Among 25,096 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, 36 percent reported erectile dysfunction over 10 years. Higher intakes of flavones, flavanones and anthocyanins were linked to 9 to 11 percent lower risk, and high fruit intake to 14 percent lower risk in men under 70.

Herbs
Cornus officinalis may help fight breast cancer
A Cancer Research study tested an extract of the Chinese herbal medicine Cornus officinalis on the triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cell line and found it inhibited growth, with stronger effects at higher doses. Triple-negative tumors do not respond to hormone-based therapy.
Supplements
Folate supplements cause gestational diabetes mellitus
In a cohort study of 3,474 pregnant women in Anhui, China, those who took folic acid daily in the first trimester were 120 percent more likely to develop gestational diabetes than non-users; women who were also overweight or obese beforehand were 463 percent more likely.
Supplements
Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements prevent colorectal cancer
A Harvard study drawing on the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study found taking glucosamine with chondroitin was linked to about 23% lower colorectal cancer risk, while glucosamine alone was not. How the supplements might protect is unknown.
Food
Eating raw garlic fights lung cancer
In a Chinese case-control study of 399 lung cancer cases and 466 controls, people eating raw garlic less than twice a week were 44% less likely to have lung cancer and those eating it twice a week or more 50% less likely. The design cannot establish cause.
Vitamins
Higher Dose of Vitamin D May Benefit Pregnant Women
USDA and UC Davis scientists report in The Journal of Nutrition that a vitamin D dose above the 400 IU common in prenatal supplements may reduce inflammation in pregnancy. Surveys suggest deficiency affects up to 69 percent of pregnant American women.
Diet
Why Holiday Eating Can Be Deadly
Adhesions left by past abdominal or pelvic surgery can squeeze the intestines shut, and a large holiday meal is often the trigger. The piece follows Dorise Hunt through seven surgeries for obstructions before she turned to a non-surgical therapy, the Clear Passage Approach.
Diet
Home enteral nutrition helps gastrointestinal cancer patients
In a trial of 79 malnourished patients who had surgery for upper gastrointestinal cancer, those given home enteral nutrition held their weight while those receiving only nutritional counselling lost 3.6 kg on average over two months, and they were more likely to finish chemotherapy.
Vitamins
Vitamin B12b boosts anticancer effect of ascorbic acid
A 2007 report by Russian Academy of Sciences researchers found vitamin B12b increased the hydrogen peroxide, oxidative stress, DNA strand breaks and cell death that ascorbic acid produced in human larynx carcinoma cells. Iron chelators and catalase blocked much of the effect.
Supplements
Oleanolic Acid Can be Another Cancer Treatment
A study in Cell Biochemistry and Biophysics reports that high salt-induced osmotic stress boosted cancer cell growth and aerobic glycolysis, and that oleanolic acid, found in olive oil and garlic, offset the rise in glycolytic enzymes and cut cell proliferation.
Food
Carrot juice may help leukemia
Treating myeloid and lymphoid leukaemia cell lines with carrot juice extract for up to 72 hours induced apoptosis and arrested the cell cycle, with lymphoid cells most sensitive and normal blood stem cells least affected, a UK laboratory study found.
Minerals
Selenium may prevent aggressive prostate cancer
Pooling 15 prospective studies, researchers found blood selenium unrelated to total prostate cancer risk but linked to 57% lower risk of aggressive disease, while nail selenium, a marker of long-term intake, corresponded to up to 71% lower total risk.
Supplements
Ketone supplements help fight cancer
Researchers fed healthy rats ketone supplements for one to four months and saw blood ketones reach therapeutic levels, glucose drop 20%, carnosine rise fourfold and several inflammatory markers fall. The authors say the short-term changes suggest protection against cancer.
Herbs
Annona muricata crude extract fights breast cancer
Researchers screened 19 Annona muricata crude extracts, then gave the most potent one to mice with 4T1 breast tumors. It shrank tumor size and weight, blocked metastasis, induced apoptosis and raised white blood cell, T-cell and natural killer cell counts.
Food
Polyacetylenes in carrot juice fight leukemia
Testing carrot juice fractions on human lymphoid leukemia cells, researchers traced the killing power to polyacetylenes rather than carotenoids. Falcarinol and falcarindiol-3-acetate worked best, inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.
Herbs
Dandelion Root and Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia
A report describes patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia improving on dandelion root tea, some entering complete remission as long as they kept drinking it. About three cups a day may be needed, and the tea appeared not to interfere with other treatments.
Vitamins
Vitamin b12 important for kids' cognition
A review in Advances in Nutrition notes that inadequate vitamin B-12 intake or blood levels during pregnancy and early childhood are associated with impaired cognitive development, and that no study has tested whether B-12 supplements benefit children's cognition.
Supplements
DHA prevents liver cancer
A 2015 Advances in Nutrition paper reports that in mice prone to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis on a Western diet, the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA altered liver metabolism and reversed diet-induced oxidative stress and fibrosis, which the authors say may lower liver cancer risk.
