Among 128 adults aged 65 to 80, vitamin C from food, but not from supplements, was positively associated with Digit Span scores, while vitamin E, beta-carotene and selenium were not linked to cognitive scores. The researchers say further research is needed.

Vitamin C boosts grip strength - new study
Among 2,184 men and women in the Framingham Offspring Cohort, averaging 58 years old, higher dietary vitamin C went with significantly greater grip strength in both sexes. The researchers cannot say how vitamin C produces the effect.

Supplemental folic acid taken in early pregnancy linked to gestational diabetes mellitus
An editor's note on a Diabetes Care report that folic acid supplements taken in early pregnancy raise the risk of gestational diabetes. It adds that synthetic folic acid has also been tied to breast cancer risk, while folate occurring naturally in vegetables shows no such link.
Supplements
Hops may help prevent breast cancer
In lab tests, an enriched hops extract and its compound 6-prenylnaringenin pushed estrogen metabolism in breast cells toward a detoxification pathway tied to lower cancer risk. The authors caution that a related hops compound, 8-prenylnaringenin, acts as a strong estrogen on breast cancer cells.
Food
High fructose corn syrup may raise cardiovascular risk
In a trial of 85 adults, drinks supplying 10%, 17.5% or 25% of energy as high fructose corn syrup raised postprandial triglycerides, fasting LDL cholesterol and 24-hour uric acid in a dose-dependent way. Aspartame-sweetened drinks raised none of the three.
Vitamins
Beta-carotene may protect against ER- breast cancer
Among 1,502 breast cancer cases and matched controls, women with high serum alpha-carotene were 39% and those with high beta-carotene 51% less likely to have estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer. High retinol ran the other way, with 137% higher risk of ER-negative, PR-negative tumours.

Vitamin D prevents breast cancer?
An Iranian case-control study of 135 breast cancer patients and 135 matched controls found women in the highest quartile of serum vitamin D were 70 percent less likely to have the disease, a link significant only among premenopausal women. Higher dietary intake tracked with lower risk too.
Supplements
DHA, EPA protect against NAFLD
Mice on an atherogenic high-fat diet developed less severe fatty liver disease when fed EPA or DHA. EPA cut liver triacylglycerol more effectively, while DHA better prevented inflammation and oxidative stress. The authors conclude both could treat NAFLD and NASH.
Food
Is Food Causing Early Puberty in Girls?
Scientists agree U.S. girls are reaching puberty earlier but disagree on the cause, weighing obesity, soft drinks, endocrine disrupters and livestock hormones. Frank Biro writes in Pediatrics that early maturation carries higher risks of depression and of breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer.
Food
Could drinking soy milk stop prostate cancer?
Korean researchers applied a soy milk digestion extract to human LNCaP prostate cancer cells and found it lowered cell viability and PSA, while estradiol raised viability. The test was done in cells, not in patients.
Food
Eating whole grain products helps you live longer
Harvard researchers pooled 12 studies and NHANES data covering 800,000 people and report in Circulation that men and women eating three or more servings of whole grains a day were 20% less likely to die prematurely, particularly from cardiovascular disease, than those eating fewer.
Diet
Mediterranean diet for breast cancer prevention and treatment in postmenopausal women
A 2015 review argues the Mediterranean diet, built on fish, olive oil, unrefined cereals, herbs, fruits and vegetables, supplies antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties relevant to breast cancer prevention, and notes epidemiology puts postmenopausal women most at risk.
Food
Drinking sugar-sweetened soda raises risk of dental caries
A survey of Japanese college students found the main factors in dental caries risk were knowledge of the country's shokuiku food-education program, tooth-brushing frequency and sugar-sweetened soda. Female students who drank sugary soft drinks were 89 percent more likely to have caries.
Food
Eating walnuts may help prevent colon cancer
Mice exposed to a carcinogen and fed walnuts at 9.4 or 15 percent of total fat had 30 percent fewer colon tumours, UConn Health researchers report. Larger walnut doses lost the anticancer effect, particularly in female mice, and walnuts shifted gut bacteria.
Vitamins
Could vitamin D prevent colorectal cancer?
In a case-control study, women in the highest fifth of total circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D were 46% less likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer than those in the lowest. The design cannot establish cause; binding-protein and free vitamin D showed no association.
Food
Does olive oil reduce the risk of breast cancer?
AICR's Karen Collins says evidence on olive oil and breast cancer remains limited. The Spanish PREDIMED study linked high extra virgin olive oil intake to lower risk, but the studies carry caveats, and AICR's continuous update project has not identified olive oil as protective.
Phytochemicals
Anthocyanin helps prevent prostate cancer
Testing the dietary anthocyanin cyanidin-3-O-glucoside in two prostate cancer cell lines, researchers at the University of Catania found it slowed proliferation, increased DNA fragmentation and raised levels of the tumor suppressor P75NGFR. They suggest it may help prevent the disease.
Minerals
Iron may affect gestational diabetes mellitus risk
A Boston University-led study found high preconceptional heme iron intake was associated with a 55% higher risk of gestational diabetes, while high non-heme iron intake was linked to 52% lower risk and supplemental iron to 22% lower risk. The authors say causation was not proved.
