Options run from watchful waiting to removing the prostate or radiation, with proton therapy costing around $100,000. The author says prostate cancer kills an estimated 35,000 US men a year and cites reporting that no serious study shows high-tech treatments keep men alive longer.

Sunlight exposure may lower prostate cancer risk
A review of 1,020 PSA-detected prostate cancer cases and 5,044 matched controls found evidence that greater sun exposure may lower prostate cancer risk, though the findings on skin type, burning and time spent outdoors pointed in mixed directions.

Green tea may prevent prostate cancer
In 26 prostate cancer patients who took four green tea extract capsules daily for a month before surgery, hepatocyte growth factor fell 18.9 percent, VEGF 9.9 percent and PSA 10.4 percent, an LSU-led study in Cancer Prevention Research found. The dose matched the EGCG in about 12 cups of tea.

Exposure to x-ray linked to increased risk of prostate cancer
Men who had a hip or pelvic X-ray or barium enema a decade earlier were 2.5 times more likely to have prostate cancer than the general population, in a study of 431 men diagnosed before 60. The researchers stress this is an association, with no proof the radiological tests caused the increase.

What can you eat to prevent prostate cancer
A roundup of earlier reports on diet and prostate cancer, among them a review of plant-based diets, trials of black tea and lycopene, and Japanese research finding men who drank five or more cups of green tea a day were 48% less likely to develop advanced disease.

Hormone therapy for prostate cancer does more harm than good
A JAMA review of nearly 20,000 men over 65 with early stage prostate cancer found hormone therapy raised deaths from other causes, such as heart disease, offsetting its survival benefit. The authors say monitoring is the better option; the therapy still helps advanced disease.
