Forty-five women with breast cancer were assigned for one month to a vitamin tablet, chlorella granules or a chlorella extract drink. Breast cancer subscale scores rose in the granule group, and half the extract group reported less fatigue and less dry skin. Larger studies are needed.

L-Leucine supplements help Pompe disease
In mice with Pompe disease, insulin combined with L-leucine normalised mTORC1 activation, and chronic leucine supplementation partly protected against kyphosis and muscle loss while increasing spontaneous activity and running capacity. Albert Einstein College of Medicine researchers led the work.
Supplements
NucleVitalQ10 Complex maintains antioxidant system
Scientists at the University of Lodz gave 66 healthy women aged 35 to 55 the supplement NucleVital Q10 Complex for 12 weeks. Plasma antioxidant capacity, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity and telomerase concentration rose, while lymphocyte telomere length did not change.
Supplements
Mushroom supplement fights melanoma
In mice injected with melanoma cells, a mushroom mycelia supplement called CARI III at 300 mg/kg a day reduced tumour weight about as much as the drug doxorubicin, and the treated mice lived 51% longer than controls.
Supplements
Selenium supplement helps Hashimoto's thyroiditis
A report notes that correcting selenium deficiency with supplements is linked to reduced production of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and its authors say selenium may be an effective treatment option. No effective treatment currently exists for the disease.

GanedenBC30 Probiotic Receives Regulatory Approval in Mexico
Ganeden Biotech said Mexico's health regulator COFEPRIS has approved its patented probiotic GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086) as a food and beverage ingredient. The company says the spore-forming strain is unusually stable and already appears in more than 100 products worldwide.
Supplements
Vitamin C, green tea help arsenic poisoning
Rats given inorganic arsenic five days a week for six weeks, alongside vitamin C solution or green tea infusion, showed reduced lipid peroxidation and a smaller arsenic-induced drop in tail nerve conduction velocity. The antioxidants did not affect weight gain. Nutritional Neuroscience.
Supplements
Green coffee bean extract prevents obesity
In mice fed a high-fat diet, green coffee bean extract reduced fat gain and reversed insulin resistance, Yonsei University researchers report. The minimum effective dose was 0.3 percent, equal to about 1.45 grams for a 60-kg person; the extract used was decaffeinated.
Supplements
Amino acid supplement helps diabetic foot wounds
A University of Nevada review and nine-patient pilot study found supplements of arginine, glutamine and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate raised tissue hydroxyproline, a collagen component, in diabetic foot ulcers, and that one reviewed trial showed better wound depth and appearance scores.
Supplements
Parenteral glutamine supplement helps acute liver injury
In 44 emergency ICU patients, those given parenteral glutamine at 0.4 g/kg daily for seven days had higher serum HSP-70 and glutamine, lower ALT, AST, bilirubin, TNF-alpha and IL-6, and higher CD3 and CD4. The authors link the raised HSP70 to better outcomes in acute liver injury.
Supplements
Dietary fiber psyllium helps fecal incontinence
In a trial of 189 people with fecal incontinence given 16 grams of fiber a day for 32 days, only psyllium reduced episodes compared with placebo, while carboxymethylcellulose increased them. All the supplements were well tolerated.
Supplements
Protein supplements help grow muscle, enhance strength/performance
A review of more than 30 studies found protein supplements did not build lean mass or strength during the first weeks of resistance training in untrained people, but did promote strength gains in trained and untrained adults as training duration, frequency and volume rose.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids help hypertension
Among hypertensive patients seen at a hospital in Ajman, UAE, three months of omega-3 supplementation was associated with significant drops in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, particularly among men, and among non-diabetics and patients with hypertension.
Supplements
Microalga Chlamydomonas debaryana helps IBD
In rats with chemically induced colitis, the microalga Chlamydomonas debaryana and its oxylipin (13S)-HOTE limited weight loss and colon shortening, reduced colonic damage and raised mucus production, a University of Seville team reports, pointing to an anti-inflammatory effect.
Supplements
Spirulina a good source of vitamin A
Chinese school-age children given two or four grams of spirulina five days a week for ten weeks increased their total-body vitamin A stores, a study found, pointing to the alga as a beta-carotene source the body converts to vitamin A only as needed.
Supplements
Bilberry extract helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a crossover study, eight men with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes took a concentrated bilberry extract or placebo before a glucose-equivalent drink. The extract lowered post-meal blood sugar and insulin, apparently by slowing carbohydrate digestion.
Supplements
Alpha-lipoic acid reduces brain injury induced by methionine/choline deficiency
University of Belgrade researchers fed mice a methionine/choline deficient diet, which raised malondialdehyde and NOx across brain regions. Alpha-lipoic acid supplementation normalized those markers and raised catalase activity and glutathione, which the authors say may prevent such injury.
Supplements
Curcumin fights Alzheimer's disease
In APPswe/PS1dE9 mice, curcumin supplementation improved spatial learning and memory while reducing amyloid-beta aggregation, lowering presenilin-2 and raising amyloid-degrading enzymes, a Beijing University of Chinese Medicine team reports.
