In a single-blind trial, 104 Iranian women took either a multivitamin or a multivitamin-mineral supplement for 20 weeks from week 16 of pregnancy. Those on the multivitamin-mineral gained less weight, had lower BMI at week 28 and delivery, and had babies with heavier birth weight and larger heads.

Vitamin D deficiency linked to depression
Among 3,570 Korean adults, those reporting depressive symptoms had lower serum vitamin D than those without (41.6 vs 44.3 nmol/L), and 28% fewer of those at 50 nmol/L or above reported symptoms. The authors say low levels were associated with increased risk of depressive symptoms.

Vitamin D supplements prevent tooth loss
A German study reports that each 10 microgram per litre increase in serum 25(OH)D correlated with a 13% lower risk of tooth loss after adjustment for multiple confounders. Vitamin D supplementation did not appear to protect against caries progression.
Vitamins
Statin users should take Co enzyme Q10 supplements
Statins lower serum Co-Q10 by blocking the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, putting users at risk of deficiency. A report in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders suggests supplementation improves that problem, and cites evidence for obesity, oxidative stress and inflammation.

Vitamin D lowers cancer mortality, but not incidence?
Pooling randomized trials, a meta-analysis found daily doses of 400 to 1,100 had little effect on total cancer incidence over two to seven years but lowered cancer death risk by a significant 12 percent. The writer argues those doses are low and suggests adults may need 5,000 IU a day.

Vitamin D prevents pneumonia, sepsis
People with serum 25(OH)D below 37 nmol/L were 157 percent more likely to be hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia and 75 percent more likely for sepsis, after adjustment for other conditions. The analysis covered 132 pneumonia and 422 sepsis patients plus controls.

Coenzyme Q10 may help cognitive decline in postmenopausal women
Mice lost significant cognitive function four weeks after their ovaries were removed. Daily oral coenzyme Q10 at 10 mg/kg for four weeks restored it while easing the mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress the surgery caused.

Low lung cancer risk linked to high dietary vitamin E intake
Among 72,829 Chinese women who never smoked, followed about 12 years, those meeting dietary guidelines for tocopherol were 22 percent less likely to develop lung cancer, and 47 percent less likely among those exposed to secondhand smoke. Vitamin E supplement users had 33 percent more risk.

Prenatal/maternal folate supplementation prevents childhood brain tumors
Children born to mothers in the highest tertile of dietary folate intake during pregnancy were 30% less likely to be diagnosed with a brain tumour, an Australian case-control study found. Folic acid supplements were tied to 33% lower risk; B6 and B12 showed no association.
Vitamins
Folate, vitamin B12 linked to prostate cancer
A review in Advances in Clinical Chemistry reports meta-analyses tying high circulating vitamin B12 and folate to 10% and 18% higher prostate cancer risk. The author says the B12 link could be reverse causality, and urges caution over mandatory folate fortification given how common the disease is.

Vitamin D supplements lower death risk from diseases
A BMJ review of 73 cohort studies and 22 trials found people with the lowest circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D were 35 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease and 35 percent more likely to die of any cause. Vitamin D3 supplements cut all-cause mortality by 11 percent.

Synthetic folate boosts breast cancer risk - study
European American women with the highest intake of synthetic folate were 53% more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those with the lowest, an International Journal of Cancer study found, while folate from natural foods was tied to lower risk in Black women.

Vitamin supplements prevent hearing loss in older people
Data on 1,910 Korean adults aged 50 to 80 showed supplement users hearing better at all frequencies, with vitamin C intake tied to better mid-frequency hearing. Retinol, riboflavin and niacin intake also correlated with better hearing; higher serum vitamin D correlated with worse.
Vitamins
Nutrition and the Risk of Alzheimer's Disease
A review of diet and Alzheimer's risk: epidemiological studies tie antioxidants, B vitamins, polyphenols, polyunsaturated fats, fish, fruit, vegetables and coffee to lower risk, though many randomized trials contradict them. Healthy, Japanese and Mediterranean diets track with lower risk.
Vitamins
Weight loss surgery patients should use vitamin B12 supplements - review
A review in Surgery for Obesity and Related Disease finds B12 deficiency most common after bariatric surgery and calls intramuscular B12 the gold standard. Gastric bypass patients who skip injections should take high-dose oral cyanocobalamin; banding and sleeve patients need less.
Vitamins
Vitamin D lowers high blood pressure in diabetic pregnant women
Among 184 pregnant women with gestational diabetes, those with vitamin D below 30 ng/mL had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In white women, vitamin D independently predicted systolic pressure; the association did not hold in other ethnic groups.

Gamma-tocopherol hurts lungs –new study
Northwestern researchers report gamma-tocopherol, the vitamin E abundant in soybean, canola and corn oils, goes with decreased lung function, while alpha-tocopherol in olive and sunflower oils goes with better function. Cook-Mills estimates 4.5 million Americans may have reduced lung function.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency linked to heart disease
Among 95 patients with type 2 diabetes and no coronary artery disease, 63 percent were vitamin D deficient, and deficiency was independently associated with impaired global longitudinal strain on echocardiography. The Hong Kong authors say it may contribute to myocardial dysfunction.
