A case-control study of 405 Japanese breast cancer patients and as many controls found women with the highest dietary cadmium were 23% more likely to have breast cancer, and 94% more likely to have ER-positive tumors after menopause.

Vitamin D supplement may help prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus
A meta-analysis of 21 prospective studies covering 76,220 people and 4,996 diabetes cases found those with the lowest vitamin D levels had a 38% higher risk of type 2 diabetes than those with the highest, with each 10 nmol/L rise in 25(OH)D tied to 4% lower risk.

Vitamin D helps long-term memory in multiple sclerosis
In a small trial of 35 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, higher serum vitamin D tracked with better immediate and delayed recall on the Rey Complex Figure Test, even after adjusting for intelligence and disease duration. Mood and verbal memory showed no link.

Vitamin D during pregnancy may cut risk of childhood cancers
Rather than testing supplements, researchers estimated pregnant women's solar UV exposure and found the most exposed had 11%, 31% and 29% lower risk of a child diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia, hepatoblastoma or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma between ages 0 and 5.

Vitamin D predicts risk of death patients suffering acute ischemic stroke
Among 231 Chinese patients treated for acute ischemic stroke, those with low serum vitamin D were 30% more likely to die within 90 days and 21% more likely to have a poorer short-term outcome. Stroke patients averaged 14.2 ng/mL against 17.9 in controls.

Cooking and vitamin D retention
Danish researchers found eggs and margarine baked 40 minutes in an oven retained only 39 to 45 percent of their vitamin D, while pan-frying retained 82 to 84 percent and boiled eggs 86 to 88 percent. Baked rye bread kept 69 percent and wheat bread 85 percent.

Vitamin D prevents a variety of diseases
Pawel Pludowski and colleagues reviewed observational studies and randomized trials and concluded that adequate vitamin D status appears protective against musculoskeletal disorders, infections, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, several cancers and mental illness.
Vitamins
Vitamin E, vitamin C, niacin prevent dementia, boost cognitive function
Among 3,385 Japanese-American men aged 71 to 93 in the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, those taking both vitamin E and C supplements were 82 percent less likely to be diagnosed with vascular dementia and scored better on cognitive tests. Neither vitamin was linked to Alzheimer's risk.
Vitamins
Alzheimer's disease may benefit from Coenzyme Q10 supplementation
Older mice fed 2.81 mg per gram of coenzyme Q10 for 15 weeks did better in the Morris water maze and showed less protein oxidative damage than mice on a control diet, a study in the journal Age reports, suggesting CoQ10 may counter age-related decline in spatial learning.

Here is why vitamin C protects against influenza virus infection
Researchers report that vitamin C-insufficient Gulo(-/-) mice died within a week of intranasal influenza H3N2 inoculation, with higher lung viral titers and less interferon-alpha/beta but more inflammatory cells and TNF-alpha, suggesting vitamin C aids early antiviral responses.

NBC Says It's Useless, But It May Slash Your Risk of 16 Different Cancers
Dr. Mercola disputes NBC's report that vitamin supplements do not prevent heart disease or cancer, citing Andrew Saul's rebuttal that the Kaiser Permanente analysis rested on 24 preselected studies, and Saul's list of 19 studies pointing the other way.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency linked to elevated risk of cardiovascular disease
Greek researchers followed 252 coronary artery disease patients averaging 72 years old, 88% of them vitamin D deficient. Those patients were seven times as likely to die of cardiovascular causes, though the authors call for interventional studies to confirm.

Vitamins/minerals supplements cut breast cancer death risk
Among 7,728 Women's Health Initiative participants diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and followed about seven years, those taking multivitamin and mineral supplements had a 30% lower rate of death from the disease, an association that held after adjusting for confounders.

Low vitamin D raises risk of anemia in children
Johns Hopkins researchers tested blood from 10,400 children and found vitamin D levels ran lower in those with low hemoglobin. Children with levels below 30 ng/mL were twice as likely to be anemic, and anemia reached 14 percent in black children against 2 percent in white children.

Vitamin C cures high grade prostate cancer - case report
A single case report in Personalized Medicine Universe describes a man with Gleason 7 prostate cancer whose vascular tumor was no longer detectable after 10 months of high-dose intravenous vitamin C. Author John Salerno says the approach deserves further consideration.
Vitamins
Low vitamin D and high vitamin A a risk factor for osteoporosis
Among 232 healthy postmenopausal women, those with the highest serum retinol had eight times the risk of osteoporosis, and the risk rose further when vitamin D fell below 20 ng/mL. The authors call for better vitamin D status and policies to avoid high vitamin A levels.
Vitamins
Vitamin C, vitamin D may prevent deadly avian influenza
Citing an Australian man given intravenous vitamin C and a new Immune Network study, the piece argues high-dose vitamin C taken early may help prevent avian influenza or shorten it. It notes no vaccine exists for newly emerging flu viruses and that Tamiflu does not prevent infection.

Vitamin C eases muscle fatigue in COPD patients
In a study of 10 COPD patients, intravenous vitamin C infusions eased skeletal muscle fatigue, improved breathing, lowered resting blood pressure and blood flow, and raised blood antioxidant activity compared with placebo. The researchers had proposed oxidative stress as one cause.
