A Mexican study found Citrus limetta peel extract at 20 mg/ml inhibited alpha-amylase by nearly 50 percent and alpha-glucosidase by nearly 30 percent, enzymes that break down carbohydrates. The researchers credit the peel's antioxidative polyphenols.

Dietary folate may lower breast cancer risk
In the EPIC study of 367,993 European women, those in the top fifth for dietary folate intake were 8% less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Among premenopausal women, estrogen receptor-negative tumors were 34% less likely; no link appeared after menopause.

Help Sweep Dangerous Plaque from Your Arteries - Easier Than You Think
Dr. Mercola interviews Maastricht researcher Leon Schurgers on vitamin K2, which he says prevents arterial calcification by activating Matrix Gla protein. People consuming the most K2 have the lowest rates of cardiovascular disease and calcification.

High fructose corn syrup worse than table sugar - new study
University of Utah biologists fed mice sugar at doses proportional to human intake and found the fructose-glucose mixture in high-fructose corn syrup cut female mice's reproduction and lifespan more than table sugar did. Male mice showed no difference between the two sugars.
Diet
Cutting Down On Meat But Not Exactly A Vegetarian? You are a Reducetarian Says New Group
A new group wants everyone cutting back on meat for health, environmental, ethical or economic reasons to adopt the label “reducetarian.” Co-founder Brian Kateman argues the term appeals because not everyone is able or willing to give up meat entirely.
Supplements
Yohimbine HCL may help diabetics who suffer ED
In a double-blind trial of 82 impotent men, many with diabetes or vascular disease, 14 percent fully restored erection after a month on up to 42 mg of oral yohimbine hydrochloride and 20 percent responded partly. Side effects were few and benign.
Supplements
Raspberry ketone may be good for weight loss
Raspberry ketone has not been tested in human obesity trials, but preliminary animal research from Korea and Japan reports it raises lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation, blocks fat-building gene expression, and prevented obesity and fatty liver in mice fed a high-fat diet.
Phytochemicals
Red wine compound helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
A Molecular Nutrition & Food Research review covering 196 patients found resveratrol added to drug treatment for type 2 diabetes significantly lowered systolic blood pressure, HbA1c and creatinine, but not fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR or blood lipids. No major adverse effects were reported.
Diet
Low glycemic diets may not improve cardiovascular outcomes when compared to high-glycemic diets
An NIH-funded controlled feeding study of 163 overweight adults found no significant difference between low- and high-glycemic index versions of the DASH eating plan in insulin sensitivity, HDL or LDL levels, or blood pressure. The results appear in JAMA.
Diet
5 Ways to Amp Up your New Year’s Diet Resolution
Merilee Kern relays five points from HealthyWage co-founder Jimmy Fleming for New Year dieters. The first is to write down specific goals and dates; he suggests a modest one to two pounds a week, so roughly six pounds over a first month.
Supplements
Caralluma fimbriata extract may prevent diabetes mellitus type 2 or insulin resistance
Indian researchers report that rats fed a high-fat diet plus Caralluma fimbriata extract at 200 mg/kg daily for three months had better glucose, insulin sensitivity, leptin and triglycerides, and less oxidative stress, than high-fat-fed rats given none.
Supplements
Raspberry ketone fights obesity, fatty liver - studies
Japanese researchers reported in Life Science that raspberry ketone kept mice on a high-fat diet from gaining liver and visceral fat, and reduced that fat when given after weight gain. They studied it because its structure resembles capsaicin and synephrine.

New Science Website Reveals the Truth About Sugar
Scientists at three US universities launched SugarScience.org to put independent research before the public. Mercola cites an analysis finding industry-tied studies were five times more likely to report no link between sugar and obesity, and notes added sugars hide in 74 percent of processed foods.

Drinking green tea or sour tea helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a trial of 100 people with type 2 diabetes in Iran, drinking 150 ml of green tea or sour tea infusion three times daily for four weeks raised HDL cholesterol in both groups. Fasting blood insulin fell among green tea drinkers, who also saw a greater drop in HOMA-IR.
Food
Alcohol drinking linked to low risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus
Among 11,000 New Zealand workers aged 40 and over, light to moderate drinkers of normal weight or overweight had 77% and 62% lower odds of type 2 diabetes than non-drinkers, with no association among obese people. The study cannot show cause, and alcohol is a recognized carcinogen.

Sugar promotes dental caries, fluoride may not help much
A re-analysis of the dose-response between sugar and tooth decay suggests capping sugar at 3 percent of energy, about 17 grams a day, rather than the WHO's 10 percent. In fluoridated areas, nearly half the teeth of people over 65 were still affected by caries.
Minerals
High salt can raise risk of cardiovascular disease
A review in Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension argues salt damages blood vessels independently of blood pressure, inducing oxidative stress that impairs endothelial function and stiffens arteries. Its authors say even people with normal blood pressure should avoid high salt intake.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplements help diabetes mellitus type 1, type 2
A Minerva Pediatrica study gave 70 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 biweekly for three months and saw fasting blood sugar and HbA1c fall significantly, with no change in insulin dose. Two-thirds of them were vitamin D deficient at the start.
