Chinese researchers found cyanidin-3-glucoside combined with trastuzumab synergistically triggered apoptosis, slowed cell growth and altered HER2 signaling in three breast cancer cell lines, and inhibited tumor growth in a xenograft model.

Phytochemicals reduce skin injury caused by radiotherapy
In lab tests, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid and trans-cinnamic acid at non-toxic concentrations cut gamma-radiation skin damage by 40%, 20% and 15%. The researchers say the compounds both deactivate reactive oxygen species and aid DNA repair.
Phytochemicals
Drinking tea helps weight loss or prevents obesity
Decaffeinated polyphenol extracts from green, black and oolong tea lowered body weight, visceral fat and liver fat in male mice fed a high-fat, high-sucrose diet. Only the green tea extract cut food intake, by about 10 percent.

Dietary fiber lowers risk of death in patients suffering heart attack
Among 2,258 women and 1,840 men who survived a heart attack, higher fiber intake afterward was associated with a 25 percent lower risk of death, and cereal fiber with 27 percent. High intake both before and after the attack was linked to a 31 percent lower risk.
Phytochemicals
Chlorogenic acid rich coffee helps insulin resistance
Ten healthy volunteers drank caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee high in chlorogenic acid, or ordinary decaf, for 14 days while overfed fructose. All three coffees lowered hepatic glucose production, but none significantly changed the liver fat that fructose overfeeding had more than doubled.
Phytochemicals
Hemidesmus indicus roots help type 2 diabetes mellitus
Beta-amyrin palmitate from Hemidesmus indicus root extract showed potent anti-hyperglycemic activity in two rat models of diabetes at 50 microgram/kg, apparently by blocking sugar entry from the intestine, a European Journal of Pharmacology study reports.
Phytochemicals
Curcuminoids relieve knee osteoarthritis
In a six-week trial in Phytotherapy Research, 19 patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis took 1,500 mg of curcuminoids daily and 21 took placebo. The treated group improved on pain and physical function scores, though not stiffness, with no significant adverse effects.
Phytochemicals
Cholesterol-Lowering Activity of the Major Polyphenols in Grape Seed
In laboratory tests, gallic acid, catechin and epicatechin inhibited pancreatic cholesterol esterase, bound bile acids, and at 0.2 mg/mL cut cholesterol micelle formation by about 27, 12 and 19 percent. The authors say these mechanisms could delay cholesterol absorption.
Phytochemicals
Dietary fiber helps fight constipation, save medical costs
A FASEB Journal study estimates that if half of U.S. adults ate 3 more grams of fiber a day, more than $2 billion in constipation-related medical costs could be saved annually, and $12.7 billion if all adults reached 25 grams. Each extra gram tracked with a 1.9 percent lower constipation rate.
Phytochemicals
Fiber Can Reduce Colorectal Cancer Risk
A Gastroenterology meta-analysis of 20 studies found people eating the most fiber from vegetables, fruits and grains were 28 percent less likely to develop colorectal polyps, precursors to colorectal cancer, with each extra 10 grams a day cutting the likelihood by 9 percent.
Phytochemicals
Daidzein supplementation lowers serum triglycerides, uric acid
In a six-month trial, 210 adults aged 40 to 65 with high cholesterol took placebo, 40 mg or 80 mg of daidzein daily. Daidzein lowered serum triglycerides and uric acid, with the bigger drop in carriers of the GA genotype of ESR-beta RsaI.
Phytochemicals
Stigmasterol may help prevent Alzheimer's disease
A Journal of Neuroscience report says stigmasterol was the only plant sterol tested that cut production of amyloid-beta, and that a stigmasterol-supplemented diet showed a protective effect in vivo. The authors suggest such blends might help prevent Alzheimer's.
Phytochemicals
Caffeine overdose can be lethal
A case report describes a 39-year-old man who died after ingesting about 12 grams of caffeine anhydrous, with blood levels of 350 mg/L at autopsy. The authors note lower doses can cause agitation, irregular heartbeat and psychosis, and urge mandated labeling of pure caffeine.
Phytochemicals
Mulberry anthocyanins prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus
Zucker diabetic fatty rats given mulberry anthocyanin extract twice a day for five weeks had significantly lower glucose than controls, with levels normalized at the higher 250 mg/kg dose. The authors call anthocyanins a promising class of compounds for preventing type 2 diabetes.
Phytochemicals
Lutein, zeaxanthin prevent age-related cataract
Pooling six prospective cohorts covering 4,416 cataract cases among 41,999 people, researchers found the highest intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin went with 25%, 15% and 23% lower risk of nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular cataract respectively.
Phytochemicals
American ginseng extract prevents breast cancer
Oregon State researchers found a crude American ginseng fraction inhibited the growth of cultured human breast cancer cells and killed them at high doses. Cells exposed to both estradiol and ginsenosides did not grow, which the team reads as evidence the ginsenosides act as antiestrogens.
Phytochemicals
Flaxseed may help prevent breast cancer
An Ontario case-control study of 2,999 women with breast cancer and 3,370 without, published in Cancer Causes & Control, linked eating flaxseed to 18% lower risk and flax bread to 23% lower risk. Flaxseed is high in lignans, a phytoestrogen that may interfere with estrogen.
Phytochemicals
Dietary fiber cuts stroke risk
A systematic review in Stroke pooled eight cohort studies and found 7 grams a day of total dietary fiber was associated with lower risk of a first hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke. An extra 4 grams of soluble fiber showed no such link.
