A review in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology concludes vitamin D may benefit men with early-stage prostate cancer on surveillance. In the authors' trial, 4,000 IU daily for a year left supplemented patients less likely to have positive cores at repeat biopsy.

Vitamin D improves odds of colorectal cancer survival
Among 1,202 European colorectal cancer patients, those in the highest quintile of vitamin D measured before diagnosis had 31 percent lower risk of dying from the cancer and 33 percent lower risk of dying from any cause. Receptor genotypes showed no link to survival.

Pyridoxine supplements may help prevent hip fracture
Among 63,257 Singapore Chinese Health Study participants followed a mean 13.8 years, women with the highest dietary pyridoxine intake were 22 percent less likely to suffer a hip fracture. No link appeared in men, and other B vitamins showed no association.

What You Need to Know About Vitamin K2, D and Calcium
Dr. Mercola interviews naturopathic physician Kate Rheaume-Bleue about vitamin K2, which she links to Weston Price's Activator X and says works alongside calcium and vitamin D. Blood clotting is vitamin K1's job; K2, she argues, has been overlooked despite extensive modern research.

Vitamin D deficiency linked to higher risk of breast cancer
In an Australian case-control study of 214 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and 852 controls, patients averaged lower serum vitamin D (53.0 versus 62.0 nmol/L). Women in the severely deficient, deficient or insufficient ranges were 2.3 to 2.5 times more likely to be diagnosed.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency linked to high risk of acute respiratory infections
A review in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology found strong evidence across 39 observational studies linking vitamin D deficiency to upper and lower respiratory tract infections, while clinical trials were inconsistent, using different doses and baselines.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency linked to rheumatoid arthritis (activity)
A Clinical Rheumatology meta-analysis covering 215,757 participants found those with the highest total vitamin D intake 24 percent less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, and serum vitamin D inversely associated with disease activity in all but one of eight studies.
Vitamins
Vitamin D cuts breast cancer death risk in overweight and obese patients
Reviewing studies for Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, Case Western researchers estimate that low vitamin D may account for roughly 16 percent of the extra breast cancer mortality seen in overweight and obese patients.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency linked to asthma
A review by Royal Brompton researchers reports that children with asthma appear more prone to vitamin D insufficiency, and that those with low levels tended to have more symptoms and exacerbations, reduced lung capacity and higher medication use. Vitamin D may also enhance steroid response.

Strong New Evidence That MS Risk Affected by Birth Month, Mom's Vitamin D Status
Reviewing data on more than 150,000 MS patients, researchers found people born in April or May were significantly more likely to have multiple sclerosis than those born in October or November. Mercola ties the pattern to sunlight and maternal vitamin D levels in utero.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy boosts autism risk
A review in Research in Developmental Disabilities found evidence that vitamin D deficiency, in pregnancy or early childhood, may act as an environmental trigger for autism in genetically predisposed children, through brain development and gene regulation. The authors call for urgent research.

Antioxidant rich fruits/veggies, vitamin C prevents mutation
Among 82 male airline pilots, dietary vitamin C, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and lutein-zeaxanthin were inversely associated with chromosome translocations. Pilots eating above-median amounts of high-vitamin-C produce had 36 to 41 percent fewer such mutations.

Breast Cancer News: Folate may promote ER-/PR- breast cancer progression
A Nutrition Journal study of 980 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients in Korea found that among women with ER-/PR- tumors, high intake of folate and vitamin B2 was linked to more than double the odds of a poor prognosis, while the nutrients did not affect ER+ or PR+ disease.
Vitamins
Vitamin C may help fight melanoma, breast cancer
In mice unable to make their own vitamin C, an ascorbate-supplemented diet reduced melanoma metastasis by 71 percent and slowed breast tumor growth by 28 percent, and sharply lowered serum IL-6 and VEGF, compared with mice on a vitamin C-free diet.
Vitamins
Coenzyme Q10 may help (prevent) cardiac arrest
In 23 cardiac arrest patients and 16 healthy controls, CoQ10 averaged 0.28 versus 0.75 umol/L. Levels ran lower still in patients who died, and CoQ10 was a statistically significant predictor of poor neurologic outcome and in-hospital mortality.
Vitamins
Vitamin D fights periodontitis
A study in Steroids found vitamin D or 25(OH)D3 given to diabetic mice lowered fasting glucose, serum TNF-alpha and alveolar bone loss. Researchers read the changes as evidence of anti-inflammatory action they say may matter for treating periodontitis in diabetes.
Vitamins
Choline, betaine prevent breast cancer in women with low folate
A Chinese case-control study of 807 breast cancer patients and 807 matched controls found women with the highest choline and betaine intakes had 60 and 41 percent lower breast cancer risk. The inverse link with choline appeared mainly in women with low folate.
Vitamins
Vitamin A, vitamin C lower non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, diffuse lymphoma
Among 154,363 postmenopausal women followed 11 years, 1,104 developed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Those with the highest total vitamin A intake were 17 percent less likely to develop it, and those highest in vitamin C 31 percent less likely to develop diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
