A non-randomized study in Annals of Family Medicine found people who drank hot tea or coffee had nearly 50 percent lower odds of carrying MRSA in the nose, though why is unknown. A separate report tied lower vitamin D in inpatients to higher costs and service use.

Vitamin D helps diabetes -trial study shows
The Vitamin D Council reports on a Tufts randomized trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily for 12 weeks improved pancreatic beta cell function in 22 mildly overweight prediabetic adults versus 22 on placebo. Blood levels rose only 24 to 30 ng/ml.

Sign Our Petition Against FDA! - newsletter from Vitamin D Council
The Vitamin D Council is asking readers to sign a petition backing its planned complaint against the FDA, arguing that delivering dietary vitamin D chiefly through fortified milk fails African Americans, who drink less milk and need far more sun exposure to make the same vitamin D.

Calcium/vitamin d supplements may boost risk of urinary tract stones
In the Women's Health Initiative, 36,282 postmenopausal women took 500 mg of calcium carbonate plus 200 IU of vitamin D3 twice daily or a placebo for seven years. The supplement group was 17% more likely to report urinary tract stones, 449 cases against 381.

Vitamin D cuts breast cancer risk
Laura Anderson of Cancer Care Ontario and colleagues report that women who spent 21 or more hours a week outdoors as adolescents were 29 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than those spending six hours, with reductions of 26 to 50 percent for time outdoors at later ages.

Attention: Vitamin D may help prevent heart disease, stroke
Men who took in 600 IU or more of vitamin D a day were 28 percent less likely to have heart disease or stroke than those getting 100 IU or less, Qi Sun of Harvard and colleagues report. Women showed a 16 percent reduction that researchers said was not statistically significant.

Free Autism Clinic - email from Vitamin D Council
An email from the Vitamin D Council announcing a free clinic for children with autism, with free assessments, blood tests and vitamin D, funded by memberships and donations. It appeals for money to cover staff, a website contract and a planned UCSF study on autism and vitamin D.

Vitamin D may help cut risk of death from prostate cancer
Among 1,822 men with prostate cancer, those whose pre-diagnosis 25(OH)D was in the lowest quartile were 59 percent more likely to die of the disease and 22 percent more likely to die of any cause than men with the highest levels. The active form 1,25(OH)2D showed no link.

Infantile pneumonia
The Vitamin D Council's John Cannell flags a Pediatrics study in which infants born to women with the lowest cord-blood vitamin D levels were six times more likely to develop RSV bronchiolitis in their first year. He argues the 600 IU/day advice for pregnancy is inadequate.

RSV and vitamin D link in infants
Dutch researchers measured vitamin D in cord blood from 156 newborns and found 54 percent had insufficient levels. Infants with the lowest concentrations had six times the risk of developing an RSV lower respiratory tract infection in their first year as those with the highest.

Vitamin D fights prostate cancer - new study
Among 841 men with prostate cancer, those whose tumors expressed vitamin D receptors most highly had lower PSA, Gleason score and stage, and were 83 percent less likely to have lethal disease. Blood vitamin D before diagnosis showed no such link.

Anemia and vitamin D link in children
Across blood samples from more than 9,400 children aged 2 to 18, lower vitamin D went with lower hemoglobin: those below 20 ng/ml had a 50% higher risk of anemia, and each 1 ng/ml increase went with 3% lower risk. Researchers call the black-white difference a clue that needs further study.

Professor Bruce Hollis
The Vitamin D Council announces Bruce Hollis's resignation from its board and credits his finding that a nursing mother needs blood vitamin D around 40-50 ng/ml before her breast milk carries enough for her infant; below 40 the milk's content becomes unpredictable.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with different types of obesity in black and white children (PR)
Researchers measured vitamin D in 237 healthy children aged 8 to 18 and found most were deficient. Black and white children with deficiency both carried more fat, but black children tended to store it just under the skin and white children between the internal organs.

Obese adolescents lacking vitamin D (PR)
A Hasbro Children's Hospital study in the Journal of Adolescent Health found most obese adolescents lack vitamin D. The researchers call for closer surveillance of vitamin D in this group and further work on whether normalizing levels lowers obesity-related health risks.

Calcium and vitamin D: Is it heart smart ?
A BMJ reanalysis of the Women's Health Initiative calcium and vitamin D trial, pooled with eight other studies, reports that calcium supplements with or without vitamin D can raise the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack. The original trial of 36,282 women found no such rise.
