Among 306,331 people in eight European countries followed 11.5 years, each extra 10 grams of daily fiber was associated with a 15 percent lower risk of dying from ischemic heart disease. Cereal, fruit and vegetable fiber showed similar reductions, with no clear advantage to any one source.

Carotenoids supplements may help cut breast cancer risk
A meta-analysis found blood carotenoid levels tracked more strongly with breast cancer risk than diet questionnaires did. Each 100 ug/dL of total carotenoids was tied to 22% lower risk and each 25 ug/dL of lutein to 32%, while only beta-carotene intake showed a link, at 5% per extra 5,000 ug a day.

Astaxanthin: A Rising Star in Alzheimer's Prevention
Dr. Mercola cites Alzheimer's Association figures — a new US case every 69 seconds and 5.4 million Americans affected — and argues that with no cure and few effective drugs, lifelong prevention matters most, before turning to new findings on astaxanthin.

Nearly 1 in 2 Americans are Now Victims of This Heartless Marketing Ploy
Mercola argues off-label Avastin for macular degeneration rests on one study showing it matched the costlier Lucentis, and points to astaxanthin research instead. He also cites a finding that newborns withdrawing from mothers' prescription painkillers tripled between 2000 and 2009.

Ellagic acid fights metabolic syndrome induced by high carb, high fat diet
Rats fed a high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet for 16 weeks developed heart trouble, impaired glucose tolerance and fatty liver. Those whose diet included ellagic acid, found in fruits such as raspberries and pomegranates, showed milder symptoms and normalized Nrf2, NF-kappaB and CPT1 levels.

The Oil that May Help Relieve Arthritis, Sciatica and Back Pain
Dr. Mercola surveys castor oil's long folk use against pain, inflammation and digestive complaints, noting that scientific studies are few and some negative side effects are reported. He credits ricinoleic acid, and says the toxin ricin is not present in the oil.

Beer may improve health of obese people?
A PLoS ONE study found that eight weeks of tetrahydro iso-alpha acids, compounds from hops, reduced weight gain in obese diabetic mice while cutting gut permeability and normalising insulin sensitivity markers. The work was led by Patrice Cani in Belgium.

Fiber May Prevent Breast Cancer
A pooled analysis in Annals of Oncology, funded by the World Cancer Research Fund, found breast cancer risk about 5 percent lower for every 10 grams of fiber eaten daily, and 7 percent lower in women eating the most fiber compared with those eating the least.

Flavonoid-rich fruit, vegetables linked to low cardiovascular death risk
Among 38,180 men and 60,289 women followed for 7 years, those with the highest total flavonoid intake were 18% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. Men in the top intake group were 37% less likely to die of stroke than those in the lowest.

Got type 2 diabetes mellitus? Eat lots of dietary fiber!
A meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials found that dietary fiber lowered fasting blood glucose by 0.85 mmol/L and HbA1c by 0.26 percent compared with placebo in people with type 2 diabetes, leading the authors to recommend more fiber for these patients.

Chlorophyll can help prevent cancer - study
Oregon State researchers dosed 12,360 rainbow trout and found chlorophyll cut tumors at the modest carcinogen levels people actually encounter, but increased tumors at very high doses, a result that questions how rodent studies at high exposures are used.

Increase dietary fiber, decrease disease (PR)
Scientists in India reviewed decades of dietary fiber research and advise raising intake gradually and spreading high-fiber foods across meals and snacks to avoid gas and loose stool, naming fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans and pulses as sources.

Some Call It the World's Best Antioxidant -- Protecting Your Eyes, Brain, and Preventing Wrinkles
Antioxidant expert Rudi Moerck describes astaxanthin, a carotenoid from marine algae that cannot act as a pro-oxidant and reaches both the water- and fat-soluble parts of a cell. Claimed benefits span macular degeneration, sunburn and wrinkles; the only documented side effect is slightly pink skin.

Diet full of antioxidants helps cut stroke risk
Following about 36,700 Swedish women, researchers found those whose diets had the highest total antioxidant capacity were 17 percent less likely to have a stroke. Among women with prior cardiovascular disease, the top quartile had 45 percent lower hemorrhagic stroke risk.

Powerful antioxidant resveratrol prevents metabolic syndrome in lab tests: U of A study (PR)
University of Alberta researchers gave resveratrol to newly weaned rat pups that had grown poorly in the womb and found it prevented the metabolic syndrome they would otherwise develop, marked by glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and abdominal fat. The work was in rats.

Powerful Antioxidant Found Useful for Most Common Cause of Death
Mercola summarizes work in Marine Drugs finding the marine carotenoids astaxanthin and fucoxanthin have strong antioxidant and possible anti-cancer effects, plus a study in which resveratrol-treated cardiac stem cells improved heart function and cell regeneration in mice for several months.

Drink wine to protect against UV-induced sunburns?
The site pushes back on headlines saying wine prevents sunburn: the study tested grape polyphenols, not wine, and found they stopped reactive oxygen species forming in human skin cells exposed to UV-A and UV-B. The authors suggest cosmetic uses; alcohol itself is a recognised carcinogen.

Grape extract may protect against skin damage by UV radiation
University of Barcelona researchers found that polyphenols from grapes stopped UV-A and UV-B exposure from generating reactive oxygen species in human epidermal cells, pointing to a possible cosmetic use against sun-induced skin damage.
