A meta-analysis of 15 observational studies covering 4,249 breast cancer cases found women with the highest circulating adiponectin were 34% less likely to be diagnosed, with each 3 microgram/ml increase linked to a 5% lower risk. Low adiponectin often accompanies high body fat.

Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acids prevent arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women
In rats whose ovaries had been removed, omega-3 supplementation at 0.8 g/kg a day prevented the rises in arterial stiffness, blood pressure, body weight and aortic thickness seen after surgery. The Italian-led study appeared in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
Supplements
Curcumin may ease "side effects" of high fat diet
In LDL receptor-deficient mice, curcumin at 500 to 1,500 mg per kg of diet cut uptake of oxidized LDL, slowed weight and body fat gain and, at the high dose, suppressed steatohepatosis and reduced fibrotic liver tissue, Tufts researchers report in Atherosclerosis.
Herbs
Yerba mate tea helps lower LDL cholesterol
A Fitoterapia study found yerba mate lowered triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet, without changing HDL. In rats with normal cholesterol it changed nothing but raised some oxidation markers. The authors suggest it may help people with high cholesterol.
Vitamins
Vitamin D lowers high blood pressure in diabetic pregnant women
Among 184 pregnant women with gestational diabetes, those with vitamin D below 30 ng/mL had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In white women, vitamin D independently predicted systolic pressure; the association did not hold in other ethnic groups.
Herbs
Hypericum, saffron effective in treating depression
Reviewing more than 20 herbal remedies, the authors name seven as promising for depression, anxiety and insomnia, but say only hypericum (St John's wort) and saffron have clinical confirmation. Hypericum has been tested in more than 5,000 patients across trials.
Phytochemicals
Hemidesmus indicus roots help type 2 diabetes mellitus
Beta-amyrin palmitate from Hemidesmus indicus root extract showed potent anti-hyperglycemic activity in two rat models of diabetes at 50 microgram/kg, apparently by blocking sugar entry from the intestine, a European Journal of Pharmacology study reports.
Supplements
Something about Garcinia Cambogia – weight loss supplement
A rundown of garcinia cambogia's search popularity and safety. A 2012 review in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine suggested 2,800 mg a day should be safe, and the writer urges caution with high hydroxycitric acid products.
Supplements
L-Arginine reduces central obesity
Twenty obese women aged 18 to 40 took 3 grams of L-arginine three times a day for 12 weeks alongside lifestyle counselling. Waist circumference fell from 115.6 cm to 109.2 cm and weight from 98.6 kg to 95.7 kg.
Diet
Vegetarian diet prevents high blood pressure
An analysis in JAMA Internal Medicine found vegetarians' blood pressure ran lower than omnivores': 4.8/2.2 mm Hg lower across seven controlled trials and 6.9/4.7 mm Hg lower across 32 observational studies covering more than 21,000 people.
Phytochemicals
Curcuminoids relieve knee osteoarthritis
In a six-week trial in Phytotherapy Research, 19 patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis took 1,500 mg of curcuminoids daily and 21 took placebo. The treated group improved on pain and physical function scores, though not stiffness, with no significant adverse effects.
Diet
Low-carb vegan diet may reduce heart disease risk and weight
St. Michael's Hospital researchers report that the low-carbohydrate vegan Eco-Atkins diet cut cholesterol by 10 per cent and took off about four more pounds over six months than a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. They estimate the change may lower heart disease risk by 10 per cent over 10 years.
Diet
Poor diet before pregnancy is linked with preterm birth (PR)
University of Adelaide researchers report that women who consistently ate high-fat, high-sugar and takeaway foods before conceiving were about 50% more likely to have a preterm birth than those eating protein, fruit, whole grains and vegetables. The study covered 300-plus women.
Supplements
Omge-3 fatty acids plus alpha lipoic acid slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease
A 12-month trial split 39 people with Alzheimer's into placebo, omega-3, and omega-3 plus alpha-lipoic acid groups. The authors report some evidence the combination slowed progression, though the oxidative stress marker F2-isoprostane, ADAS-cog and ADL showed no significant differences.
Supplements
Saffron helps many medical conditions
A review in Drug Research collects trials of saffron against depression, Alzheimer's, itching, weight gain and premenstrual symptoms. Eight trials found saffron extract beat placebo for depression and worked about as well as some antidepressant drugs.
Supplements
Vitamin D plus calcium supplement prevents hip fracture - review
A Cochrane review of 53 trials with nearly 100,000 participants found vitamin D taken with calcium cut hip fracture risk about 16 percent in older adults, while vitamin D alone, in the formats and doses tested, appeared ineffective against hip or any new fracture.
Supplements
Maca root extract helps erectile dysfunction
In a 12-week trial, 50 men with mild erectile dysfunction took 2,400 mg of Maca dry extract or placebo. Both groups improved on the IIEF-5 score, but the Maca group improved significantly more and was alone in gaining on physical and social performance measures.
Food
Better Brain Health with Less Saturated Fat
A review in Neurobiology of Aging covering 19,792 participants found higher saturated fat consumption was linked to greater risk of Alzheimer's disease, dementia and cognitive decline. Trans fat intake also showed risk, but the data on it were mixed.
