In a three-year trial, 244 healthy postmenopausal women took 180 ug of menaquinone-7 daily or placebo. Supplementation improved arterial stiffness, particularly among the women whose arteries were stiffest to begin with.

Vitamins
High dietary vitamin E or alpha-tocopherol prevents aggressive prostate cancer
Among 2,102 men with prostate cancer, European Americans in the highest quartile of dietary alpha-tocopherol intake were 66% less likely to have aggressive disease and African Americans 42% less likely. Adipose tissue tocopherol showed no significant association.
Vitamins
Sun exposure, vitamin D cuts risk of pancreatic cancer
Comparing cloud-adjusted UVB levels with pancreatic cancer rates, researchers found people in countries with low UVB exposure were six times more likely to develop the cancer than those in high-UVB countries, which they say is consistent with vitamin D playing a role.
Supplements
Antioxidants help obesity, diabetes mellitus
A McMaster University review concludes that antioxidant supplements such as zinc, lipoic acid, carnitine, cinnamon, green tea and vitamins C and E may offer only marginal protection against obesity and diabetes, and less than omega-3s, CoQ10, resveratrol or lycopene.
Supplements
Cinnamon and statins together cause hepatitis - case report
A 73-year-old woman on long-term statins developed acute hepatitis after about a week of cinnamon supplements. She recovered once she stopped both and had no symptoms when she resumed the statin alone, so her doctors blamed the combination. Cinnamon contains coumarin, which can be liver-toxic.
Food
Plant-based foods, lean meat good for bone health
A review found plant-based foods, lean meat and oily fish consistently associated with favorable bone markers such as bone mineral density, and some studies linked them to fewer fractures. Separate work found neither a prudent nor a western diet altered hip fracture risk after age 50.
Diet
Prudent diet lowers risk of AMD
Across 76,693 women and 39,519 men, Harvard researchers linked a prudent diet to 23 percent lower risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration and a Western pattern to 36 percent higher risk. DASH and Mediterranean patterns matched 17 and 16 percent reductions. Intermediate AMD showed no link.
Food
Eating nuts cuts death risk
Pooling three cohorts in the US and Shanghai, researchers found the highest nut eaters were 21% (US) and 17% (China) less likely to die during follow-up, with a 38% lower risk of ischemic heart disease. Stroke links appeared only among the Chinese participants.
Supplements
Resveratrol helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
Reviewing data on 196 type 2 diabetes patients, James Smoliga's team found resveratrol beat placebo on systolic blood pressure, hemoglobin A1c and creatinine but left fasting glucose, insulin resistance, triglycerides, LDL and HDL unchanged.
Food
Coffee may help prevent erectile dysfunction
Among 3,742 men in NHANES, those taking in 85 to 303 mg of caffeine a day were about 40 percent less likely to report erectile dysfunction than men consuming 0 to 7 mg. The inverse pattern also held among overweight and hypertensive men, but not among men with diabetes.
Diet
In study, skipping meals is linked to abdominal weight gain
Mice that ate all their food in one meal and fasted the rest of the day developed liver insulin resistance and carried more belly fat than mice free to nibble, Ohio State researchers report. Martha Belury says skipping meals may set the body up for fat gain.
Food
AGES boost pancreatic cancer risk
Among 528,251 people followed 10.5 years, men in the top fifth for intake of the advanced glycation end product CML-AGE were 43% more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer than those in the lowest; in women the figure was 14%. Highest red meat intake carried a 35% higher risk in men.
Food
Inflammatory diet boosts death risk from breast cancer - study
Among 117,510 postmenopausal women followed 12.3 years, those in the highest tertile of pro-inflammatory food intake were 48% more likely not to survive breast cancer, or 30% after adjustment. The diet was tied to HER2-positive disease but not overall breast cancer risk.
Food
Want to lower premature death risk? Cut intake of unhealthy foods
Among 3,226 British men aged 60 to 79 followed for 11 years, those eating the most of a pattern built on red meat, meat products, white bread, fried potato and eggs were 40 percent more likely to die of any cause. The highest intake of the healthy pattern matched a 17 percent lower risk.
Vitamins
Vitamin C may protect against Alzheimer's disease
Among older people with no or very mild cognitive impairment, plasma vitamin C and E ran lower in those with thicker carotid intima-media, but only vitamin C showed a dose-response. The authors say adequate vitamin C status might matter for protection against Alzheimer’s.
Food
Eating organic foods lowers pesticide exposure
Drawing on the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, researchers found urinary dialkylphosphate levels significantly lower in people who reported eating organic produce more often, suggesting organic food can lower organophosphate pesticide exposure.
Herbs
Do Detox Therapies Work? Yes, According to Some Studies
A gastroenterologist and a pharmacologist quoted here say the body detoxifies itself and that detox therapies lack clinical proof. The author counters that the literature backs some ingredients, among them Indian gooseberry (amla), studied for protecting the liver against toxins.
Food
Early exposure to high fructose causes cardiac damage - study
Male Wistar rats fed a 10% fructose diet for eight weeks developed insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and dyslipidemia, along with changes in cardiac vagal tone, heart rate and diastolic function. The authors compare the rats’ age to early childhood in humans.
