Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland fed Alzheimer's-model transgenic mice from 5 to 13 months old to test whether added nutrients boost the effect of DHA. They report that starting dietary treatment early may slow the disease's progression in mice.

Vitamins
Multivitamins help cognition in young men
In a 16-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 138 adults aged 20 to 49, men taking a multivitamin improved on the incongruent Stroop task, a measure of selective attention and response inhibition. Women showed no such benefit, though B vitamin levels rose in both.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids prevent liver disease
A PLOS One animal study reports DHA protected against fatty liver, inflammation and fibrosis, and affected vitamin, carbohydrate, protein and amino acid metabolism as well as lipids. The dose used was equivalent to 2 to 4 grams of omega-3 a day for a person.
Vitamins
Higher vitamin D levels associated with better cognition and mood in PD patients
In a cross-sectional analysis of 286 Parkinson's patients, higher plasma vitamin D levels went with lower symptom severity, better cognition and less depression, and the relationships were stronger among the 225 patients who were not demented.
Vitamins
Vitamin D supplements reduce pain in fibromyalgia sufferers (PR)
Researchers writing in PAIN report that vitamin D supplements reduced pain in fibromyalgia patients with low calcifediol levels, and suggest the vitamin may be a cost-effective alternative or add-on to other treatment. The syndrome has no cure and no treatment covers all its symptoms.
Supplements
Melatonin may lower prostate cancer risk
Harvard's Sarah Markt told an AACR prostate cancer conference that men with higher melatonin levels had a 75 percent lower risk of developing advanced prostate cancer than men with lower levels. She says the results need replication but support keeping a steady sleep-wake cycle.
Biotics
How a versatile gut bacterium helps us get our daily dietary fiber (PR)
University of British Columbia researchers report in Nature the gene sequence that lets the gut bacterium Bacteroides ovatus break down xyloglucan, a dietary fiber in vegetables from lettuce to tomatoes. About 92 percent of people carry bacteria with a variant of the sequence.
Vitamins
Vitamin D status associated with multiple sclerosis activity, progression (PR)
In 465 patients followed up to five years after a first episode suggestive of MS, a 50-nmol/L rise in average blood vitamin D over the first year was associated with 57 percent lower risk of new active brain lesions and 57 percent lower risk of relapse.
Diet
Mediterranean diet associated with lower risk of peripheral artery disease (PR)
In a trial of 7,477 older adults with diabetes or several cardiovascular risk factors, both Mediterranean diets, one with extra-virgin olive oil and one with nuts, were associated with lower risk of symptomatic peripheral artery disease than low-fat diet counseling over 4.8 years.
Vitamins
Large amounts of folic acid shown to promote growth of breast cancer in rats
Folic acid at 2.5 to five times the daily requirement significantly promoted growth of existing pre-cancerous and cancerous cells in the mammary glands of rats, Young-In Kim's lab at St. Michael's Hospital reports in PLOS ONE. Folate's role in breast cancer remains contested.
Diet
High-protein diets, like the popular Dr. Dukan diet, increase the risk of developing kidney disease in rats (PR)
University of Granada researchers fed 20 rats a 45 percent protein or a normal diet for 12 weeks. The high-protein group lost up to 10 percent of body weight with no lipid improvement, had 88 percent less urinary citrate, more acidic urine and 22 percent heavier kidneys.
Supplements
Can fish oil help preserve brain cells? (PR)
Among 1,111 older women, those with higher red blood cell omega-3 levels had larger brain volumes eight years later; women with twice the level had 0.7 percent more total brain volume and 2.7 percent more in the hippocampus, the Neurology study reports.
Vitamins
Vitamin B12 supplement protects against hepatic fibrosis
In rats given N'-nitrosodimethylamine, vitamin B12 supplementation restored liver function markers, glycogen and hepatic B12 reserves and helped normal liver architecture return, a Pharmaceutical Biology study reports. The authors conclude B12 protects against the toxin's fibrosis.
Supplements
Inosine helps raise urate in Parkinson disease
A phase 2 trial in JAMA Neurology found inosine supplementation safe, tolerable and effective at raising serum urate in 75 people with early Parkinson disease. The trial did not track disease progression, though earlier work suggested higher urate may slow disability.
Diet
Mediterranean diet lowers death risk in cardiovascular disease patients
Following 6,137 men and 11,278 women who already had cardiovascular disease, researchers found those adhering most closely to a Mediterranean diet were about 19% less likely to die of any cause and 15% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Vitamins
Vitamin C fights influenza
Mice unable to make vitamin C and exposed to H3N2 influenza carried more virus and less antiviral interferon, plus more inflammatory cytokines, than sufficient mice, an Immune Network study found. The authors conclude vitamin C aids early antiviral responses.
Supplements
Raspberry ketone based supplement helps weight loss
Of 45 obese adults who completed a diet-and-exercise trial, those also taking METABO - a supplement combining raspberry ketone, caffeine, capsaicin, garlic, ginger and Citrus aurantium - lost more fat mass and waist girth and reported more energy. No adverse events were observed.
Supplements
Psidium guajava helps fight diabetes mellitus
Rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes given 300 mg/kg of Psidium guajava (guava) leaf extract for 30 days showed lower serum glucose and HbA1c and higher insulin. The authors credit flavonoids and other phenolic components in the extract.
