A Vitamin D Council newsletter, available in full only to members for four months, that raises ethical questions about how the Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board conducts its business and opens with a quiz on a CDC analysis of Americans' vitamin D status.

Vitamin D levels associated with age-related macular degeneration (PR)
A University at Buffalo study of 1,313 women, published in Archives of Ophthalmology, found that among women under 75 a blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D level above 38 nanomoles per liter was associated with at least 44 percent lower odds of early age-related macular degeneration.

Is Vitamin D Deficiency Connected to Parkinson's Disease?
In a study of more than 150 Parkinson's patients, almost 70 percent had insufficient vitamin D at the outset and about 26 percent were deficient. Levels rose rather than fell over the study, which researchers say fits the possibility that insufficiency precedes the disease.

Vitamin D3 prevents relapse of Crohn's disease
In a 12-month randomized trial of 92 patients in remission, 13% of those taking 1,200 IU of vitamin D3 daily relapsed, against 29% on placebo, Johns Hopkins' Gerard Mullin reports. Serum 25(OH)D rose from 69 to 96 nmol/L in the treated group.

Prenatal vitamin D prevents infections in infants and young children - study
Cord blood from 922 newborns showed that lower vitamin D levels tracked with more respiratory infection by three months and more wheezing up to age five. Babies under 25 nmol/L were nearly twice as likely to have an early respiratory infection. Vitamin D was not linked to asthma by age five.

Vitamin D Council Newsletter - Studies of Interest 1
The Vitamin D Council is launching a subscriber-only newsletter of commentary and analysis on recently published vitamin D studies, at $5 a month, posted publicly four months later. Members also get videos of Dr. Cannell answering questions.

Biomarker found to predict prognosis of Alzheimer's disease
UCLA researchers report that the immune gene MGAT3 may serve as a biomarker for Alzheimer's risk. Comparing immune cells from 20 patients and 20 healthy people, they found MGAT3 levels tracked how well the cells cleared amyloid beta, and curcumin raised clearance in the lab.

Study: Vitamin D fights colorectal cancer
A meta-analysis in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found each additional 100 IU of dietary vitamin D a day was associated with 5% lower colorectal cancer risk across ten studies, with serum vitamin D showing a similar inverse association in six more.

Study explain why vitamin D protects against prostate cancer
Stanford researchers report that calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, inhibits prostate cancer cell growth by acting on prostaglandin metabolism, suppressing the COX-2 gene and the EP2 and FP receptors. They propose pairing it with NSAIDs as a possible therapeutic strategy.
Vitamins
Higher vitamin D intake needed to reduce cancer risk (PR)
UC San Diego and Creighton researchers report in Anticancer Research that adults need 4,000 to 8,000 IU of vitamin D a day, far above the 400 IU that defeated rickets, to reach blood levels associated with about halving the risk of breast and colon cancer, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes.

Vitamin D Deficiency Rickets: Yet Another Family Shattered
A Vitamin D Council newsletter carrying a letter from a young mother whose family was affected by vitamin D deficiency rickets, criticism of the BMJ for declining to revisit a decades-old review, and announcements about a new website and a GrassrootsHealth vitamin D study.

Health Claim Filed for Vitamin D
The Alliance for Natural Health USA has petitioned the FDA for a qualified health claim for vitamin D. Mercola adds that in a 12-week study of 33 adults taking 50,000 IU weekly, D3 raised blood levels 87% more than D2 and the body stored it two to three times better.

Vitamin D Council Newsletter - Purity Products
John Cannell writes that he has retired after 15 years at Atascadero State Hospital to work on vitamin D full time. Donations to the Vitamin D Council never grew enough to fund that; what made it possible, he says, was Jahn Levin and Purity Products, which markets the formula he designed.

Eggs shell out more vitamin D, less cholesterol
USDA testing of large eggs from 12 locations found 185 mg of cholesterol per egg, down from 215 mg a decade ago, and vitamin D at 41 IU, up from 25 IU. Researchers suggest improvements in hens' diets may explain the drop.

Vitamin D important for your lung function
An Australian study in mice linked vitamin D deficiency to reduced lung volume and function. A Chinese study of 435 asthma patients found nearly 90 percent had low vitamin D, and levels tracked positively with forced expiratory volume in one second.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency may hamper lung function
In mice, Australian researchers found vitamin D deficiency reduced lung volume and lung function compared with controls. Lead author Graeme Zosky called it the first direct mechanistic evidence that deficiency alters lung development, which may help explain links to obstructive lung disease.
Nutrition
Autism is a vitamin d deficiency disorder?
Egyptian researchers compared 70 children diagnosed with autism to 42 healthy children and found significantly lower serum levels of both measured forms of vitamin D, plus lower calcium, in the autistic group. They saw no link between autism risk and birth month or season.
Lifestyle
Obesity boosts, vitamin D cuts swine flu death risk
Among 534 Californian adults hospitalised with 2009 H1N1, 51% had a BMI above 30, rising to 61% of those who died. Obesity was tied to a 200% higher risk of death and extreme obesity to 300%, leading the authors to urge prompt treatment for obese patients.
