The study reports that Wasabia japonica extract activates TNF-alpha, Fas-L, caspases, truncated Bid and cytochrome C, triggering apoptosis and autophagy in colon cancer cells, and slowed tumor growth in an animal test.

Food
Whole grains cut breast cancer risk
A case-control study of 250 breast cancer patients and 250 matched controls found women who ate whole grain products at least seven times a week were 50% less likely to have breast cancer than women who rarely or never ate them.
Diet
Famine, malnutrition raise risk of breast cancer
A study in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment found that among breast cancer patients, women exposed to China's Great Famine of 1959-1961 were more likely to have ER-PR-, ER-PR+ or ER+PR- tumors than ER+PR+ tumors, particularly those exposed after a first birth.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may help diabetes mellitus patients
In a randomised trial, type 2 diabetes patients took 4,000 IU of cholecalciferol daily if their serum vitamin D was below 20 ng/mL, or 2,000 IU if it was 20 to 30 ng/mL, for 16 weeks. The researchers found supplementation improved endothelial function.
Vitamins
Cancer patients may need thiamine supplements
Among 217 cancer inpatients referred for psychiatric consultation at a large cancer center, 55.3 percent were thiamine deficient, a Psycho-Oncology study found. The authors link it largely to fluorouracil-based chemotherapy and weight loss, and urge oncologists to watch for it.
Minerals
Potassium intake lowers kidney stone risk
Data from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and both Nurses' Health Studies link dairy protein to lower kidney stone risk and meat protein to 15% to 20% higher risk. Potassium intake was tied to almost 56% lower risk, which the piece attributes to eating more vegetables.
Food
Beet root juice helps fight breast cancer
In lab tests, rat heart cells and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells treated with beet root juice alongside doxorubicin showed less heart cell death and more cancer cell death. The authors say lower juice concentrations gave the best mix of heart protection and anticancer effect.
Diet
Mediterranean diet cuts risk of heart failure
Among 37,308 men in the Cohort of Swedish Men who were free of cardiovascular disease at baseline, high adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with up to 31% lower risk of developing heart failure and 45% lower risk of dying from it.
Food
Eating eggs linked to high risk of diabetes mellitus
A meta-analysis of 12 studies in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found no consistent link between egg consumption and type 2 diabetes overall, though in US studies people eating three or more eggs a week showed 39% higher risk. It cannot prove eggs are the cause.
Supplements
Chenpi extract prevents diabetes mellitus, obesity
Rutgers researchers fed obesity-prone mice a high-fat diet with 0.25% or 0.5% chenpi extract for 15 weeks; those mice escaped the obesity, fatty liver and diabetic symptoms seen on the diet alone. The effect tracked with AMPK activation in fat tissue.
Food
Eating corn oil, soybean oil may increase ovarian cancer risk?
A study of 65,590 women in the Nurses' Health Studies found high recent polyunsaturated fat intake linked to a 45% higher ovarian cancer risk, though the link weakened to a non-significant 20% for cumulative intake. The authors call it an association, not proof of cause.
Supplements
Potassium/magnesium citrate prevents kidney stones
A Journal of Urology trial gave 20 subjects potassium-magnesium citrate or placebo through five weeks of strict bed rest, a known stone risk. The treated group showed lower calcium oxalate saturation and less undissociated uric acid; the report gives no stone counts for either group.
Supplements
CoQ10 may help cognitive decline in postmenopausal women
Female mice showed marked cognitive decline four weeks after their ovaries were removed, along with weakened mitochondrial enzyme activity and higher oxidative stress. Oral CoQ10 at 10 mg per kg for four weeks reversed those deficits in this surgically induced model of menopause.
Supplements
L-arginine may help breast cancer
A BMC Cancer study found that L-arginine supplementation slowed tumor growth, prolonged survival and cut myeloid-derived suppressor cells in mice with mammary tumors, which the authors attribute to stronger innate and adaptive immune responses. The work was done in rodents, not people.
Nutrition
B vitamins help Alzheimer's disease
In a study led by David Smith at Oxford, B vitamins helped preserve memory and cognition in early-stage Alzheimer's patients only when omega-3 levels were high: among those, a third worsened over two years versus 59 percent on placebo. B vitamins did not help when omega-3 levels were low.
Food
Believe it or not, baking soda fights cancer
An eLife study from Zhejiang University reports that adding sodium bicarbonate to Tila-Tace improved all treated liver cancer patients, against about 40% responding to Tila-Tace alone, and cut viable tumour residue 93% versus 55%. Mean survival ran over three years against half a year.
Vitamins
Dietary antioxidants reduce risk of ischemic stroke
Among 34,555 people in the Swedish National March Cohort, women in the highest quartile of dietary nonenzymatic antioxidant capacity were 27% less likely to have a stroke and 35% less likely to have an ischemic stroke. No benefit appeared in men or for hemorrhagic stroke.
Vitamins
Study reveals how vitamin D protects against prostate cancer
Stanford researchers report that calcitriol lowers expression of the COX-2 gene and raises expression of 15-PGDH, reducing levels of prostaglandins that promote prostate cancer growth. They suggest pairing it with NSAIDs that inhibit COX activity.
