In three bladder cancer cell lines, amygdalin at 1.25 to 10 mg/ml dose-dependently reduced growth and proliferation, delaying cell cycle progression and lowering cdk2 and cyclin A. The authors say animal work must follow before amygdalin's value as an anti-tumor drug can be judged.

Supplements
Calcium/vitamin D supplements prevent hip fracture/osteoporosis
Reviewing Women's Health Initiative data, Ohio State researchers found estrogen with or without progestin reduced bone loss and hip, vertebral and total fractures, while calcium plus vitamin D gave a small but significant gain in hip bone density. Whether that gain prevents fractures is unknown.
Phytochemicals
Resveratrol supplements may prevent osteoporosis
In an Aarhus University Hospital trial, 74 obese middle-aged men with metabolic syndrome took 1,000 mg or 150 mg of resveratrol or placebo for 16 weeks. Spine bone mineral density and bone alkaline phosphatase rose with the dose, but hip bone density did not change.
Supplements
Amino acids help diabetic foot wounds
A University of Nevada review with pilot data finds supplementing arginine, glutamine and HMB may help diabetic foot wounds heal by raising production of hydroxyproline, needed to make collagen. One human trial showed improved wound depth and wound-appearance scores.
Supplements
Branched-chain amino acids may prevent diabetes mellitus, obesity
A Japanese cohort of 13,525 residents linked high branched-chain amino acid intake, as a share of total protein, to 43 percent lower diabetes risk. A separate study of 4,429 adults tied the highest BCAA intake to 30 percent lower overweight risk. Neither proved cause.
Supplements
Grape seed extract lowers blood sugar in diabetes mellitus
Chinese researchers gave diabetic rats grape seed extract procyanidins for six weeks and found significantly lower blood sugar, serum lipids and liver oxidative stress than in untreated diabetic rats, with oligomers working better than the polymeric forms.
Supplements
Taurine supplements help diabetes mellitus
Rabbits with antibiotic-induced diabetes that drank taurine at 200 or 400 mg per kg for 15 weeks had milder hyperglycemia and retinas protected from electrophysiological change. Taurine sits in the retina at high concentration and acts there as an antioxidant.
Supplements
N-3 PUFA Dietary supplements fight high blood pressure in non-diabetic patients
In a three-month trial, 100 hypertensive patients without diabetes or high cholesterol at a hospital in Ajman, UAE took omega-3 supplements or placebo. The supplements lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with a stronger effect in men.

Latest Update of USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Released
USDA released the 2014 update of its National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 27, with data on more than 8,600 foods. A reorganized dashboard lets users browse by food group and sort foods by the amount of a chosen nutrient, such as fiber or calcium.
Food
Drinking decaf coffee may be good for the liver
Using NHANES data on 27,793 adults, National Cancer Institute researchers found higher coffee intake, caffeinated or not, tracked with lower levels of abnormal liver enzymes, suggesting compounds other than caffeine may account for coffee's apparent benefit to the liver.

Teens should cut sugar intake for better memory - study suggests
Adolescent rats that freely drank sugar or high-fructose corn syrup solutions at concentrations like those in popular soft drinks developed memory problems, brain inflammation and pre-diabetes, while adult rats on the same drinks did not. Sugar supplied 35 to 40 percent of their calories.
Food
Probiotic yogurt could help protect against heavy metal poisoning
Lawson Health Research Institute scientists report the first clinical evidence that probiotic yogurt containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 reduced uptake of mercury and arsenic by up to 78 percent in pregnant women in Tanzania.
Minerals
Prenatal iron deficiency a risk for autism?
In a population-based case-control study, mothers of children with autism were 37 percent less likely to report taking iron supplements and reported lower daily iron intake. The highest quintile of intake was correlated with 51 percent lower autism risk, particularly during breastfeeding.
Supplements
Caffeine supplements boost peak anaerobic power output
Glaister and colleagues at St Mary's University in Twickenham found that caffeine supplementation at 5 mg per kilogram of body weight increased peak anaerobic power output.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may help insulin resistance
A Chinese study suggests serum vitamin D predicts insulin resistance in healthy people and that vitamin D supplementation may help normalize that metabolic disturbance.
Minerals
Zinc supplements not good for those using steroid therapy
In rats given prednisolone for eight weeks, adding zinc supplements further lowered calcium in bone and serum and reduced bone dry weight, mineral content and density. The authors conclude moderate zinc during steroid therapy can worsen calcium deficiency and speed bone loss.
Supplements
Glutamine supplements help weight loss
In a four-week pilot trial, obese and overweight women given glutamine significantly reduced body weight and waist circumference and cut insulinemia and HOMA-IR by 20%, without changing diet or lifestyle. The authors say the pilot suggests glutamine is safe and favors weight loss.
