Among 1,883 postmenopausal UK women, those in the top quintile of total and dairy protein intake had 7.6 and 5.5 percent higher serum IGF-I, a growth factor tied to higher cancer risk. Heavy drinkers and current hormone therapy users showed lower IGF-I.

Phytochemicals
Resveratrol helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
A meta-analysis covering 196 people with type 2 diabetes found resveratrol supplements significantly improved systolic blood pressure, HbA1c and creatinine, but not fasting glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, diastolic pressure, blood fats or cholesterol. Side effects matched placebo.
Diet
Vegetarian diet may lower risk of premature ovarian failure
Comparing 453 women who had premature ovarian failure with 400 who had normal ovarian function, Chinese researchers tied pelvic surgery, mumps, relatives with menstrual abnormalities and chemical exposure to higher risk, and vegetarian diet, tea and mineral water to lower risk.
Herbs
Chinese yam extract prevents obesity
Korean researchers fed mice a high-fat diet for 14 weeks with or without Dioscorea batatas extract. The extract cut weight gain, visceral fat, serum lipids, leptin and inflammatory cytokines, apparently by downregulating genes involved in fat formation. The work was done in mice.
Supplements
Fish oil benefits can be null when polluted with PCBs
Swedish researchers followed 33,446 women free of heart disease for 12 years to test whether PCB contamination offsets the heart benefits of long-chain omega-3s from fish and fish oils, and suggest polluted fish or oil may not protect against heart attack.
Supplements
Lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C linked to telomere length
In the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study, elderly people with higher serum vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin had longer leukocyte telomeres, regardless of body mass index, oxygen uptake or vascular conditions. The study did not test whether the nutrients affect lifespan.
Supplements
Iron supplementation helps recover after blood donation - study
The NIH-funded HEIRS study found low-dose iron supplements significantly shortened the time blood donors needed to recover lost iron and hemoglobin. About 25-35% of regular donors develop iron deficiency, which can otherwise take months to reverse.
Herbs
Green tea fights obesity
Korean researchers fed mice a high-fat diet with 1% green tea and found less adipose tissue and lower triglycerides, glucose, insulin and leptin than with the high-fat diet alone. The article warns that the doses needed for an anti-obesity effect could cause severe liver toxicity.

Documentary “Shots in the Dark” Delves into Catastrophic Vaccine Reactions
The 2011 documentary 'Shots in the Dark: Silence on Vaccine' examines vaccine toxicity and catastrophic reactions, suggesting some people cannot clear toxic ingredients and are left open to brain inflammation and neurological damage. Mercola blames drug lobby money for blocking policy change.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplements may fight colorectal cancer
Among 1,043 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer enrolled in a randomized treatment trial, those with the highest serum vitamin D levels survived a median of 32.6 months versus 24.5 months for those with the lowest, according to work set for the 2015 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium.
Supplements
Alpa-lipoic acid helps weight loss
In a 10-week trial, 97 overweight or obese women cut calories by 30 percent while taking alpha-lipoic acid, EPA, both or neither. Weight loss was significantly greater in the women given alpha-lipoic acid, while EPA blunted the fall in leptin that accompanies weight loss.
Supplements
Fructans protect against colon cancer
Rats fed a fructan-rich supplement from Agave salmiana developed significantly fewer early colon cancer lesions than controls after azoxymethane exposure, a Natural Product Communications study reports. The authors suggest agave fructans may lower colon cancer risk as inulin-like fructans do.
Diet
Western diet linked to endometrial cancer
An Italian case-control study of 454 women with endometrial cancer and 908 hospital controls linked the most Western-style diets to 63 percent higher risk and diets heavy in animal foods and polyunsaturated fats to 76 percent higher risk. Associations were stronger among obese women.
Supplements
Propionate supplement reduces energy intake, prevents weight gain
In a 24-week crossover trial with 60 overweight adults, 10 grams of inulin-propionate ester stimulated PYY and GLP-1 and cut energy intake. Over the study the supplement reduced weight gain, intra-abdominal fat and liver fat and preserved insulin sensitivity.
Phytochemicals
Dietary fiber fights inflammation in overweight/obese adults
A meta-analysis of 14 randomized trials found high dietary fiber intake lowered circulating C-reactive protein by 0.37 mg/L in overweight and obese adults. A sub-analysis found the reduction only among those taking 8 grams of fiber a day or more.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplements help vitamin D deficient type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
In a double-blind trial of 81 type 2 diabetes patients with vitamin D of 10-30 ng/mL, 50,000 IU weekly for eight weeks normalized vitamin D and lowered fasting glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR but left adiponectin unchanged. The authors say eight weeks may have been too short.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may prevent some but not all sorts of influenza illness
In a Japanese trial, high school students taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily had about the same overall influenza A rate as those on placebo, 13.5 against 12.1 percent, during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The vitamin D group had fewer cases in month one but more in month two.
Vitamins
Vitamin C restores E coli endotoxin induced endothelial dysfunction
In a crossover trial, 36 men given E. coli endotoxin had flu-like symptoms, lower serum vitamin C and endothelial function cut by up to 76 percent. Two high intravenous doses of vitamin C, 320 and 480 mg/kg, restored endothelial function, the Vascular Pharmacology authors report.
