Among women aged 18 to 42 undergoing IVF, those with serum 25(OH)D of 20 ng/mL or above had a 31% clinical pregnancy rate versus 20% for those below, and were about twice as likely to conceive after adjustment for other confounders.

Delta-tocotrienol fights rheumatoid arthritis
Rats with collagen-induced arthritis given delta-tocotrienol, a form of vitamin E, at 10 mg/kg for 25 days had less paw swelling than rats given glucosamine. The authors say the vitamin E may be of therapeutic value against rheumatoid arthritis.

Protein reduces anticancer effect of vitamin A
Virginia Commonwealth University researchers report in Cancer Research that the protein AEG-1 binds retinoid X receptors and blocks retinoic acid signalling in leukemia and liver cancer. In animal models, suppressing AEG-1 let retinoic acid kill liver cancer cells.

Multivitamin/mineral supplements help chronic fatigue syndrome
In a Serbian study of 38 women with chronic fatigue syndrome, two months of multivitamin and mineral supplements raised superoxide dismutase levels and reduced fatigue, sleep disorders, autonomic symptoms, and headache frequency and intensity.
Vitamins
Vitamin D: a critical and essential micronutrient for human health
A Frontiers in Physiology review by DSM Nutritional Products scientists notes vitamin D3 comes either from sunlight on skin or from a short list of foods, and links severe deficiency to bone disease, with autoimmune, cancer and cardiovascular connections still under discussion.

Vitamin D may prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease - study
Following 1,658 dementia-free people over 65 for about six years, researchers reporting in Neurology found those with low vitamin D were 53 percent more likely to develop dementia and the severely deficient 125 percent more likely, with similar figures for Alzheimer's disease.

Vitamin D reduces the death risk in breast cancer patients
A meta-analysis of 30 prospective studies in the British Journal of Cancer tied the highest vitamin D intake to 5 percent lower breast cancer risk and higher serum 25(OH)D to an 8 percent reduction. Patients with high 25(OH)D were 42 percent less likely to die of breast cancer.

Vitamin B12 supplements may help dementia
A Health Quality Ontario review of 18 studies published before August 2012 supports a role for low vitamin B12 in neurocognitive disorders such as dementia. B12 with folate appeared to slow brain atrophy in mild cognitive impairment, and oral B12 treats deficiency.

Niacin Unsafe
In the HPS2-THRIVE study of 25,673 participants followed four years, extended-release niacin carried a 9 percent higher risk of death than placebo and did not cut heart attack or stroke risk, according to a New England Journal of Medicine report.

Alpha-tocopherol boosts high grade prostate cancer risk
In SELECT trial data covering 1,746 prostate cancer cases, high plasma alpha-tocopherol was linked to 59% higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer, and among men also taking selenomethionine the highest levels carried 110% higher risk. Gamma-tocopherol showed no link.
Vitamins
Vitamin A, vitamin E fight rheumatoid arthritis
Rats with induced arthritis given vitamin A or vitamin E for four weeks had significantly lower serum leptin, along with reduced TNF-alpha, IL-6 and CRP and higher IL-10. The authors say the findings may point toward a new approach to treating rheumatoid arthritis.
Vitamins
Niacin too dangerous for routine cholesterol therapy
A Northwestern cardiologist argues in a New England Journal of Medicine editorial that niacin should no longer be prescribed to most patients. In a four-year trial of statin-treated adults, it did not cut heart attacks or strokes and raised liver problems, infections, bleeding, gout and diabetes.

IV vitamin C helps patients with shingles
In 67 patients with symptomatic herpes zoster, two weeks of intravenous vitamin C alongside standard treatment was followed by lower pain scores and fewer skin lesions over 12 weeks, plus less fatigue. The authors suggest concomitant IV vitamin C may ease shingles-related pain.

Taking B vitamins won't prevent Alzheimer's disease
Oxford researchers pooled 11 randomized trials covering 22,000 people and found B vitamins cut blood homocysteine by about a quarter but made no difference to memory, processing speed, executive function or overall cognition compared with placebo.

Vitamin D3 supplements improve urticaria or hives
In a trial of 42 chronic urticaria patients already on triple drug therapy, adding 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily cut symptom scores a further 40 percent by week 12 while 600 IU did not. The high dose also tracked with better sleep and itch scores, with no adverse events.
Vitamins
Vitamin C prevents endothelial dysfunction
A Newcastle University meta-analysis of 44 trials found vitamin C supplementation improved endothelial function, with the strongest effects in patients at high cardiovascular risk. Higher doses tracked with greater improvement; trial design and baseline levels did not.
Vitamins
Type 2 diabetes drug Metformin lowers serum vitamin B12
A systematic review of six trials found serum vitamin B12 significantly lower in patients taking metformin than in those on placebo or other drugs, down 37.99 pmol/L below 2,000 mg a day and 78.62 pmol/L at higher doses. The authors suggest B12 supplements.

Vitamin C helps wound healing
A British Journal of Community Nursing report says vitamin C plays a role in every phase of wound healing, including collagen production and maturation, and that wounding can deplete ascorbic acid in blood and tissue. It urges clinicians to watch for deficiency.
