Exposed to metastatic MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells, high concentrations of grape seed extract inhibited proliferation while low concentrations reduced cell migration and invasion. The authors call the extract, rich in procyanidin, a candidate for developing agents against breast cancer metastasis.

Flavonoids boost memory
Feeding 18-month-old rats pure anthocyanins or flavanols for six weeks, at levels comparable to blueberries, improved spatial working memory much as blueberry supplements did. The work was done in animals, so human benefit is not yet confirmed.

Breast Cancer News: Soluble dietary fiber prevents breast cancer in young women
In a Connecticut case-control study of 557 breast cancer patients and 536 controls, premenopausal women eating the most soluble fiber had 62% lower breast cancer risk, and 85% lower risk of ER-negative disease. No link appeared in postmenopausal women.

Drinking red wine to treat Alzheimer's disease?
After rats were given Cabernet Sauvignon, researchers tested the brain-targeted metabolite quercetin-3-O-glucuronide and found it cut beta-amyloid formation in cell cultures, interfered with peptide interactions, and improved Alzheimer's-type synaptic deficits.

Asparagus - next cure for breast cancer?
Indian researchers report that shatavarin compounds isolated from Asparagus racemosus roots killed human breast, colon and kidney cancer cells in vitro, and that oral extract at 250 and 500 mg/kg for 10 days shrank tumours in mice with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.
Phytochemicals
Dietary resveratrol may help Alzheimer's disease
In mice with an age-related condition resembling Alzheimer's, resveratrol raised mean and maximum lifespan, cut amyloid deposits and tau hyperphosphorylation, and eased cognitive impairment, apparently by activating SIRT1 and AMPK pathways.

The Ultimate Antioxidant: Fight Premature Aging for Free
Dr. Mercola argues that barefoot contact with the ground supplies electrons that act as antioxidants against inflammation. He points to studies he says link Earthing to changes in blood viscosity, heart rate variability, cortisol, sleep and stress.

High intake of dietary flavonoids cuts risk of Parkinson disease
Across 49,281 men and 80,336 women followed about two decades, men in the top fifth of flavonoid intake were 40 percent less likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson disease; no significant link appeared in women. Anthocyanins and berries tracked with 24 and 23 percent lower risk.
Phytochemicals
Red grape polyphenols fight breast cancer
Resveratrol, quercetin and catechin each did nothing to breast cancer cells at 0.5 microM, but combined they cut cell proliferation and blocked the cell cycle, and they shrank tumours in a nude mouse model, with the strongest effect at 5 mg/kg.

Serum lycopene cuts stroke risk in men
Among 1,031 Finnish men followed a median of 12.1 years, those in the highest quartile of serum lycopene had 59 percent lower risk of ischemic stroke and 55 percent lower risk of any stroke than the lowest quartile. Alpha- and beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol and retinol showed no link.
Phytochemicals
Soy isoflavones and breast cancer/puberty timing
A Chilean review reports that epidemiological studies tie soy isoflavone intake to lower breast cancer incidence while human intervention studies show both promoting and inhibiting effects. The authors argue timing matters, since isoflavones compete with estrogen for its receptors.

Drinking green tea helps prevent obesity - study confirms
Kobe University researchers fed mice a high-fat diet and found green tea and its polyphenol EGCG raised IGFBP-1 in white adipose tissue, an increase that came with lower adipose tissue weight. The authors suggest this is how green tea may curb obesity.
Phytochemicals
Resveratrol may help prevent progression of breast cancer
In cell and mouse work published in Nutrition Research and Practice, resveratrol reduced breast cancer cell adhesion, migration, invasion and MMP-9 activity, and cut lung nodules in mice dose-dependently. The doses used would scale to roughly 14,000 mg a day for a 150-pound woman.

Dietary fiber from all food sources cuts ischemic heart disease death risk
In the EPIC-Heart study of 306,331 adults across eight European countries, each extra 10 grams of daily fiber was linked to a 15 percent lower risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, and the association held regardless of which foods supplied the fiber.

Astaxanthin for Heart Health and Chronic Pain
Dr. Robert Corish, an anesthesiologist and pain specialist, tells Dr. Mercola why he began looking past pills and surgery, and describes astaxanthin research that has moved from animal models into human clinical studies across more than 500 peer-reviewed papers.

Anthocyanin Intake Decreases Type 2 Diabetes Risk
Diet data on more than 200,000 U.S. men and women tied anthocyanin-rich fruit to lower type 2 diabetes risk: more than five servings of apples or pears a week, or two of blueberries, went with 23 percent lower risk than eating them less than once a month.

Liver Cancer News: Beta-Carotene May Prevent Hepatocellular Carcinoma
In rats with transplanted hepatocellular carcinoma, 30 days of oral beta-carotene at 20, 40 or 60 mg/kg slowed tumour growth, shifted immune and liver blood markers and reduced liver tissue damage, according to a study published in Molecules.

Dietary fiber cuts colorectal cancer risk - new study
In EPIC data covering 4,517 colorectal cancer cases over about 11 years, each extra 10 grams of daily fiber was linked to a 13 percent lower risk. Cereal, fruit and vegetable fiber all tracked with lower colon cancer risk; only cereal fiber tracked with lower rectal cancer risk.
