A meta-analysis of five studies found higher serum 25(OH)D at breast cancer diagnosis correlated with lower case fatality, with patients in the highest quintile 50% more likely to survive than those in the lowest. The authors urge restoring levels to 30-80 ng/ml with monitoring.

Vitamin E, vitamin C prevent dementia
In a Honolulu Heart Program study, men taking vitamin E and C supplements had roughly 80 percent lower risk of vascular dementia and 70 percent lower risk of mixed dementia, plus better cognitive scores later. No protective effect showed up for Alzheimer's disease.
Vitamins
Antioxidant vitamins help type 2 diabetes mellitus
A meta-analysis of 10 trials found antioxidant vitamin supplements made no overall difference to endothelial function in type 2 diabetes, but did improve it in patients with a BMI under 29.45. The authors say vitamin E and C may help non-obese patients specifically.

Vitamin D may not help prevent breast cancer?
An analysis of 582 breast cancer cases and matched controls from the Nurses' Health Study II found no link between calculated free 25(OH)D, or vitamin D binding protein, and overall breast cancer risk in premenopausal women. It was not a trial.

Vitamin D lowers risk of death from diseases
Pooling 73 cohort studies and 22 randomized trials, Cambridge researchers found people in the bottom third of circulating vitamin D were 13 to 35 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, cancer and all causes. Trials showed 11 percent lower all-cause mortality with vitamin D3.
Vitamins
Thiamine helps diabetes mellitus type 2
In a six-month study of 86 people with type 2 diabetes and 26 matched healthy adults, 100 mg of thiamine a day lowered total cholesterol by three months and improved lipid profile, serum creatinine and thiamine levels. The authors call it a promising adjuvant therapy.
Vitamins
Vitamin C sufficiency lowers risk of hemorrhagic stroke
French researchers compared blood vitamin C in 65 people who had suffered an intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke and 65 who had not, and found those without strokes had higher levels. Presented at the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting.
Vitamins
Synthetic folate/folic acid may boost risk of breast cancer
A study in the International Journal of Cancer found European American women with the highest synthetic folic acid intake were 58 percent more likely to develop breast cancer than those with the lowest. Among premenopausal African American women, high natural folate intake tracked with lower risk.
Vitamins
Multivitamins help cognition in young men
In a 16-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 138 adults aged 20 to 49, men taking a multivitamin improved on the incongruent Stroop task, a measure of selective attention and response inhibition. Women showed no such benefit, though B vitamin levels rose in both.
Vitamins
Higher vitamin D levels associated with better cognition and mood in PD patients
In a cross-sectional analysis of 286 Parkinson's patients, higher plasma vitamin D levels went with lower symptom severity, better cognition and less depression, and the relationships were stronger among the 225 patients who were not demented.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplements reduce pain in fibromyalgia sufferers (PR)
Researchers writing in PAIN report that vitamin D supplements reduced pain in fibromyalgia patients with low calcifediol levels, and suggest the vitamin may be a cost-effective alternative or add-on to other treatment. The syndrome has no cure and no treatment covers all its symptoms.
Vitamins
Vitamin D status associated with multiple sclerosis activity, progression (PR)
In 465 patients followed up to five years after a first episode suggestive of MS, a 50-nmol/L rise in average blood vitamin D over the first year was associated with 57 percent lower risk of new active brain lesions and 57 percent lower risk of relapse.
Vitamins
Large amounts of folic acid shown to promote growth of breast cancer in rats
Folic acid at 2.5 to five times the daily requirement significantly promoted growth of existing pre-cancerous and cancerous cells in the mammary glands of rats, Young-In Kim's lab at St. Michael's Hospital reports in PLOS ONE. Folate's role in breast cancer remains contested.
Vitamins
Vitamin B12 supplement protects against hepatic fibrosis
In rats given N'-nitrosodimethylamine, vitamin B12 supplementation restored liver function markers, glycogen and hepatic B12 reserves and helped normal liver architecture return, a Pharmaceutical Biology study reports. The authors conclude B12 protects against the toxin's fibrosis.
Vitamins
Vitamin C fights influenza
Mice unable to make vitamin C and exposed to H3N2 influenza carried more virus and less antiviral interferon, plus more inflammatory cytokines, than sufficient mice, an Immune Network study found. The authors conclude vitamin C aids early antiviral responses.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplementation lowers infection risk
In a trial of 644 Australians aged 60 to 84, those given 60,000 IU of cholecalciferol monthly were 28 percent less likely than the placebo group to be prescribed antibiotics at least once. Among participants aged 70 and older, the reduction reached 47 percent.
Vitamins
Vitamin B2 reduces risk of breast cancer
Following 20,756 Melbourne women for an average of 16 years, researchers found those in the highest quartile of dietary vitamin B2 were 16 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, while those highest in vitamin B12 were 21 percent more likely.
Vitamins
B Vitamins and Methionine Affect Colorectal Cancer Risk
A Nutrition and Cancer study following 37,112 adults for 15 years found colon cancer risk 37% lower with low methionine and high folate intake but 37% higher with high methionine and high folate. Vitamin B6 showed a U-shaped relationship with colon cancer risk.
