/ml on a 25(OH)D test.
