A French study comparing 170 multiple sclerosis patients with 170 age-matched controls found lower serum 25-OH vitamin D in the patients, 14.5 against 16.7 mcg/mL, with levels inversely correlated to disability. The authors suggest screening MS patients for deficiency.

Action Alert: Vitamin D Report Panelist Has Ties to Big Pharm
An action alert urging readers to press Congress to investigate the Institute of Medicine's vitamin D report. The IOM raised the recommendation for ages 1 to 70 from 200 to 600 IU, which the alert says still falls far short of what Harvard researchers and others advise.

Denufosol helps cystic fibrosis patients, so does vitamin D
In a phase III trial of 352 children with cystic fibrosis, 24 weeks of denufosol raised mean FEV1 by 0.048 L, about 2 percent above baseline, versus 0.003 L in controls. Researchers called the improvement small. Sinusitis, runny nose and headache were more common with the drug.

Why the New Vitamin D Recommendations Spell Disaster For Your Health
The Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board set the vitamin D RDA at 600 IU for children, adults up to 70 and pregnant women, citing bone health as the only benefit it could document. Dr. John Cannell and Carole Baggerly argue in interviews that people need far more.
Vitamins
Are the new vitamin D recommendations good enough?
The Institute of Medicine panel now advises 600 IU of vitamin D daily up to age 70 and 800 IU after 71, saying most Americans and Canadians already get enough. Critics dispute the deficiency figures and note few of the dozen-plus panelists research vitamin D.

Sunshine, vitamin D supplements needed to prevent breast cancer
Among 67,721 French women followed a decade, dietary and supplemental vitamin D alone showed no link to breast cancer, but in the sunniest regions the highest intakes came with 32 percent lower risk. The authors suggest a threshold of exposure from both sun and diet is needed.
Politics
Today, the FNB has failed millions...
The Vitamin D Council attacks the Institute of Medicine's new intakes, 400 IU a day for infants and 600 IU for pregnant women, arguing the pregnancy figure falls far short of the 5,000 IU Bruce Hollis's work supports and that the toxicity warning lacks reproducible evidence.

Vitamin D Announcement: Help prevent 1000 children from remaining vitamin D deficient
The Vitamin D Council asks readers to vote for GrassrootsHealth in the Pepsi Refresh Project, where a $250,000 grant would fund 3,000 free vitamin D tests for 1,000 uninsured San Diego children and their families. Four voting days remained.

Vitamin D deficiency and diseases
Nimitphone and Michael Holick recommend at least 400 IU of vitamin D daily for children and 2,000 IU for adults, defining deficiency as 25-hydroxyvitamin D below 20 ng/ml. They link low levels to cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, autoimmune and neurological conditions.

Vitamin supplements benefit HIV carriers
Harvard researchers measured vitamin A in six-week-old infants born to HIV-positive women and found those in the highest quartile were 49 percent less likely to die by 24 months. A separate study ties efavirenz and zidovudine use to vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency does not increase stroke risk among blacks
Among 7,981 adults, whites deficient in vitamin D were twice as likely to die of stroke as those with higher levels, but no such link appeared among blacks, who were 60 percent more likely to die of stroke overall. Deficiency was far more common in blacks, 32 percent against 7.

Vitamin D helps prevent Alzheimer's disease
Rats with Alzheimer's disease fed a vitamin D-free diet did worse in the Morris water maze than those on a vitamin D-supplemented diet, Iranian researchers report. Supplementing 1,25(OH)2D3 did not significantly change maze performance; the authors say patients should be protected from inadequacy.

A Simple, Inexpensive Trick to Cure a Cold
Mercola notes Americans catch more than a billion colds a year, that colds come from viruses so antibiotics are useless against them, and that hand-to-hand contact spreads them more than coughing. He argues an impaired immune system is what turns exposure into illness.

Merck's Vytorin cuts heart risk moderately
In an Oxford-led trial of about 9,000 people with chronic kidney disease, 15% taking Vytorin had a heart attack or stroke versus 18% on placebo. Because the trial never tested simvastatin alone, Cleveland Clinic's Steven Nissen says it reveals nothing about whether adding Zetia helps.

1 in 5 US adults suffer mental illness - report
SAMHSA reported that in 2009 about 45 million U.S. adults, 20 percent, had some mental illness in the past year and 11 million had a serious mental illness. Women were affected more often than men, and an estimated 8.4 million adults had serious thoughts of suicide.

Vitamin D good for asthma patients
The Lancet reported an 18-year-old whose asthma attack followed viewing his ex-girlfriend's Facebook profile, though experts say any stress could trigger one. A separate study found people low in vitamin D 50 percent more likely to need hospital care for an attack.

Should Facebook users take vitamin D to prevent asthma attacks?
The Lancet reported the case of an 18-year-old with otherwise well-controlled asthma who had an attack after viewing his ex-girlfriend's Facebook pages, and recovered after quitting the site. The article adds that studies link low vitamin D to poorer asthma control.

Vitamin D deficiency means higher death risk in diabetes patients
France's health insurance body attributes as many as 500 deaths over 30 years to the withdrawn diabetes drug Mediator, and regulators want former patients checked for valve damage. A Danish study of 289 type 2 patients tied severe vitamin D deficiency to far higher death risk.
