In the EPIC study of 367,993 European women, those in the top fifth for dietary folate intake were 8% less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Among premenopausal women, estrogen receptor-negative tumors were 34% less likely; no link appeared after menopause.

Help Sweep Dangerous Plaque from Your Arteries - Easier Than You Think
Dr. Mercola interviews Maastricht researcher Leon Schurgers on vitamin K2, which he says prevents arterial calcification by activating Matrix Gla protein. People consuming the most K2 have the lowest rates of cardiovascular disease and calcification.

Vitamin D supplements help diabetes mellitus type 1, type 2
A Minerva Pediatrica study gave 70 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 biweekly for three months and saw fasting blood sugar and HbA1c fall significantly, with no change in insulin dose. Two-thirds of them were vitamin D deficient at the start.

Vitamin D prevents intestinal fibrosis in IBD
In mice made vitamin D deficient and given chronic colitis, a vitamin D-sufficient diet significantly lowered histological scores for intestinal fibrosis, which researchers in Nanjing read as a prophylactic effect. The work was done in mice, not patients.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may help insulin resistance
A Chinese study suggests serum vitamin D predicts insulin resistance in healthy people and that vitamin D supplementation may help normalize that metabolic disturbance.

Vitamin E intake critical during 'the first 1,000 days'
An Oregon State analysis argues adequate vitamin E matters most for the very young, the elderly, and women who are or may become pregnant. Maret Traber says deficiency happens more often than assumed, partly because the best sources rarely feature in American diets.

Vitamin D3 supplement prevents type 2 diabetes mellitus
In an Indian trial, prediabetic adults taking 60,000 IU of vitamin D3 plus calcium saw 10.9 percent progress to type 2 diabetes over about two years, against 26.5 percent of controls, and 41.8 percent returned to normal blood sugar versus 20.4 percent.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplements may help some Alzheimer's patients
A Frontiers in Pharmacology report notes 70 to 90 percent of Alzheimer's patients are vitamin D deficient and that low levels often precede cognitive decline. It cites supplementation improving executive function and processing speed at four weeks.
Vitamins
Vitamin D prevents cardiac failure
A review of 21 studies linked vitamin D supplementation to an 18 percent lower risk of cardiac failure, and an analysis of RECORD trial data put the reduction at 25 percent. Neither analysis found lower risk of heart attack or stroke. RECORD used 800 IU a day.
Vitamins
Diabetes mellitus patients should take vitamin D supplements
A Chinese study of 350 patients with type 2 diabetes found those with carotid plaques had significantly lower blood vitamin D than those without, and that carotid intima-media thickness was greater in patients with lower vitamin D levels.
Vitamins
Dietary vitamin D, calcium prevent arterial stiffness
Among 535 Japanese men aged 35 to 69, dietary calcium intake was inversely associated with a measure of arterial stiffness, but the link was striking only in men with higher vitamin D intake. Vitamin D alone showed no association. The authors say adequate intakes of both may protect.

The Clinical Impact of Vitamin C: My Personal Experiences as a Physician
Cardiologist Thomas E. Levy recounts twenty years of using vitamin C, beginning with a visit to dentist Hal Huggins's Colorado Springs clinic that led him to close his cardiology practice. He gave 50-gram infusions to seriously ill patients undergoing extensive dental surgery.

Multivitamin, protein/amino acid supplements make you feel better
A survey of US military and Coast Guard personnel found users of multivitamin and protein or amino acid supplements reported feeling more awake, relaxed, cheerful and clearheaded. The authors caution the link may not be causal, citing no known biological mechanism.
Vitamins
Multivitamin helps diabetes mellitus
Rats given streptozotocin plus a multivitamin preparation for eight weeks improved on every diabetes measure taken, including fasting glucose, HbA1c, glucose tolerance and insulin, while males on the drug alone worsened. Female rats showed no benefit and no severe prediabetic phenotype.

Coenzyme Q10 helps heart failure too
In a trial of 62 heart failure patients in Iran, adding 100 mg of coenzyme Q10 twice daily to 10 mg of atorvastatin for four months raised ejection fraction and improved New York Heart Association class compared with atorvastatin alone.

Vitamin C supplements protect sperm in males with diabetes mellitus
In diabetic mice, daily intraperitoneal vitamin C at 10 mg/kg improved sperm count, motility, morphology and viability. The authors conclude the antioxidant can blunt the damage diabetes does to sperm parameters, chromatin quality and apoptosis in this experimental model.
Vitamins
Vitamin C supplement protects the liver
In mice injured with carbon tetrachloride, vitamin C supplements reduced liver enlargement dose-dependently, lowered liver enzymes and serum lactic acid, raised antioxidant enzyme activity and cut inflammation. The authors say it shows anti-hepatotoxic potential.

Multivitamin, protein supplements make you happier?
A study of US military and Coast Guard personnel found those using multivitamin or protein supplements reported being more awake, relaxed, cheerful and clearheaded, and rated their health, eating and fitness more highly. Users of protein plus purported steroid analogs reported more aggression.
