A one-year follow-up of 31 ear, nose and throat cancer patients treated with radiotherapy found those with higher omega-3 intake had a lower risk of premature death and longer survival. Omega-3s showed no significant effect on inflammatory or oxidative biomarkers.

Probiotics supplements prevent necrotizing enterocolitis
A King Saud University meta-analysis of 24 trials in preterm infants found probiotic supplementation cut severe necrotizing enterocolitis by 57 percent and mortality by 35 percent, but did not significantly reduce nosocomial sepsis. Effects in infants under 1,000 g remain unknown.
Herbs
Korean mistletoe helps menopausal symptoms
Researchers at Hoseo University reported that Korean mistletoe water extract reduced hot flushes, dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis and muscle loss in ovariectomized rats, which the authors take as evidence it may relieve some menopausal symptoms.
Diet
High fat diet can harm the liver
In a Spanish study, mice on a high-fat diet developed the liver changes of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and treatment with melatonin, MnTBAP or uric acid prevented every change seen in untreated high-fat-fed mice. The authors suggest the same might prevent NAFLD in people.
Supplements
Selenium reduces Aflatoxin B1 induced hepatotoxicity
Sichuan Agricultural University researchers fed broilers aflatoxin B1, which shrank the bursa of Fabricius, cut serum immunoglobulin and raised apoptotic bursal cells. Adding sodium selenite reversed those changes and reduced lesions, which they say protects humoral immune function.
Supplements
Chlorella supplements help breast cancer
Forty-five women with breast cancer were assigned for one month to a vitamin tablet, chlorella granules or a chlorella extract drink. Breast cancer subscale scores rose in the granule group, and half the extract group reported less fatigue and less dry skin. Larger studies are needed.

Artificial sweeteners boost diabetes mellitus risk?
A study in Science led by Eran Elinav found non-caloric artificial sweeteners shifted gut bacteria in mice and human volunteers, and that transferring those bacteria into germ-free mice produced glucose intolerance. Antibiotics reversed the effect in mice.
Diet
MedDiet, DASH slow cognitive decline
Rush University researchers studying 826 older Chicago residents in the Memory and Aging Project found that following DASH and Mediterranean-style eating patterns may help slow age-related cognitive decline.
Supplements
L-Leucine supplements help Pompe disease
In mice with Pompe disease, insulin combined with L-leucine normalised mTORC1 activation, and chronic leucine supplementation partly protected against kyphosis and muscle loss while increasing spontaneous activity and running capacity. Albert Einstein College of Medicine researchers led the work.
Food
Pomegranate extract fights diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer's disease
University of Rhode Island researchers tested pomegranate extract and its phenolics, including punicalagin and ellagic acid, and found all samples inhibited glycation, several more potently than the control aminoguanidine. They suggest a role against AGE-related diseases.
Food
Onion protects against type 2 diabetes mellitus - updated
A review in Nutrition argues onion could be a cheap tool against type 2 diabetes, crediting sulfur compounds such as S-methylcysteine and flavonoids like quercetin with lowering glucose, lipids and oxidative stress. Preliminary trials found sliced onion lowered blood sugar in patients.
Biotics
Probiotics fight functional constipation
A Nestec-sponsored meta-analysis of 14 trials found probiotics cut whole gut transit time by 12 hours and added 1.3 bowel movements a week. Bifidobacterium lactis helped; Lactobacillus casei Shirota did not. The authors flag high bias and heterogeneity.
Minerals
Calcium supplements may cut death risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a Wake Forest analysis of 720 people with type 2 diabetes, calcium intake showed no association with subclinical cardiovascular disease or with mortality overall, but women who used calcium supplements had a 38 percent lower risk of death from any cause.

High serum iron linked to high cancer risk
Taiwanese researchers followed 309,443 cancer-free adults and found serum iron at or above 120 ug/dL linked to 25% more cancers and 39% higher cancer mortality. The relationship was J-shaped, and liver cancer risk rose sharply in people with hepatitis B.
Supplements
NucleVitalQ10 Complex maintains antioxidant system
Scientists at the University of Lodz gave 66 healthy women aged 35 to 55 the supplement NucleVital Q10 Complex for 12 weeks. Plasma antioxidant capacity, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity and telomerase concentration rose, while lymphocyte telomere length did not change.
Supplements
Mushroom supplement fights melanoma
In mice injected with melanoma cells, a mushroom mycelia supplement called CARI III at 300 mg/kg a day reduced tumour weight about as much as the drug doxorubicin, and the treated mice lived 51% longer than controls.
Supplements
Selenium supplement helps Hashimoto's thyroiditis
A report notes that correcting selenium deficiency with supplements is linked to reduced production of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and its authors say selenium may be an effective treatment option. No effective treatment currently exists for the disease.
Food
Food Allergies Linked to Farm Antibiotics
Mercola ties rising food allergies to a damaged gut microbiome, citing research that a common gut bacterium helps prevent sensitization to food allergens and arguing that glyphosate and farm antibiotics destroy gut bacteria. Healthy livestock account for about 80 percent of US antibiotic use.
